Regardless of what opinion anyone might have of this movie, I think they simply HAVE to admit that this number was sheer genius. I absolutely LOVE the way in which the two sections which at first glance could not possibly seem more different work together at the end -- the music, the choreography, even the color palettes!

The blending of two genres should have resulted in garbage music but it was perfect. John Farrar wrote this song and even when I was a kid, I recognized it as incredible. The guy has to be a genius to make this work the way he did.

I totally agree! I saw this movie when I was 12 and even then I thought it wasn't such a good movie. But this sequence is genius! And also the music by ELO is memorable!

Honestly one of the most clever musical numbers in film history! I get chills every time the two bands come together! Brilliant beyond belief!

The punk band was The Tubes, the same group that scored a mega Hit in 1983 with, "She's a Beauty"

I still get goosebumps when they merge! The music in Xanadu is superb...how did it not win best soundtrack?! And costumes?! Not one person could get enough of Olivia Newton-John...she was an absolute beauty with a voice to match.

Whoever designed the costumes for the 1940s dancers in particular was a genius because you have so many different archetypes from the period -- the beatnik, the bobby-soxer, the cigarette girl, the college boy, the gun moll, the sailor, the torch singer, the USO girl, the zoot suit, etc.

​@@OreadNYCBeatniks were in post war, so late 40s into the 50s. Zoot suits were definitely in the 40s, but again, post war. Material rationing prevented such wasteful tailoring. The costumes on the singers, though, were spot on. Beautiful in both material and design, and those amazing snoods! A wonderful tribute to The Andrews Sisters.

After 30+ years, this scene STILL holds up! Possibly the best part of the whole movie.

The talent in this movie has long gone unlauded. Gene Kelly and Olivia Newton John together was an incredible pairing of two powerhouse musicians. No wonder Michael Beck never got the kind of accolades his performance should have earned him. Two bright stars left him in the shadows, unfortunately. He was much better than he was given credit for.

This will always be my favorite movie, because I will always get the same feelings that I got when I first saw it, and I was 7. I know its campy, but the pure whimsical positivity will always be hard to match. Its just fun. Anyone who can't shut off their internal critics and just enjoy the experience, simply don't know how to live.

Hey everybody. I was 15 in 1980 when this movie came out (today I'm 45) and I went to see this movie 3 times just in order to see this scene. I think the same than alikishimmies..."the most genius melding of genres in the history of music and dance"... I live in Venezuela and today few people remember this movie and I had to work hard for mor than ten years to find a copy untill finally this year, 2011, I got it. All of us (adult people) are the ones who lived that magic. Blessings

I bought the soundtrack (on vinyl, no less), my little sister and I learned the lyrics, then went back five more times to start sing-alongs.

i will never tire of seeing the part when the two couples dancing meet in the middle, and the music blends. i just feel such an impact.

This still sends shivers up my spine! The merging of the two styles was brilliant!

It's funny, when I was a kid I preferred the Tubes' portion of the song, but now that I'm older and into swing music, I love the 40's section. The mix is completely BRILLIANT. It's a shame the Tubes have so disowned their contribution that they REFUSE to ever play this song again.

@@youtoo2233 Very Good! I have The Album as well and The DVD. It's still a Cult Classic. When you get down to it, it's about having a Dream and making it come true. This Movie and American Gigolo (that John Travolta turned down at the last minute because he was upset at Moment By Moment being a Flop) showed a turning point in Society. Danny McGuire (Played By Gene Kelly RIP) and Sonny Malone (Played By Michael Beck) as well as Julian Kaye hung out in a Coffee Shop. In England it's Synonymous but not so much in North America. Now it's A Multi Billion Dollar Industry. So much has happened to Olivia Newton John. She got an Honorary Doctorate from an Australian University and was made a "Dame" by Queen Elizabeth. I can't remember the Last Female British Born Rock Star who got that Title. She's in good company with Mick Jagger, Elton John, Paul McCartney and her former Mentor Cliff Richard.

The songwriter for both the 40s and the 80s bands is John Farrar. The man who wrote the hits for GREASE. Really one of the most underrated song writers of that era. Even if the storyline wasn't Oscar worthy, the music was.

Yes, in fact "Hopelessly Devoted To You" was inspired by Skeeter Davis "The End Of The World". Also let's not forget that Barry Gibb wrote The Theme Song for Grease. What I really admired was that although her Best Girlfriend and Former Singing Partner Pat Farrar never went far as well as her Big Sister Rona (RIP) who was a backing performer on The UK Comedy Series Benny Hill, never showed any Ill Will because Olivia became a legend and they didn't.

Yes, in fact during the 1960's, John Farrar was in a Group called The Strangers in Australia. If you can check out Australian Music from the 1960's. A lot of talent from that Country and although The Bee Gees and Olivia Newton John were the most successful to come out of Australia musically at that time, they did kick the door open for future Musicians. Darcel Wynne would later marry Glenn Carl Leonard of The Temptations who became an Evangelist and sadly enough would die of Cancer.

It should be noted that the 80s are just as old now as the 40s were then. And the beauty hasn't faded at all.

One of the few unironically cool moments of this movie.

If the whole movie had been on this level (even though there's a certain 2D flatness to the sequence), it most certainly would have been the big hit because the soundtrack itself is almost epic ... (This song was The Tubes and ONJ doing boogie woogie pop but don't forget half the record is ELO in top form ... )

Xanadu is basically a bunch of really good music videos strung together by something I don't even think qualifies as a plot. Like, it helps to think of "All Over the World" as an ELO video that happens to have Gene Kelly in it.

Best scene in the whole movie, though I'm part of the unpopular minority that actually liked/likes Xanadu as a whole. I'm always amazed at how easily they merge the two styles of music from eras four decades apart that seem to be so radically different from each other yet turn out to be quite similar.

Agreed it's the best part. But f that nonsense that this movie isn't good for what it was trying to do. It's fun and a throwback to the days when musicals were in vogue, and to that aim...it hit the mark. That being said, don't buy into the concept of "guilty pleasures"...there's no such thing. F'ing hell...great music, a whimsical story, and Gene Kelly. Good enough for me...no guilt.

The dancing way back then was so fluidic and natural. I kinda miss those days.

I saw Xanadu 5 nights in a row at the movies when it came out then brought the Album and almost wore it out... LOVE LOVE LOVE it... Every song is great...

Seeing as how this movie was filmed in 1978/9...this was "80s" before the 80s even happened.

This may not have been a great movie, but the music was excellent, especially this number! And it just makes me miss Olivia Newton-John even more.

Hands down the best scene in any movie musical! It is so invigorating! What a genius mash-up of styles!

This has to be the best progression in musical history: I always loved the Andrew Sisters and of course music from the 80's All I am going to say is this: John Farrar (who wrote this), the choregrapher and director.............JOB WELL DONE. Perfection! All these years later, 2 worlds coming together ..........flawlessy.

That's "jiggle," and you are correct! Darcel was a pioneer in many ways. The redhead is awesome indeed, and I've always wondered who the pony-tailed pixie in the pink catsuit is. The Cyd Charisse-looking lady in the striped top does a remarkable job as well.

I was there while that was being filmed (assistant director) and I can tell you, in real life, it was one of the most exciting things I've ever seen :) Glad it comes off on screen as well!

I like the mesh between the era's. Well arranged!

Still gives me goosebumps and the first time I saw it was in 1981. The merging was amazing!

Xanadu was doing mashups before it was cool.

I watch this scene only once 30 years ago and never forgot it, so I decided to wach it again thinking that I would realize that I liked it cos I was young and "cheezy" for lack of better word...well I was wrong , I still think its one of the coolest musical scene ever...it cheered me up so much that I gotta watch it one more time.

One of my favorite scenes in the movie. Have not watched this in a long time. Imagine how many rehearsals were needed, how many takes-- amazing. Also, the soundtrack version of this song (well, both tunes if we're being realistic) is a bit different; I prefer the audio here because there are added "goodies" and it's a bit longer. I saw this film when it came out in 1980 when I was 14. It was almost overwhelming. So much creativity, talent, color, energy, and music. And in this sequence, that whole concept of the two genres/periods eventually coming together and intertwining, that was genius. Love it!

when the two decades finally merge together, I actually get teary eyed! It is so cool...

Great mergence of two great eras

I remember watching this as a kid and thinking it was an awesome scene... I didn't realize it at the time, but it was the fusion of the two genres of music that made it incredible. As much as I hate to think it, it's the equivalent of what one would think of modern music, merged with some from the 80s today. Damn, I'm getting old...

Gotta love the internet for rarities like this one. A truly underated film, released at a time when movie musicals had fallen out of favor. I remember sitting in the move theater watching this scene astounded at how well the music styles were meshed together. I still feel that way today. Props to John Farrar, the singer-songwriter-producer, who allmusic.com credits with this song along with the rest of the A-side of the Xanadu soundtrack LP.

I AM IN LOVE with this! First saw it on HBO when I was 11!!! Xanadu goes along with rainbows and unicorns and glitter in my world. Still a fan!!

At the time 1980 I was 15 and yeah I was fascinated but today as I revisit, I'm actually amazed at just how well done this musical actually was. They considered this movie a flop, but I can tell you it was NO FLOP, it was actually Genius! I would loveee to see them remake this movie with 1980 as the old style and 2022ish as the modern. I wonder who could play Kira and Sonny.

Except, for the first time out of the many times I've seen this scene, I just noticed that the back row of the 40's band got blocked out by the Tubes wall of speakers! And all this time I thought what a great job they did mixing the two stages together.

jmil2tx - I totally agree with you. I thought this was a brilliant mix of two different styles of music. It used to piss me off when I would read that critics thought this part of the film was awfully horrific and painful to watch. They just don't have Magic I guess.

You are completely right! This is an amazing mix of two styles, critics need to shut their mouths.

I can rememeber this film when I was a kid, this was so famous and popular in Mexico, but unfortunately I never had the chance to watch it. I'm almost 50 and I could rent it in YT, I totally enjoyed it! This scene means the real beginning of the 80's.

The one thing I love about this is that, even though this (clip alone) was filmed in the 80's it's something we can all identify with and love because of the fusion of two totally different eras becoming one. It's just genius! :-D

I gotta say, even though my school used this song in their dancing production and I heard it a million times while I was teching, It STILL gives me shivers. I absolutely adore this song and I have no idea why it was never too popular.

You know that this was the best part of the film, musically. I am still wowed by the meshing of the two era's and how well it was coordinated. Well done!

I never get tired of watching this video (of course I have the movie) It's so wonderful to see the merge of the two different styles and become just one medley. Those 35 down critics really don't know how to appreciate music

I thought this movie was totally silly. HOWEVER, this scene is amazing. The way the music works together, the dancing. So well done. I come on now and then just to see this whole scene.

This scene made me cry due to it's genius approximately the 1st twenty-seven times i observed it, and the very first time when Gene Kelly exclaims, "I love it!!" I could help shouting, "ME TOO!" That trio hurts my heart, I want to be them.

I grew up with both genres of music, so when I saw this movie as a kid I immediately fell in love with it. I love how it all comes together in the end. And the trio from the bandstand remind me of The Andrews Sisters, who I listened to a lot growing up because we're huge Abbott & Costello fans and they made frequent appearances in their movies.

plus that dancer being 'tied' down with a cable to the board....I always remembered her as the head dancer from Solid Gold ;^)

1980 & 81 were just their own thing. Not still the 70s, but not yet quite the 80s everyone thinks of, and those years were brilliant!

I just watched this movie for the first time and this number was one of the best I’ve seen in any musical ever! The 2020’s are now as far removed from the 1980’s as the 80’s were the ‘40s when Xanadu was made. Wouldn’t it be neat if someone remade this number using the 80s glam band here and a dance music DJ set, rappers and hip hop dancers from today 😂

I saw this movie a few times a couple years ago and it's all I've wanted to watch since. I need to get it. If I had kids I'd sit them down and make them watch it everyday until they understood what good music sounds like!

I read about the sliding stages. They were constructed basically as 'fingers' that slid between each other, and it took lots of rehearsal to get it right and not have anybody fall off. Brilliant scene on many levels! I really love how the two songs sound so different in composition and general melody, yet blend so well- and the looks of discovery on the dancers' faces when each side looks over at the other is priceless!

Damn I love this! The amazing choreography the way this song mashes up so well without sounding like a bunch of noise. It's just so magical.

wthis at the movies, I wished I could have jumped into the screen and danced with the cast.

It’s the scene I remember the most. Great mix, perfectly in time. Saw Xanadu in 1980 at a German cinema. Roll back the time 😊.

goddd, this was probably my favorite part of the wholeee movie. even with two different eras and style of dance and music, the dancing and music just fit together so fuckin' well. wieh0f9whn309o.

Heck, I still have the Xanadu soundtrack on cassette tape somewhere :) Saw the movie in my mid teens, and I have to agree with a lot of people when they say that this was the best scene. I had goose bumps when I first saw it.
