Give it 10 years, and people will consider both “retro” and “retcon” the whole experience of gaming on both those systems! 😆
I remember thinking it was crazy that the Switch turned 3. Now it’s only 3 years away from turning 10. Damn.
When I first bought mine, I didn't even remotely expect how hugegantic its library would become. It's been a fun generation.

Wow! The Nintendo switch is already 7 years old, this system came out 8 days before my birthday, yep, I'll be 40 years old in the next 8 days

Same. Just turned 37. The late 1990s and early 2000s were such great times for gaming when the Microtransactions, Lootboxes, Online Requirements and Political Agendas weren’t problems messing the hobby up as they are now. Lol

I think "mid-gen refresh" and "mid-gen upgrade" mean something different. Mid-gen upgrade is when you upgrade the specs (PC-E Supergrafx or PS4 Pro). Mid-gen refresh is a wider term that includes both upgraded and just updated models (Neo Geo CD, GBA SP, PS2 Slim, Switch OLED). The update can be a better form factor or screen, more storage or a more affordable price. New peripherals like the Sega CD, DualShock 1 and Kinect/PS Move can also sometimes function as mid-gen refreshes.
Adjusting date on my watch after short Feb, I got sudden flashback when I realized it was actually 3/3. 7 years back I was skipping to get BotW for the WiiU after so much wait and anticipation.
I love how there is always sirens outside whenever Adam talks about Nintendo speculation
Switch 2 seems overdue
The Switch launched just a couple weeks before I started my current career after college, when I was 21. I'm currently 28, and yet I still remember the Switch launch like it was yesterday. I still go back and watch my acquisition + unboxing vlog sometimes.
It wasnt just the Game Boy Micro. The GBA SP had its definitive edition with an RGB quality screen (AGS 101) released with little fanfare. I owned both GBA and DS and did not know of this until adulthood.
Time flies, I've been watching you for at least 10 years at this point (probably more).
The Switch has been a great supporter of indy and mid budget titles, and I think that helped much sustaining sales.
I always love it when you do these
A Switch Mini would be smart. The Switch Lite is still a fairly massive handheld compared to a traditional handheld. Something actually pocketable for a discounted price would be attractive for many just to squeeze some more sales of it before the next system.
Crazy that it’s been 7 years and I’ve only been an owner for almost 2 years leaving me with many games on the console to get caught up on whether old or new games and i still find good value of entertainment when using it to kill some time while watching KZread by the side and that’s the good feeling about this unique console that you can play in either handheld or tv and here’s to hoping the Switch 2 will be ever better and a success rather than repeating the Wii U days.
Meanwhile at Japan: Should we release the switch 2 on march 2025? We should wait until November the switch may become the highest selling console if the swich 2 doesn't eat the sales.
7 years and still no themes. I can almost forgive it though because it gave me Metroid Dread and Pikmin 4
unless they have an even 'simpler' model of the switch planned for later, you would imagine the switch lite should have been the very last model retailed at $100
I’ve had a lot of fun on this console and I can’t believe it’s older now. Today I just emulate it for a higher end experience from different PCs. I’m not their target customer anymore, but I appreciate the games.
is incredible to believe that the Nintendo Switch is 7 years old now and that is just 15 million units left to become the best selling console ever, wow, 2017 feels like yesterday now
The switch is extremely healthy here in Japan. Stores are FULL of accessories & games fly off the shelves. My coworkers are always talking about switch games vs PS5 stuff. The Wii U was a disaster but good on Nintendo for turning the ship around. In my honest opinion the switch has already surpassed the ps2 library wise & functionality wise. I love this lil machine 😂

7:44 It's great to see content creators that don't rely on rumours or "industry insiders". Great video
Been waiting for this one!!!
The switch 2 is coming out in 2025, it was absolutely supposed to come out this year. They have had the hardware ready for a few years now, they're just waiting for software to line-up.
I got it just last summer 2023 for the first time, the OLED TOTK model, I just can't believe Nintendo has sold this thing for 7 years straight at the same price point, correct me if I'm wrong but that's unheard of!
7 years that's crazy I really hope the next system is backwards compatible.
I think it will go on to beat the PS2. It would be an amazing tribute to Mr Iwata and the marketing writes itself for the successor.
I *know* these aren't retrospective video but its nice to have something to watch for Gen 8 whenever i do rewatch the retrospectives :)
Great Job!
I still don’t have a Switch! Working through my 1980s-1990s backlog haha Maybe if that $50 price cut comes you mentioned I will jump aboard🎉
Love these videos and this os crazy its this old now. Still remember first holding one and being blown away.
Based on the original patents for the “NX”, I am predicting a “Super” dock with an external GPU, in one of the following scenarios: 1. Switch 2 is 720p (maybe 900p) or 1080p in portable mode, comes with a standard dock, and docks to a 4K TV with some upscaling. Super Dock comes out later, capable of 4K upscaling via DLSS. 2. Switch 2 and Super Dock launch together, but are sold separately.
I have the normal Switch with LCD screen, I don’t play in handheld that often so owning the OLED would be a waste for me. I can’t believe the Switch is now 7 yrs old, didn’t get one until 6 yrs ago though because for the first yr they were hard to find. Great video Adam, and happy 7th birthday to the Switch. 🎉
I took the “simultaneous” release as there will be another version like sapphire and ruby and they get released at the same time. We just don’t know all the details yet
I wish they would make a stationary only model without screen etc.
Adam your Switch 2 idea is genius! Taking Wii U games like NintendoLand, and so on is great. Couple that with the power of nostalgia with the addition of being able to sell DS and 3DS games on it, like oh my god, it’s amazing. I’m part of the generation that grew up with the original Nintendo DS, and that would definitely increase my interest in the system. I even had a friend of mine the other day tell me he was thinking of getting a DS because we’re both at the age where we want our childhoods back. They’d be insane to not at the very least figure out some way to get those games on the system in some way. Excellent video as always, I was looking forward to this one.
They have to call it the "Super Nintendo Switch" they have to if it is a new console that builds off the same stuff
it goes to show how innovative the console/handheld was. i knew from the start that this was going to be a massive seller, because it's interesting and new. it wasn't just another console like PS5/Xbox.
The Switch being region free has been a godsend. It's so nice to be able to shop for Switch games in Japan. Or import them from Europe when, just makes it more likely a game you're interested in will get a physical copy somewhere.
@Lightspeeds
5 ай бұрын
Same I like having several EU copies and also being able to get my hands on a SRW game that has been translated into english at retail.
The rumor I heard was that they're waiting until 2025 to launch Switch 2 so that they have enough stock to go around and hopefully thwart eBay scalpers who would buy them all on day one. That seems like a reasonable guess to me.
I feel like the Switch has built up an outstanding library of games. It felt like the first 4 years were full of Wii U ports but they still had plenty of great original games. Now 7 years later I feel like the Switch has built up a lineup of great games just as great if not better than the Wii U’s original lineup. As for the Switch 2 I’d say we’ll either see it in April 2025 or October 2025. If it comes out in April 2025, they’ll probably have to announce it this year which may affect holiday sales unless if they announce it in January 2025 instead. If it comes out in October 2025 (Would be neat if it came out on October 18th to coincide with the NES’ 40th anniversary of its American launch in New York) they’ll have more time to announce it and build up to it after the holiday season so the Switch can still sell more in holiday 2024. Regardless of when it comes out in 2025, I’m sure that the rumored delay is well worth it and the Switch 2 will have an amazing launch lineup!
@3:18, You’ve got to love fan rumours - whacky and forgets the commercial reality of a business/corporation. 🙃
7 years! Wow
Never been a better time to jump into switch, content rich system which still supports physical media…
I can’t believe the switch is seven years, old .The switch is still an amazing system and wow, it was never cutting edge to begin with it more than makes up for it with the sheer amount of quality games it has, having the switch has made me realise what truly important gameplay, accessibility and fun. I’ve only had mine since October, I absolutely love my switch.
I look forward to these every year :).
Of all the tender men I've seen on KZread, you may be the most tender. Thank you.
Love your yearly retrospects Adam, really am hoping we'll see the Switch successor sooner rather than later. Its just so hard to be excited for new games on such dated hardware. Really am hoping that old Switch games get performance updates on the new system and physical cards are also fully backwards compatible as a result!
@ 15:59 I proposed a similar idea. But instead what if when the Switch 2 is docked u can use your OG Switch as the Wii U Gamepad or DS secondary screen. It would b more enticing to buy the Switch 2 and even more so if the Switch 2 is backwards compatible while still giving reason to own the OG Switch. They could sell a Switch Gamepad or give us the option to use our OG Switch. While I like your idea the other concept allows for the full potential of docked power with no latency, no digital only requirement and no need to build a dock with extra chips and components to process the games. The magic of the Switch is the option to play multiple ways with no compromise. I think this is it.
3:38 hahahahahah 🤣🤣🤣 great sketches as always Adam
A new mario kart would boost sales. Since they've been on mario kart eight since twenty 2013
For me the switch will go down as one of the greatest systems of all time. Nintendo properly hit out the park with this one.
I'm definitely ready for a switch 2 but want all the games to carry over and carts.
Oh I had a solid hunch it would be a major hit with the reveal trailer showing Skyrim on it. Console-tier games on a handheld was everything I ever wanted and I figured others thought the same. I bought one as soon as I could afford one in September of 2017 and I still play it regularly.
Adam rules Dreamcast
I haven't participated in this Gen at all as the backlog of the previous generations has me busy, but the switch looks like an interesting buy in 2024. The lack of a price drop is probably the main reason I don't have one. It's pretty clear to me that the patented Nintendo Quality ™️ of just making games that are fun still works. Graphical improvements don't matter as much in 2024 as they did back in 1999, or when 3d polygons changed everything.
Compare the DS to my favorite hand held the Nintendo Advance & the DS was leaps & bounds ahead! The SNES also had that WOW factor over the NES. The jump from 16 bit SNES to the Nintendo64 would have been another WOW factor if it wasn't for the PS1. I can still remember that commercial for the Switch where a dude was playing before work & then he just picked it up out of the console & continued playing while walking to work. That was a WOW factor! Will the Switch 2 have this WOW factor or just be in my opinion like the PS5 which looks like a PS4?
Maybe one of the best video games consoles of all time. Not just from sales perspective but also the vast library of games and the versatile ways to experience games. In these perilous times in gaming Switch is, still, a breath of fresh air.
Interesting analysis, I like your idea of the new Switch successor borrowing from the concept of the Wii U. A this point I don't really care about the 9th generation of gaming. It's all been done basically, and I've played too many games anyway. I don't need any new systems, or to spend my money on them. :)
I would LOVE an OLED Lite later this year, still one contained unit with no joy cons, but with a slightly larger and OLED screen.
I love how there were sirens in the background when you were talking about the possibility of an all-digital Switch 2 lmao. Nintendo is the least likely company to do that.
I don’t think we can rule out a “mid-gen refresh”. Yea, the market desires a “next-gen console”, but that’s because gamers know there is a PS5 is out there. But in practice, PS5 is struggling to put out exclusive games due to the development time frames needed to put out a game that showcases its hardware power. We are still getting PS4-PS5 cross gen games. That tells us that there are limits what developers are willing and able to put out. So I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a console refresh that is conceptually what a “Switch Pro” type release that we were expecting a few years ago. And if this does happen, then start preparing for the possibility of the Switch to carry on into 2026 and 2027. A bit of a hot take, or maybe not.
It's nice that the Switch is so successful, because it reasserts Nintendo as a preeminent video game company, especially after the ghetto alley fire that was the WiiU.
I think there's only one problem with your theory on what they could do with the switch 2 and that is they would not sell you the games DS, original Nintendo system, super Nintendo or whatever they decide to do, they're going to do exactly what they're doing now and put it behind the subscription model you will own nothing and you will be happy
Xenoblade, Metroid Dread, Mario Odyssey, it's given me some real fond memories in this past decade, and a feeling of fun like old times that most modern games just haven't been able to replicate. Love it or hate it, it's really been a blast. The fact it's up there with the DS and PS2 sales is further proof that power is unnecessary when the games are great.
My sister got me my Switch for Christmas back in 2018. I believe it was Christmas of 2018, I don’t really remember.
When the switch became official, I saw a report that said they had a 10yr deal for the "switch family of systems". We currently have 3 to 4 switch consoles and we are at year 7. New generation may not come till 2027(depending of if that's based on release date or manufacturing date.
I don't think tears of the kingdom sold units as most of the sales for tears was in the first two weeks but the switch sold 6.9 million switches in the holiday.
16:40 Adam basically described the steam deck or basically any device that does steam remote play
13:10 Would love to see Nintendo release something like a Switch Lite OLED model. Or, they could release a non-handheld/dock only version of the Switch.
That pattern does make sense. How nintendo slims down their successful console
11:46 Nintendo released the New 2DS XL on July 2017, 4 months after the Switch launched. The handheld at the time was ~66M life to date sales and went on to finish ~76M units at the end of 2019. They were up YOY in 2017 actually. I hope Nintendo has a Switch mini to replace the Lite model, something Vita sized. SNES Jr also came out in 1997 after the N64, and NES Top loader was in 1993 iirc, Nintendo has a long history of this sort of late model support right at the beginning of the successor's life.
Your idea about having the dock do certain computational tasks sounds like a variation on Steam's Remote Play, which has been out for years. So that technology already exists. The big problem I see with it would be that having essentially a computer both in the handheld and in the dock would make the price of the console a lot higher. There's also the possible problem that this becomes like the Sega Saturn where it had two CPUs, which is something that made the Saturn ridiculously complicated to program for. That would be a bad move for Nintendo since they have had trouble with keeping third-party support in the past because their hardware is so different. The fact that the Switch is essentially a souped-up Android tablet helped it get over that hump in 2017, and I think their engineers are smart enough to know not to spoil that.
7 years ago today, I picked up BOtW for WiiU and had a hell of time. Played it through twice!
I remember attending a street fighter 5 tournament when this thing dropped. I was of the mindset as well that WTF nintendo...now? I think the PS4 and switch have the most in my collection in terms of games. Well played ninty.
"You will own nothing and you will be happy"
Two things I want for a successor: 1) Streetpass! Bring it back! 2) Have the controllers have a microphone that makes noises at me. I miss the stupid sounds that the Wiimote would make
Nintendo is keeping 5G tech super tight lipped. One article in the last 4 or 5 years. Yet it’s never discussed anymore. Target demographic is kids going to school - mobility is paramount. They did R and D with Pokémon GO. Laughable that we still can’t have this discussion - reeks of NDA
I got my switch in 2018, it was the Diablo 3 limited edition one. I was thinking about getting the oled model but I’ll probably just wait for the next one at this point. Hopefully the next switch has an option for oled at a cost like how it works now but for the new system
I'm looking forward to the Paper Mario 2 remake! I wish Nintendo would push more Gamecube ports to the Switch!
I haven't even gotten into the switch yet but really enjoy looking at gameplay once in a while. I'm still playing the Nintendo 64. But im glad I have another gem console to get into in another 20-25 years. I know that sounds like a joke to most of you but I'm not the newest best hardware person. I like to enjoy my retro media just as if it were fresh by other peoples standards today, because it's still pretty awesome in my eyes.
Feels like a totally different time when the Switch was first revealed and came out. Did not expect it to do so well and have great third party support. Finally chose to get one only a few months after Smash Ultimate released. It's definitely one of my favourite systems for sure with the best thing Nintendo has done in recent years. Now though the Steam Deck (and other companies versions of it) is giving the Switch some competition
I bought a switch, played Breath of the Wild Dog for about 20 hours, got so pissed off my weapons broke all the time, quit, haven’t played switch in years. I’ve heard switch 2 might be 720P, big upgrade
Well now I own Nintendo Switch lite It was my cousin But I played Breath of the wild and i recently bought it for the Wii U OMG what an amazing game
Honestly, 2023 might have been the best year of the Switch when it comes to great exclusive games being constantly released for it. Fire Emblem Engage, Metroid Prime Remastered, Tears of The Kingdom, Pikmin 4, Super Mario RPG and Super Mario Wonder are just the biggest names, at this point, the Switch should be considered the best Nintendo console of all time.
I keep seeing the rumor that new switch will be as powerful as a base model PS4 and that scares me ...but if (like you said) the dock actually adds more horsepower bringing it closer to current gen consoles that would be awesome.
I figure the Switch 2 would be setup to play DS/3DS. Adding those apps would get more people on board for their online subscription service.
Searched for an old photo of me and my brother at a Denny's after the midnight release with our switch systems. Wanted to look because it might be the last Switch anniversary before the next system that comes out 🤔
I can't believe that the Switch is 7 years old already, I remember watching your unboxing and initial thoughts on the Switch and getting my own like it happened yesterday. I have loved the Switch. It's been a great console with loads of great games. I can't see the Switch outselling the PS2 unless Nintendo continues to support it right through 2025, which I also don't see happening. Nintendo definitely could keep the Switch going, and in all honesty, I can see this being another N64 to GameCube transition where Nintendo reluctantly moves on from the Switch, but I do believe that we will see a successor either by the end of 2024, or early 2025.
I say the switch is near the end of its lifespan because the oled model of the switch is basically nintendo trying to get as much money as they can out platform.

I mean, that version came out three years ago.
I don't see nintendo putting hardware in both the handheld and the dock beyond maybe some basic boosts or upscaling technology. Nintendo of all people wouldn't make something that expensive to have a full fledged console in both the screen and the dock. But I had a similar idea where the hardware is still all inside of the switch, but it could cast to the dock and effectively be switch/wii u in that regard. Which would be a really cool feature.
The switch might be the most fun I’ve had picking up games and playing them on!
I see the era of distinct console generations fading away. I think it will be more about "eco systems" than consoles.* I think the games will just be for "Nintendo switch" and it won't specify v1 verse v2. It will just become similar to phones, where apps are simply listed as "for iphone". As opposed to saying iphone 14 vs iPhone 15. I'm not really a playstation guy, so correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't we seeing that most games run on both ps4 and ps5, and that exclusives are few and far between? *I'm thinking of that comment from the xbox podcast, that Xbox is anything with a screen.
I personally think covid single handedly extended the life of switch 1-2 years
