Microsoft has announced sweeping changes to the pricing and structure of its Game Pass subscription service. There are price hikes across the board: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is going up to $19.99/month, an increase of $3. And the basic console tier is to be phased out and replaced with a new Xbox Game Pass Standard tier that will not include day-one releases like the forthcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
The changes were reported by Windows Central and confirmed by Microsoft on an official Xbox support page.
Effective immediately, Xbox Game Pass for Console is no longer available for new subscribers. Members who are already subscribed to Game Pass for Console and have automatic payment renewal enabled will be able to continue to use it, including the access it offers to day-one games.
Xbox Game Pass Standard will become available to new or lapsed subscribers “in the coming months,” Microsoft said. This new tier will not include day-one releases of Microsoft-published games like Black Ops 6, Obsidian’s Avowed, and Bethesda’s Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. But it will include online multiplayer, which is currently not part of the Game Pass for Console plan. Microsoft did not say how long it would take for its big first-party games, or other day-one releases, to cycle into the back catalog of “hundreds” of games offered on the Standard tier. At $14.99/month, it will be more expensive than Game Pass for Console, which has a monthly cost of $10.99.
PC Game Pass subscribers will continue to get day-one games, albeit with a price increase of $2/month. But Game Pass Ultimate is now the only option for console players who want day-one releases and aren’t already signed up to the existing Console plan. (Microsoft sources told Windows Central that “the vast majority” of Game Pass subscribers are already on the Ultimate tier, anyway.)

well, if you want MP for a lot of games (like Helldivers2/COD MP for example) - you need ps+ essential. i'm guessing MS requires something for MP as well; but i'm not sure. if you don't care about MP gaming - it's definitely optional.

Goystation. The free tiers isn't even really an issue . Before you had xbox gold Gamepass console Gamepass ultimate Now you have gamepass core (replaced gold) Console Ultimate they just changed the name of gold.
You do realize that Game Pass is optional right? People don’t have to buy it as I usually just buy the full game right out the flood gates and only have GamePass Core for the online services. and Xbox is still in the top 5 of Microsoft’s most profitable brands so I doubt they’re in any trouble like you’re saying as Microsoft has the money to do a strategy restructure since they’re one of the few companies that’s in the Trillions in terms of worth.

Games like Persona 3 Reload adding to Game Pass day one at launch is the worst mistake. Atlus and Sega should've thought of that before they signed up to work with Microsoft. Ever since Atlus games trailer comes out with an Xbox logo, I think it's time we should launch an investigation on why Atlus keeps favoring Xbox, which is already dead low on hardware sales and almost non-existant in Japan, over PlayStation. So we should really get to the bottom of this.
Everyone defending the price hikes, are you okay with $24 a month? They raised the price August 12 2023 from $15 to $17, now to $20. By this time next year, I would expect a $24/month price.

As a busy adult, I won't finish more than 3-4 games a year, so spending $240 a year on gamepass makes zero sense. I'd rather just buy and own 3-4 games a year. (not to mention I already have a huge backlog)

The discourse around this is very strange. A lot of people seem to be fine with price increases. Im sure this is no big deal when video games are your only expense. When you have bills, rent, kids, other responsibilities, etc; the more the price goes up the less it becomes important to people. Im a ps5 and pc gamer. I have an xbox but i dont use it much. I think psn is much too expensive and frankly, when my sub ends i dont know if ill renew the most expensive version. I love video games. Its my favorite hobby. But straight up if the prices get too bad, ill just back out. The subscriptions are too expensive. The games alone are getting too expensive. I make good money but i have a lot of responsibilities and bills and at the end of the day, video games aint that important and that hurts to have to say

Look for deals. The average game to play for me is $13.14 and that includes some day 1 purchase. Plan your ps+ purchases around sales like black friday or days of play. You'll get 25-40% off. Plan for gamestop sales. Like there was just a buy 2 get 1 free. That's essentially 33% off any used game. The 4 for $10/$20/$40 gamestop deal comes around now and then. eBay is always rock bottom prices. Gaming doesn't have to be expensive. Take advantage of epic's free games. I have like 6 or 7 of them i actually want to play over the years. Plus they do a 25% off coupon they give that can be used on already sale prices making it a better deal then steam. Plus their reward program can cut down prices a little bit too.

PlayStation had more active users than Xbox, plus Xbox has sold significantly less consoles than PlayStation, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next Xbox flopped. Regardless, people are going to buy the PlayStation 6 and people are going to buy the next Xbox.
I will have my box for the games I own but this Game Pass stuff is nuts and I guess I agree with you this time around when it comes with your Xbox ideas.

I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. I don’t care if I own games or not. Since I was a child, I would play games, beat them, then move on. Whether I rented them, purchased them, or played them on subscription services I’m happy! Definitely lucky!
I still see the buy game option on the Xbox store. Separately from the gamespass option. Doesn't that mean I still have the buy game option like Playstation 🤔?

The streaming service model is questionably viable. They all seem to have to spend a tremendous amount of CapEx and lose a massive amounts of money while they "grow" their market share to the point where they can finally raise prices on their subs and hopefully start to generate profits. Only Netflix has made it over this mountain to the other side, but they burned a lot of shareholder cash to get there. I far as I know, all other streaming services (ie. Disney, Paramount, and Game Pass) are still in the spending, burning, and losing money phrase. Streaming services seemed to only be able to stay alive when they're resting on the back of their bigger, more profitable parent company. The question is -- when is enough enough? If the service can't grow, then why keep up the burn? Just ask Paramount who seems to be throwing in the towel and looking for a buyout.
I really don't think that will matter to most subscribers. They aren't going to see $240 a year, they are going to see $5 more a month. Everybody is used to all their services netflix, Hulu, spotify etc. going up in price.

Agreed cuz last month he released at least 5 Xbox videos in a weeks time just dunking on them and one of them even turned out to be a rumor that someone dug up again just for article clicks on their website.
Basically, they don’t want to tell you exactly what’s on their ach tier so that when the game/games you want aren’t on the tier you already paid for you just upgrade and then most likely eventually the games are going to be on whichever tier for shorter and shorter periods of time because they want people to pay monthly and also buy the games at retail. They’re going to phase out the OG Game Pass tier too. It sucks, but I knew this was coming.

They aren’t telling people they don’t need a PlayStation to play their games. Microsoft for whatever reason tells its player base that they don’t need a XBOX which is mix messaging and is slamming us with all these tiers. They may have the most money but they don’t know how to properly use it when it comes to their gaming division.

I have to disagree.. And to clarify I'm a so called Sony Ponie. Given the state of all digital future you get the best offer gameswise from Xbox period. I could see this going upwards of 50.00 a month and pepole will still buy this service and with the wide range of playability from a Fire Device to Pc and Consoles its the best way to play games I don't see Sony regrettably existing in the next 10yrs. Sony lost my vote when they practically terminated pshyical media. And between the 2 I'd have to go with a whole price to just have more access to games.

Xbox game pass ultimate is now $255. A year with tax and if your taxing your area is more than 6% it's even more. That's a lot of games you could buy I wonder how many people even beat four games a year?? Plus if you get them used or on sale that's a lot of games you could purchase.
