Wii U - 2 Years Later - Predictions, Fears, Games - Adam Koralik

So here are my thoughts on Nintendo's Wii u after two years of using it. I also largely discuss the state of the Nintendo corporation. I will be doing the same thing for the Microsoft XBox One, I have previously done this for the Sony Playstation 4.

One time back in 2014 I was in class and the teacher asked the class what the new game consoles are. I raised my hand and said the Wii U. Then some girl sitting next to me said the Wii isn’t new. And for the rest of the day I started to question life

Mmmmmm I'm not a big fan of the wii's controller, but I think you're overreacting, I wasn't that bad, I mean I played amd enjoyed Skyward sword, DKC returns and the two Mario Galaxy games using it, sure It wasn't as comfortable as a 360 controller but it got the job done

AdamKoralik Maybe it is because Wii was actually what got me into console gaming, and the classic ps2 and pc gaming was something I only slightly tried before that and those two could never get me hooked, I could honestly never go back to classic controls after the Wii. Once I tried Mario Kart Wii with the wheel, that was it for me, I was sold. I mean I *can* use the classic controls if I need to, but it is just too many sticks and buttons I have to fight with and that gets in the way. I can see, however, why a traditional gamer would hate on these type of controls.

That's not Sony or Microsoft faults, those are the lazy third party devs' faults. When Sony and Microsoft makes a first party game like Infamous or Sunset Overdrive they're polished. Likewise, when a lazy third party company makes a game for the Wii U (Sonic Boom) it's not polished.

I think the #1 reason why the wiiu is failing is due to the lack od advertising. When was the last time u saw a wiiu ad or if ever. Nobody knows the wiiu exist as a new standalone console. I truly believe nintendo was banking on people buying the wiiu because of wii sales.

Lundun McMillan xD Yeah. The Ouya was actually a great console in my opinion -- it was just VERY misunderstood because of how different it was from traditional game systems. The Ouya took a lot of big risks by being very experimental and not conforming to standards in the game industry. That, along with a lot of the bugs it had, is likely why it failed. But it was a great underrated game system. ^^

Retrospectively, the biggest problem seems to be, outside of branding, that they left themselves in this weird middle ground where the gamepad was required to have, but rarely ever used. After DKTF came out, fewer and fewer games used the gamepad to do anything aside from off-tv play, and the only things it was used for was the menus in the Zelda remakes and a few games in the final year of the Wii U's life, and a few niche games like Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, and Xenonblade Chronicles X, and one of those didn't even get a physical release while another had a physical release but no english dub and was full of censorship. Niche titles aside, Nintendo neither took advantage of the technology nor did they take the bold step to make it optional. I find this incredibly frustrating, as to this day, the Wii U is my favorite game console. It had tons of potential, the gamepad was amazing when it was actually used properly, and the interface was charming and community created on the system through Miiverse was great. Now the closest thing we get to Miiverse is the drawing function in Splatoon 2 being taken over by furries cause there is no real way to form a new, organic community on it. Instead other communities choose to get on and take over. The Switch has no charm, it's a sterile machine, and despite the games being great, it lacks a lot of the fun that the Wii U organically had through its form alone. The PS4 doesn't have any real charm either, it's just kinds all business, though it's at least a bit better than the Switch and isn't just squares on a grey background. Xbox has it's own style too, but nothing like Miiverse or the Wara Wara plaza. They didn't have the often cool and useful when utilized mechanical potential of the gamepad, or the diverse selection of control options. It really is disappointing what Nintendo did, cause that really could've been great, and they were too far up their own asses to take advantage of it

The Nintendo Wii U is essentially Nintendo's Sega Saturn. It has a lot of great and innovative stuff that a gamer would love, but due to bad business practices and marketing, it didn't gain the necessary appreciation to attract a big enough audience. I'm hoping to get a Sega Saturn someday, since some of the games look amasing.

I do not regret buying my Wii U, nor will I have any regrets when I buy my Switch a little over a month from now. Sony has not really impressed me with the PS4 (it's an entry level gaming PC with no freedom), and Microsoft really turned me off with their initial ideas on the Xbox One. Both companies Are going the direction of media box, rather than pure games... Nintendo will always have a place in my home.

Highly underrated in my opinion. I also got bayonetta 2 and smash bros. Both great games. The Wii U has A LOT of great games for it. Hell I bought it just for the exclusives and theres still dozens of games for it I plan to buy. Great console. Wish it sold better.

Why is it failing? How about the fact that it gets almost no third party support? I just did a quick count and 10 of my 13 Wii U games are first party Nintendo titles. Almost every big game that comes out this generation never sees the light of day on the Wii U. Until Nintendo's home consoles start getting multi-platform titles they're never going to be taken all that seriously by most gamers.

  • @BlesterTamer01
    @BlesterTamer019 жыл бұрын

Well, practically, Nintendo is giving the Wii U that treatment, of being your 2nd console at home, like "Yeah, you can have the PS4/XBOX1, but you can also have the Wii U for our good exclusives". They are getting a lot of good exclusives for next year, like Splatoon, Xenoblades Cronicles X, and of course the new Legend of Zelda. It's looking promising for the Wii U, it just needs to keep it alive. If 2015 does nothing for it, nothing will. BTW, i admit that i had my doubts about the Gamepad before buying the Wii U, but now that i have it and tried it, i don't want to drop it, it's just too comfortable for me to be playing on my bed that being on a living room in front of a TV to play most of the games that have been released.

I am a nerd in many topics, but not gaming, but I understand your POV very well. Most gaming reviews are skin deep and relevant only to 15 year old kids (or 28 year olds who still think they are 15). They are passionate yes, but speak so informally that it is hard to follow and I usually wind up going to another review. I like you going behind the scenes that a real grown up in the business world can start understand. So thank you for your perspective and insight that smart people, not necessarily gaming peeps, can understand. I haven't played a video game console since the original Nintendo (I was an expert on Mike Tyson's Punch Out!), but I feel your insight gave me the largest "catching up", so I feel I can make a better decision. Thanks again!

With the PS4, you can remove the internal 2.5 inch internal hard drive and replace it with any other 2.5 inch Hard Drive whether it be Solid State or Hard disc based without voiding your warranty which in my opinion is better than using an external drive. PS4 is better, it's as simple as that.

Gaming God True - Adam is a SEGA junkie and a fanboy to its core. I know he's a bit biased towards Nintendo as well, although he'll never admit it. Back in the day when SEGA died and was raped by Microsoft (because that's what happened in my opinion) all the fanboys like Adama, which were worshiping SEGA and bashing Nintendo for not doing things (lol at that mindset) jumped shit right in the open arms of s0ny! Yes. Some of them even went to Microsoft which replaced their beloved SEGA... Why - because they were hating on Nintendo way before s0ny and M$ enter the field. But as I've already said - Adam do have some legit points in his videos, and his passion for the topic is what makes him so popular, and I consider myself his fan.

Either way - I hope they do better for now on. We as gamer may only lose if some of the three go away. Well, as you have maid your point several times now, this might just happen, but let's hope it's not that soon after all :-) But if Nintendo is making such loses, why are they hiring people, buying buildings and overall expanding their business operations? AdamKoralik Of course it's a just a math. They make profit for two quarters, and they will surely make profit for third quarter (holiday season), I am pretty sure there will be annual profit for this financial year. For rest of the video you have logical point, but I love they decided to keep gamepad and make him more useful. And yes, Nintendo saw what's all wrong with Wii U, and they also see what's all good with PS4, I am pretty sure that next Nintendo console will be pretty good, like PS4 after PS3, and yes they will drop Wii brend and gamepad. ;) As for Wii U, they will keep Wii U userbase happy and try to make a profit, wille in silence they preparing for next console. You still dont have DKTF!?

Damir D I will be sad if on the next Nintendo console the game pad is missing. Think about it - all Nintendo consoles are backwards compatible - at least a generation back. So, if they remove the game pad from their next console, this pattern will have to break. And that would be a bad thin! I love the game pad - it's amazing. Zombi U for one can't be played without it, and many others. As for Nintendo - many guys have tried to bury them and all failed. At the end - only time will tell :-)

Terminator Juice It's a nice thought, but it's more complicated than that. Also highly risky for a company that doesn't tend to take many financial risks. More likely Nintendo will go half way with a budget console (removes extra USB ports and stuff) and a smaller gamepad.

I bought one and he said "not into motion controls and bowling and shit", I had to explain that it wasn't an add-on for the Wii, it was in fact an entirely different console. I've had arguments with Nintendo fans who claim naming it 'Wii' wasn't a mistake at all, I think it was the show-stopper for the console though.

The Wii U is definitely my favorite of this gen, and in fact is my second favorite console of all time (that SNES is hard to top). I adore the Gamepad and I find myself just fucking around on it randomly and having fun but yeah, I think you are right, if it goes they can do an $80 price drop (and then sell the Gamepads right next to the consoles for $80 or even $50, no big deal), as it is it's too close in price to the PS4 and Xbone. But the biggest issue is that nobody knows that it exists, still. For exclusive content and great games, you can't get any better than Nintendo, but how sweet things would be with third party support. Talk about a juggernaut. Then it could take on my beloved SNES. Then it would BE my beloved SNES.

Even as this year comes to a close, the Wii U gamer has a lot to look forward to in 2015. Seeing such demonstrations and sneak peeks of upcoming games really has me interested I have also just picked up a PS4 earlier this month bundled with GTA V. I've put quite a few hours into the game on the PS4 despite already having the same game on PS3. It's awesome to see what a new generation system can do to an existing game but I'm also a bit torn. I really haven't found much of anything yet that really captures me to spend on it. Most everything so far has been a cross generation multi platform title with very little that shows the generational leap that really shows me just what the PS4 can really do on it's own. This is in stark contrast as the Wii U and all of it's exclusive titles thus far have shown me what the systems technology is capable of, but knowing what I can expect out of the Wii U in capable hands. Even from some of the multiplats such as Assassin's Creed: Black Flag which I have had spent hours and hours of sleep simply since the game was actually fun for me to play. Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 have been wonderful and amazingly smooth and when I had picked up Bayonetta 2 and Smash Bros. 4U, seeing the Wii U run such games at 1080p/60, simply floored me with the rising quality of exclusive games. I can't believe that the underdog is doing well in some areas but floundering in others. With my PS4, I still haven't made a "want list" while Nintendo has me excited for the year to come. I'm sure Sony will gain traction as the exclusive games make a showing.

Hi Adam. Really enjoying this series. I think the Wii U is hanging in there despite Nintendo's gormlessness. It all started with making an underpowered system (though the same could be said about the PS4 and Xbone) but then they compounded this by making life hell for early developers with their lack of support before launch. That got things off to a bad start with third party developers and we know how that has gone. You said it; arrogance. Couple of things I'd like to say as an owner for almost a year. I love the Wii U. As a father of the sons under the age of seven it's perfect. The list of exclusives keeps me happy and I have my PS3 and 360 for the adult orientated stuff. They love Nintendo (it's in the genes) stuff and I grew up with it, so we're all happy. I don't need a constant stream of releases and shovelware like the Wii had, just enough quality titles to keep us entertained - and that we get. And more are coming. Just not from Ubisoft or the others Nintendo has pissed off. I agree with you on the gamepad, much as it pains me. I tend to go with the pro controller if I can but have nothing against using the pad. But all it seems to be used for is maps. Dropping it would help sales. Definitely. Nintendo need to grit their teeth and just do it. Apart from anything else, in the UK you can't buy the gamepad separately, so even if you really like it - or drop one in the sink - you can't get another without buying the whole console. Which is utterly, utterly dumb. But it can be done. See Kinect for further details. One idea I had to kind of compensate for this would be to allow 3DS owners to use their handheld as a Wii U controller. It might not be the greatest idea, but there are millions of them and a lot of kids would love the novelty. I know you have a thing about dlc, but that is another area Nintendo could exploit. I don't mean in the rip off way favoured by the competition. But with Nintendo's support for HTML5 it could become the platform of choice for indie developers. And look at games like Guacamelee or Shovel Knight. It can be done. Also, the way Nintendo handled the Mario Kart 8 dlc was a good example of what is possible. Lots of tracks and karts at a good value price, and long enough after the original not to look like cashing in Destiny-style. Nintendo marketing also sucks. Nintendo Direct is not a replacement for proper, well-funded advertising campaigns that reach the target audience. Ones that explain that Wii U is not a tablet add-on, for example. The last amiibo advert I just saw was patronising crap. And Nintendo Direct? Having some Japanese executive in a suit explain in broken English why you should buy some game is foolhardy, if not downright idiotic. Cool it ain't. Now that the official Nintendo magazine is dead in the UK, they need to get the message out in more effective ways. OK that's enough from me. Only ranting because I actually care about this system and wish Nintendo would stop shooting themselves in the foot. Would love to hear your response.

AdamKoralik Without re-watching the entire video, I seem to remember you predicted 2017 for the next Nintendo console. Hey, guess what. You were basically right. Looks like the Wii U has only another year or so before Nintendo turn their attention elsewhere. Here's Miyamoto to AP: "We're focused on providing a robust line-up of Wii U software for next year. It seems like we've managed to do that this year and people are very happy with what we've done on Wii U. For the time being, our focus is on the Wii U hardware, but Nintendo as a whole has groups working on ideas for new hardware systems. While we're busy working on software for the Wii U, we have production lines that are working on ideas for what the next system might be." That's a pretty clear hint that the Wii U's days are very numbered. But while it may look like the Wii U had a short lifespan (compared to the 360 and PS3) people forget that five years is really the norm.

Thanks Adam for liking the Wii U! I own one myself and I think it's great. The gamepad's an awesome piece of hardware. I just think it's not selling well because of poor advertisement on Nintendo's part.

I don't have a Wii U but i started collecting games for it. Might as well before the game values skyrocket in the next few years. I may buy one if I can find one under $100

Great video Adam, I have all 3 systems and have had my U from launch... It has gathered a bit of dust but Smash and MK8 are two of the finest games ever made... Keep up the great videos

Another great video Adam. The Wii U is a console I went to get alongside the ps4. As I said on your ps4 video I'll get the ps4 in a few years, and would like to get the wii u alongside it as I have a soft spot for Nintendo. I got the gamecube at launch in 2002 for €200 (compared to the Wii u which is €220 two years after launch!). I was a playstation kid but switched to the gamecube for the 7th gen because of all the great games from rareware on the n64 that I was jealous of. I was looking forward to perfect dark 2 amongst others. Sadly Nintendo sold rare and I was crushed! The gamecube had some great games but it was blown away by the ps2 and gta. I have 4 gamecubes now and love playing the classic games on it. I also have a wii, which is essentially a gamecube with motion control (and the later models remove the GC compatibility which is pretty terrible), to play the handful of good wii games and complete my Nintendo collection. I would love for the Wii u to come down in price and get some quality innovative Nintendo games like the good old days. Super Mario 3D World looks amazing and bayonetta 2 looks great as well. I think mass effect 3 is coming out for it as well, so there are some ports. Oh well lets just see what Nintendo do. Although I saw a pretty pathetic statement from them this week, saying that people will buy it over the other two because 'its the cheapest of the three.' Sad bullshit.

What's funny is that while Sony made no profit from PS3, it did end up outselling the 360 globally.

Very nice discussion Adam and I agree with the dropping of the gamepad. It will be interesting to see how Wii U sales do this holiday season, there seems to be a discrete price drop here in the U.K. and Ireland!
