It was even worse here. At the 11th hour the launch in a lot of European countries, including The Netherlands, was postponed. All the PR materials were ready and they where ready to go, until the word came that it was postponed by almost half a year. I bought one in Germany instead, but our Xbox site didn't receive any support from Microsoft, because it was officially not out yet. Companies like Ubisoft however, did. The woman who was the head of Xbox Netherlands was actually in tears...

Phil Spencer has went on record saying as much. Had the done even 30% better sales they would be in a wildly different position than they are now. Digital Marketplaces were new and lots of people were getting started there. Basically think about if you have a massive library of games access digitally why would you change platforms and have to pay for them all over again

@@TheXeroLink Funny enough, that's the generation I skipped out on Xbox. I was an Xbox fan from the original, but the Xbox One generation I switched to PC gaming. I switched back to Xbox to play Halo Infinite, but most of my games are on PC. Like you said, they missed their opportunity with Xbox One.

The xbox 360 was such a great innovative console made with a lot of passion by gamers for gamers. Sadly when it became successful the accountants took over the show. We ended up with the Kinect to try and rival the wii - but it just didn't work very well. You needed a large amount of space and a lot of light. There is nothing more frustrating that a kinect personal trainer mis-counting the push ups you are doing and calling you a total lazy failure when you actually smashed the target. The accountants also stopped funding exclusives and by the end of the 360 generation people were switching to the PS3. With few world class exclusives on the xbox 360 at the end of the generation the accountants could see that more time was spent using the xbox 360 for streaming movies. So the accountants decided that the public wanted a TV box not a gaming box - so that's how they came up with the xbox one design. Instead of taking the player statistics as a warning flag that they needed to re-focus on world class exclusive games, they used the stats to accelerate their downward spiral. Such a tragic series of events after the passion that went into creating the xbox 360. if they had given the Kinect & TV integration away for free maybe some of their multimedia dreams would have caught on. Some of their "one single box" ideas were pretty good but no-one wanted to pay 100 extra for it.

A few days ago i went shopping for a new mattress with my fiancee. We went to a store where they used a machine to measure our positions and needs for a new mattress. The way it worked was we got on top of a mattress that took the shape or our bodies, based on a 3D scanner on top of us. Much to my surprise, this scanner was literally a kinect 2.0, xbox logo and all. (We also ended up buying the mattress there :p )

You know it's crazy that it's been 22 years since Sega left the console market in the USA and that was in the 6th generation and in 22 years there's only been three more generations. It would of been cool to see Sega stick around and see what consoles they would of come out with. Just a random thought I had while watching this video.

Sega never had a chance of sticking around. They were struggling against Nintendo from the beginning, and Sony had an overwhelming advantage against them. They lost all trust with consumers, retail and developers with the failure of the Saturn.

I got my Xbox One right at the end of high school just after it launched for less than 50% of retail because some guy’s wife was mad at him for playing too many games so sold it for however much she thought was fair for a “Nintendo” (her words when I picked it up). I paid cash on the spot because I want a blu ray player and the console came second but over the generation it grew to be one of my favourites ever. Love the design, loved the old menu with the snapping and tv features, and loved the games. Sunset Overdrive was a great one for a time. It was even fun being able to play the stinkers like Halo 5. Not the best ever but one of my favorites and I feel it should at least be less hated if not more loved. Happy Birthday Xbox One 🥳 🎊 🎉 🍻

Glad I’m not the only one who absolutely loved the HDMI in, I thought it was brilliant at the time it came out as it freed up an HDMI port because I just plugged my cable box directly into my XB1. I loved being able to switch between watching TCM to playing Resident Evil, Battlefield, Overwatch, or whatever without having to even touch the remote. And yeah, the Series X is so much better than the XB1, it’s fantastic.

Rare Replay is notable for being one of only a tiny handful of Xbox One exclusives. The only other notable titles are just Halo 5 and Forza 5 (and, to put it nicely, both of those games aren't considered to be the best in their franchises). Microsoft realized they lost badly, so they started heavily leaning into everything that wasn't Xbox One related like PC and cloud gaming. With how hard Xbox Series S/X sales have fallen off this year relative to Switch and PS5, I'd be surprised if they make it to 11th gen with their own dedicated hardware. Phil Spencer said it himself while trying to get the Activision deal to go through (heavily paraphrasing because I don't remember the exact quote) "we completely lost the worst generation to lose. Everyone built up big digital libraries of games during the 8th gen, and the vast majority weren't doing it on Xbox".

I just upgraded from the OG Xbox One to Series X, yesterday. As bad as the launch was, I was able to play Xbox, 360 and One games on it, I have a digital library of around 300 games and I bought about 60 of them, the rest were free, and any time I sub to the online service that number shoots up way more. This kept me going without feeling like I was missing out even to this year, it's only that I want to play games like Robocop that I've had my arm twisted and I decide to upgrade, but I'm more than happy otherwise with the so called VCR Xbox One. The other great thing is that my entire library moved straight over to the Series X and many games got a next gen upgrade. When I upgraded from the PS3 I literally lost my whole library and that would have been the case whether I moved to Xbox or stuck with PlayStation. Had I gone with PlayStation, I could have then kept my PS4 library while with Xbox I can keep a library that spans 4 generations. I will be keeping the older Xbox for playing with guests in the living room, while I keep the SX in the bedroom where I mostly play games. I have never previously felt like it was worth keeping the previous console when I updated, but he fact that most of the library is crossed over, keeps the previous console relevant and useful. I do regret getting rid of the PS3 only specifically for certain games like MGS4 but it is recognisably an old generation system and good but outdated tech, while the Xbox One just feels like an iPhone 12 compared to iPhone 15; a great system with shared capabilities that's just not the most powerful version, it's slower and older but capable none-the-less.

It's getting old, and it does show it's age at times, but it still runs really good. I have a Series X which is awesome and probably the best console I've ever bought, but I still like the Xbox One too. Interesting too, mine was made the day it debuted (November 22) but it was an exact year later. (November 22, 2014) so it is exactly 9 years old while the system as a whole is 10 years. I still love it. I'll never forget the first game I played in it, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare

I should have said this in the PS4 video maybe, but I feel it is just as relevant in this video: It is AMAZING that the PS4 and Xbox One managed to last as long as they did with the hardware they released with. The base model PS4 from 2013 is still getting most of the major releases that come out, if you bought that system at launch, you got an insane deal, and much the same is truth with the base model Xbox One. I think it's shocking, since most people at the time, including myself, were thinking the console cycle was going to go back to being 5 years or so like it had been trough most of history, that the 8-10 year console cycle of the PS3 and Xbox 360 had been a fluke. Yet here we are 10 years later, and that anemic launch hardware that so many people bought is still getting new big releases, not just FIFAs or Just Dances, but flagship titles! It's frankly amazing, and a testament to how much hardware standardization and optimization DOES matter contrary to what a lot of PC gamers claimed at the time. On that note, I'm glad the consoles vs PC war is mostly over. I'm glad people aren't as dumb about their console wars mentality as they used to be, even if there's still the occasionally outlier still stuck in the age of 12. I really appreciate Phil's Spencer strategy of making it so that the PC market is a separate market altogether, so they can port games while still claiming they are "Xbox exclusive", it makes sense for them I guess, since Windows remains the dominant OS in the PC market. As for the Kinect, it has found a home in other applications that aren't gaming I've heard, it's decent for some VR applications, I remember that Alien Isolation used it so that they Alien could heard you if you spoke in the real world, or made any noise, not sure how well that worked, but it sounds quite awesome!

There had been so many games I havent played yet. I can pick up used games for a few quid and I have also subscribed to game pass which I believe is a great value. Personally, I believe the Xbox brand never truly recovered from that moment the Xbox One was revealed to the public ten years ago. All that good will Microsoft fostered during the 360, gone. I don't own any Xbox anymore because many of those games I owned for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One I can play on Steam and Nintendo Switch instead. I wouldn't be too shocked if Xbox stopped making consoles altogether within the next decade.

19:06 On Microsoft's end, this has already happened - it was announced in June this year that Microsoft first-party games, going forward, will only support Series S/X. Sony has been a bit more coy about it, but I doubt cross-generation titles will be a thing for much longer.

Hi Adam, Hope your well. Great video. For me I was PS1 PS2 Xbox Xbox 360 and Xbox One.. at the time of my favourite era the 360 it was just pure fun i never was a tech guy and been in school i can only compare it to what it would of been for you with the Dreamcast era. Anyways to my point i got the Xbox One on day one Remember the special editions Day one?! with zero knowledge about E3 any of the tech news etc but i can honestly say for me personally i had an absolute blast in the first few years of release. I did see how it seemed more mature if that's the word or away from gaming it seemed at release but i had absolutely loved it at the time. Phill did a great job with changing the fortunes of the one I have not bought a console since the OG One but looking at it now the future looks bleak with this Xbox 'all in one' package online crap they are clearly leaning towards. such a shame really. it feels like one step forward and 2 steps back. Also when you say about Microsoft throwing infinite money at Xbox looking back now Im glad the One failed. If they made specs like the X at release like you mentioned i think Sony would of gone under. I think the futures on ice with Sony now. Microsoft are just going to Sink them If they dont win console wise they will just buy out gaming companies and make it exclusive only.

Streaming a 360 game from my One X to my PC in a small side-window as I watch this, it feels odd when I think about how I'm probably the only one in the world who actually uses this. This console deserved to be handled better at the start.

To give more insight on the specs of the Xbox One, their descisions in that department were really more short-sighted than arrogant. It came down to two things. Using 8GB of DDR3 with ESRAM, and the Kinect. The former was so they can cut costs so they can include the Kinect at $500, and so they could beat out the amount of RAM Sony was planning to have in the PS4, which was 4GB of GDDR5. When developers complained to Sony about their RAM issue, they decided to drop the Camera they were going to include with the PS4 so they could include 8GB of GDDR5 at $400, which is not only way faster than what MS was including with their system, but MS's video memory setup made it more difficult for devs to work with. MS also reserved some of the power of the Xbox One to power the Kinect, taking away resources needed for games on the systems. That's why at launch you saw games on the PS4 run at 1080p, but only 720p on the Xbox One. They later unlocked that reserved Kinect power for devs to use in their games, which raised the resolution for most games to 900p, but they could never be on par with Sony because of descisions made years prior, at least until the Xbox One X.

I remember the Shuhei Yoshida and Adam Boyes video of them sharing a game. If I remember correctly Sony had comparable plans in terms of DRM and a day one patch to get rid of that after they saw the response to Microsoft's announcement the day before their own. I really liked Peter Moore (who I know you hate) for all the smart things he did for the brand. His Halo 2 and Grand Theft Auto tattoo E3s were legendary. He always spoke highly of SEGA and talked about his Dreamcast shrine at home. I remember him talking about it in 2005 or so on Mayor Nelson's podcast.

The quote from Mattrick that did the most damage, I'd think, is this: "Some of the advantages that you get, of having, a box that is designed to use an online state, so, that, uh, to me is the future-proof choice, and I think people, could've arguably gone the other way if we didn't do it and fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity, it's called Xbox 360." That has got to be the biggest "eff you" to customers I've ever seen.

The problem with my Xbox one X as a collector today is, it actually is of less use to me in my home setup than my 360. The series X plays almost everything I would want to play from the One, while the 360 has its own vast library of great games that aren’t backwards compatible, like guitar hero. Therefore, my One X has been relegated to a pretty decent travel console that can fit easily in a backpack, when I don’t want to risk the integrity of my Series X. Haven’t even turned it on in over a year, and was playing NFS Most Wanted on 360 yesterday.

I appreciate this immensely, Adam. You sorted some concepts of how stupid and callous MS and Xbox were in the 360 generation. It surprises me that they could have sunk PS and Nintendo for 8th gen if they had played their cards better or did a better job not screwing themselves prior to Xbox One launch. I bought my VcR in 2016 (tough financial time and Xbox suddenly dropped price) and I liked most everything I played. Rare Replay was awesome, Arkham Knight and Mad Max did great. Times change, hopefully Xbox is going to exist in 20 years. Thanks

Thank you for this nice video Mr. Koralik. Internet requiement for initializing a console is a big concern to a physical game collector, that's why i collected ps4 games after my Xbox 360 collection. I have waited for a slim PS5 but because of online disc drive activation i got an original PS5 yesterday. Now Nintendo has a big chance to take over all the modern game collector community with an offline next gen console. Microsoft should turn Xbox One and Series X into a legend like 360 by removing online activation. It is good for reputation.
