XAOC Devices Zadar as a VCO ... or four!

Музыка

Following on from my first video with the XAOC Devices Zadar making some ambience and drones (here - • XAOC Devices Zadar *FI... ) I wanted to show it as a VCO. The first patch uses four channels as four VCOs then I go through setting up a channel as a VCO, some AM modulation and a some patches. Full demo video coming soon.

    Doing this with the Nin expander is just fantastic. You can get so much modulation on it by chaining modulation sources, almost like a FM setup. But I guess it's AM? I'm still trying to figure it out but it's really fun. First time I've wanted to buy a 2nd copy of a module, since now I want a 2nd one to perform its usual purposes while the first one busy being a VCO+modulation.

    Nice! I had been using it as an EG and LFO (to modulate warp another channel's warp mostly). I hadn't thought about using it as an audio range oscillator.

    Zadar! I love this module! I placed it in most of my modular grid racks. This plus drezno is my alternative to Maths. I did not know it could serve as an oscillator, and quite competently by the sound of it. It will take me about 7 months to save up for this, an FM Aid, and a 104 hp powered case. It will go with the Neutron nicely!

    COOL! I didn't know you could audio rate these too! It seems like you could use 3 of them plus 3-4 filters to make a polyphonic with "ADSR" for both amplitude and filters with everything perfectly matched by duping your curves across each section.

    Yep, I'm a total newb and I could sure use that full demo. I had no issue buying it. The Batumi and expander is on my next to buy list too. Actually the Batumi was suggested to me, but the Zadar was not. I read a lot of complaints about the encoders getting wonky too. But the envelope generator that was recommended to me (Cosmotronic Delta-V) isn't readily available here in the states, so I got the Zadar.

    Have you found a way to improve pitch tracking? Have they announced a fix to it? Doesnt seem to be working too well between -48 and -51 in the settings. Imprecise tracking. I would want a fix that locks -50 as non-approximate 1v/oct. Would be perfect along with Nin expander, making this an insane oscillator module.

  • @DivKid

    Awesome! I didn't even think about this. Can you module the warp or the shape in addition to v/oct on a particular channel?

  • @DivKid

    @DivKid

    5 жыл бұрын

    no, it's one input per channel. So once you're 1v/oct controlling the time/pitch you'd need have external VCAs and shapers (which is like most oscillators so that's fine).

  • @KentuckyMusic

    Sounds great! Looks like a super fun way to use Zadar, do you know if an expander module is planned for the future? Would be nice to have more than one assign per envelope.

  • @DivKid

    @DivKid

    yeah one CV in per envelope can be a shame with how much there is to potentially modulate. I don't know anything about an expander, has that had a mention somewhere else?

    It is mentioned on the official website that an expander is planned, stating: "individual, assignable CV inputs and manual trigger push-buttons ". Will be an insta buy for owners of it I think. My personal gripe, however, is that it wont save settings on power off. I always forget to save what I made.

    It's possible to use it as one shot quad complex digital drum generator? Being an envelope it can be triggered and if you force it to audio rate, as you've done here, you can achieve something like that?

    Am I right in thinking that Freely Assignable CV is not correct? That only one CV can be assigned per channel and I cannot pick CV A & B to go to Envelope A? To get more than one mod (see one for time and another for warp) I have to wait for a yet to be unveiled Nin expander? Is this the case, and if so do you find the lack of CV limiting?

  • @DivKid

    @DivKid

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi David, with the firmware I have that is correct. I haven't had time to upgrade yet. And no I don't find it restrictive at all. The shapes can be so complex anyway that they're not needing much modulation to get interesting things going.
