101 Biggest Games Industry Moments of All Time

Although video games may seem like a relatively recent phenomenon, the medium has actually been around, in various different forms, since the 1940s. It’s not all that shocking then, that the past eighty-odd years have been somewhat eventful for the games industry, what with all of the technological innovations, introductions of legendary characters and franchises, and, of course, more controversies than you could shake a WiiMote at. Agreed, would make it one of the most unique and detailed "history of gaming" videos. I also often wonder why they don't start the count at number 1 if it's in no particular order, starting at 101 makes little sense if you're not doing a countdown and is just asking for people to argue about placements

I feel the only reason they're doing a countdown is because that's just how they're used to doing their list videos. But with a few obvious exceptions there's no good way to prove which events were more important than others since it's a matter of opinion. So just doing it in order makes the most sense. It's not like the dates are unknown. Even if a lot of these events overlap eachother still having it in roughly chronological order is better than just randomly jumping all over the place.

I get that EA aren't the most honorable of studios and its fun to dunk on them, but the NCAA shares a lot of the blame for the issues with the College games. Schools and the NCAA have been making money off the backs of students for decades.

@@startervisions I'll be a gamer when I'm 90, provided my eyes and hands still work. I'm 39 now, so I'm nearly halfway there. Doing pretty well on the eyes part - but I did pretty much cut off 2 fingers, and had them re-attached and reconstructive surgery on them... ....but you know, I can still use them to grip a mouse, a controller, and I can still type with them despite 1 not having a tendon in the top half... so I'd say that isn't such a bad track record. A minor setback at most, lol.... Everyone including myself thought I'd outgrow my hobby, but I'm pretty dedicated to keeping part of my inner child from aging a day, if I can help it. It just isn't gonna happen while I'm still breathing. If I go, my inner child will die with me long before he grows up - I vow it.

I feel like the release of Grand Theft Auto 3 should be on this list. That game and its marketing changed how people anticipated games and influenced game design as a whole for going on 3 generations now. Before that game game adverts felt like toy advertisements. GTA 3 came in, showed off gameplay filled with shoot outs and car chases, scored to moody opera music and made it feel more like a movie or new tv show that you just HAD to see. It became an event that hadn't really been seen outside of Sonic or Mario, and that was just the beginning.

Sega failing at making consoles? The Genesis / Mega Drive was massively popular at it's time and a very serious opponent for the Super Nintendo. True though that the Saturn and the Dreamcast got the love they deserved only in hindsight. Especially the Dreamcast was so impressive and way ahead of its time, actually pretty much a very early Playstation 3 by design. Sega just marketed it the very wrong way.

Any internet dinosaur who grew up during the Nintendo/SEGA console wars had their minds _absolutely blown_ the first time Sonic appeared on a Nintendo console post-Dreamcast. It was like we had been astral projected into an alternate dimension or something because the Mario vs. Sonic hill was one that you DIED ON WITH HONOR on the playground Back In The Day. If we had been told that Sonic would someday be in games WITH Mario, none of us would have ever believed it. ....although honestly we Nintendo kids were not at all surprised when Nintendo ultimately won.😏

Nah I'll have to disagree here. The screen was better on the 1000, and it was a bit thicker so maybe a bit more comfortable for bigger hands, but basically every other feature is better on the slim redesign. I've got both, and my 1000 basically became a shelf ornament once I got the slim. I can play for 5+ hours on the slim, I'm lucky to get 2.5 - 3 on the OG Vita.

They never showed his face when he spoke with her. Trailers give us a lot more than you realise, same goes for Spider-man 2. Venom was always going to be playable.

Why did you show Genshin Impact while talking about over-saturation and a platform for micro-transactions? because it's insanely popular? xD Haha, I'll assume it was happenstance, and wasn't intended to be the example, since... It's actually a lot more fair than any other that I've personally played. Maybe if you have to have every character, they're a huge money sink, but if you just take what you can get, you'll get a lot, and odds are they'll be cool af unless you just have the worst luck ever. That isn't to say I'm a fan of that type of monetization, but considering I can just download and play the game for free any time, that's... not the most potent criticism and not much of a mark against it. I've never played any other Gacha game that gave me as much in-game real money currency for free, and got me as many characters without spending a dime, as that game. Gacha games are a cancer - but Genshin shows they can actually be worthwhile, and fair for the consumer. Fair if they aren't horribly addictive personalities with zero self control at least - but I can hardly hold MiHoYo responsible for THAT ailment. That game sets a new bar for quality - quite ironic that it comes out of China, a place known for lack thereof... Genshin Impact is of impeccable quality and those people who talk trash about it are actually taking issue with something else entirely, something other than whatever it is they claim they have a problem with - I notice they're ALWAYS different. More often than not, it boils down to something dumb as hell like "I don't like anime stuff" haha - never mind that it's technically not - I get it, it's the same thing - but it's also quality you won't find anywhere else. If you're one of those gamers who has put off trying Genshin Impact because of all the crap around it and it's uh... weirdo fanbase, knock it off and give it a try. They're a corporation, but MiHoYo are famously dedicated to getting opinion out of their fans and I can appreciate that. I take THEIR surveys, and almost no one else's - but I get a survey from them every couple months or so, at least... and the transformation that game has undergone is quite a thing indeed. The censorship in the game, and some design choices, are a little sad, but when your country of origin is a communist nation that acts proud of it's iron fist, well... you had probably best get used to censoring even the things that no one would ever imagine needed censoring.

About No.42, (1:35:35) Jeff Gerstmann fired for giving a bad review, this is so common these days, well not that they are fired but that the gaming media quite clearly are in the pockets of the publishers, IGN definitely comes to mind as they get 40% of they're revenue from Sony who BTW makes it very clear that reviewers won't get another review copy of their games if they don't praise their games 🤑🤮but hey this is why streamers that review games have become even.more popular... I for one stopped reading/viewing anything from gaming media yrs ago

PC gamers never cared about the console war ;) because we've always been about brute, overwhelming force of arms. Lay waste to your enemies, and stuff. I think my first PC was built around 2004 - with the release of Half Life 2, as it happens... and I never once turned back or regretted my path ;) so that's nearly the entire duration of the console war, I've been PC'ing it up. PC Master Race indeed ;) feel free to cope ^_^ I won't stop y'all. You deserve at least to soften the blow a bit.

Yes I am joking - I've owned some consoles over the years, and actually do own a switch as well. Though, my last XBox was a 360, and my last playstation was the PS2 ... so I guess I've effectively had little to say for MOST of the Sony vs. Microsoft vs. Nintendo thingy. After that generation of consoles there wasn't much of a point to owning anything but a capable PC - because I could, through legitimate means or otherwise, play anything those consoles could with very few exceptions, and odds are I was playing it in a superior state, often with bells and whistles (post processing) the games did not initially come with - and of course mods. I couldn't go back to console if I wanted to. I have a hard enough time using only a single control scheme in most games - I want to use my analog stick AND my mouse, depending on my situation. I am indeed a spoiled SOB. No regrets. No apologies.
