Not just organic, this seems brilliantly thought out and respectful to established lore. Shadowlands drunkenly walked all over established Warcraft lore, and mischaracterized legacy characters with a plot that left lasting damage to the franchise.

Two months really late, but there's another connection here: ever since its introduction in BC, Escape from Durnholde (Old Hillsbrad), has a scene where you visit the tavern and find Paladins holy shocking a void crystal to infuse it with Light.

No one has patience like a WOW villain. How many eons did the Jailer wait? How many of thousands of years did Xalatath plot? These people must really hate us.... Blizzard finally impressed me with this. Well done on bringing this all together. To connect SOD with retail like this while adding to the lore was a pro move.

just remember that SoD is technically a throw away system, in the long-run it's not a new version of wow, it's a seasonal server that will come to an end, no doubt that things layed out in SoD will be in worldsoul saga at some point.​@@joncarter3761

Xalatath is becoming into what Jailer was meant to be and I love it

I love that they "throw" some info and lore before the actual expansion comes. However all thanks to Bellular for telling and covering it for us. I can imagine I would never know of this to that size or wouldn't comprehent it so complexly as Bellular summarized it. However I'm filled with positivity towards new chapters of World of Warcraft because I've been frustrated by one expansion villain/characters and then all of that being thrown out with next expansion coming. I can't wait for some massive story building, complexity and more lasting "new" characters

I guess they need to put new stuff in SoD but I’m personally not a fan of spreading main timeline lore across yet another medium other than the main game

Her plan was to turn up in SoD to watch everyones' ping explode on release day when trying to connect to the servers

SoD has been absolutely brilliant so far. I’m so glad Metzen is back and steering the ship the right way

I'm really glad they're not doing an alternate timeline, and while I was worried about them adding 'exclusive' lore to classic, if it's just snapshots that can be 100% summarised in a short article or video instead of a full on dungeon on raid experience, I'm pretty happy with that compromise.

You forgot a detail about the Arathi's vision. It happened to *some* of them, *after* they had already sailed across the sea to (presumably) Avaloren. Another detail about the crystal: it is likely a "shard of Light" flung out from the early days of the cosmos, in the Light v. Void conflict. Chronicles describes this event.

Paladins from both factions? There were no horde paladins then.

The horde NPC who tells players where the shard is, is a Tauren in mail gear with devotion aura as a buff.

Back a couple weeks ago, when I was doing the quest for my Spriest, I noticed that the shadowy figure was too shadow to not be related, and man, thanks bellular for the confirmation that I was not crazy

Xal'atath was pulling the strings all along she was behind the Jailer!!! Bravo Dunguser!!!

Bet there's gonna be a new in-game in SoD if you bring The Ashbringer to that light shard in the future.

I really prefer wow's lore before the planet was trying to be a person.

Them shoving in new lore into the older versions of the game is what they wish they could've done with The Jailer, if only WC3 refunded didn't fail. Here is to hoping they deliver a better retcon with Xalatath

the arathi we will meet in hallowfall do indeed originate from the pre-splintered arathi kingdom, but these arathi are also from across the sea, where a group of them went to create a new kingdom. the arathi we will meet left to cross back over the sea in search of the crystal(via anne stickney in an interview with wowhead). this new batch of arathi sounds really intriguing, to be honest. anyway, i enjoy these bits of lore crossover. for anyone playing sod, it's like a wink and a nudge if they happen to play retail as well.

All of this is really neat and all, but I'm just so proud of you for saying Arathi instead of Air-a-thigh.

will be interesting to see, if retail players get a chance to see this lore or if this is like the books. read them or don´t get the full picture. personally i really dislike cross-platform storytelling. be we will see how far they will go with this.

The Light Crystal seems like a Giant Naru

What happened to the Remnant of the Void? In the Emerald Nightmare after killing Xavius there is a cave where a Remnant of the Void is growing. Now we are back in the Emerald Dream and there is a new world tree, could it be void corrupted?

So Season of Discovery is basically the Archeology revamp with quite a lot extra steps. Got it.

Yeah I'm not a huge fan I sorta view it like I view putting important lore details in the novels and just assuming the player of retail is also consuming that content, not everyone has time to play classic which is much larger time investment then leveling in retail due to the removal(and its for the experience I understand that) of all the QoL and adjustments that have been made over the years. I guess I always have youtubers to summarize this stuff for me but its not the same as experiencing it yourself.

Great Old Ones - Old Gods Outer Gods - Void Lords Nyarlathotep - Xal'atath

I don't know if you've said it previously, but there seems to be an obvious parallel between Light and Void in the way they spread across the cosmos. We were lead to believe that it was only Void that shot what appear to be parasites to hatch into planets and take over. Such a Zerg way or Halo Flood way of spreading influence. Makes you think of bug monsters or horrible alien mutants - obviously evil things. But then we learn that the Light basically spreads the same. It shoots parts of Naaru (or whatever it is) across the cosmos to cause religious revelations in the native creatures that cause them to worship it, thus the Light's influence is spread.

Just remember, whatever happens… the jailer planned it 😂

I didn't actually expect to discover anything in season of discovery. I'm honestly floored and excited about this.

Damn this is cool. Such a great move by Blizzard. And also,I kinda like that we get to find out more from yotube creators. It makes the community more rich in a way + at the same time,content creators benefit from it,while at the same time making the story even more interesting with their presentation skills.

Death knight should had been a Paladin spec, I’m glad they’re adding in DK abilities to pally in SOD

What if Xal’atath’s old form was in the cavern that is the new war within zone and the light crystal was a weapon sent by the Naaru to kill Xal’atath’s form. And then the reason that the light crystal turns into a void crystal at night was by absorbing the void power from Xal’atath unintentionally?

I doubt its anything of important, but I just happen to realize Xalataths' eyes really resemble Elune's Eclipsed moon. Just a weird resemblance but I don't think they could be connected in any way right?

I hope during Midnight they expand or at least sort out the Naaru. They're pure light, the purest example of the Light side of the cosmic chart. Yet they can fall into void. A Dark Naaru & then after that become a "Void God". Xal refers to them as brethren what's that all about? Is she really just that different in the way she sees things? Or is there more to it?

For a while at least. I don't think it's that Horde Vs Alliance doesn't work anymore, it's just that if it comes in the middle of a wider arc it feels like a filler conflict. So if they were gonna do it again they'd have to really work at making it the core of the experience

I mean, lore-wise it simply doesn’t make sense at this point. I would find it very odd if a group consisting of Thrall, Baine, Calia, Lor’themar, Thalyssra etc etc would pursue war with the Alliance ever again. The last two times ended with the Alliance at Orgrimmar’s gates. If anything, I could have seen the Alliance turning into the aggressors - a zealous Tyralyon, a vengeful Tyrande, a hateful Genn. But with Anduin returning, Metzen talking about “uniting the elven tribes” in Midnight and Genn getting his home back, that storyline doesn’t really work either. So short answer: yeah, no, it’ll be Azeroth united until the World Soul saga ends, and possibly beyond that. Most of the potential threads leading to war have been resolved at this point.

@@Kevster921 I can see a Light's Dogma arc with Alliance as the aggressors once we deal with the Void. Feels like the next obvious 'cosmic big bad' and that one could have a faction conflict in it. And Anduin's back but I dunno if he sees himself as fit for the crown yet so Turalyon might be staying where he is

@@GorehowlBeardhead There are enough forces in the Alliance that are not aligned with The Light (Night Elves, Gnomes, Worgen), as such I don't see the Alliance as a faction being the aggressor in such a conflict. WoW was driven be faction conflict and ran with it for a long time, using previous lore as a basis for this. Nowadays you don't really want to split up your playerbase just because they want to play as a certain race. This is why you see cross-faction guilds, raids, etc being implemented. With the Warbands feature, I assume your characters will basically be their own sort of mini-faction composed of members of both the Alliance and the Horde (much like, for example, the Dragonscale Expedition). When it comes to faction leaders that still might hate each other right now, that would probably just be Jaina hating Lor'themar for the shit the Sunreavers pulled during MoP. Sure the Night Elves were snobs when it came to the Nightborne, but I don't think there's actual hate there.

If Paladins get howling blast and are enabled to become DKs, I think that would be rad. but; we're walking lines of turtle wow. Give me priest monks, rogue DHs, tauren paladins and dwarf shamans if we're going to begin that direction. >>>Enabling a dwarf hunter to tame the elements and become a shaman/ enabling a tauren warrior to follow the sun and become a pally, potentially.

I get the feeling the big picture of this narrative is set up for a perspective swap on who we consider good/evil. Say the titans have been tampering with Azeroth to keep her from awakening. Sargeras can still be bad, just that the other titans are also just as bad guyish as the legion

I wouldn't say they'll make them bad, but rather give context to what purpose the Titans fulfil in the universe. Past lore just states that they cleansed the world of the corruption of the Old Gods, stabilised Azeroth's wound (that they did cause, but w/e), shaped the forests, seas and mountains and produced beings to keep watch over the world. We never really asked why they do these things, but with knowledge outside the in-game lore they are aligned with the force of Order and opposed to Chaos, and that Azeroth is a World Soul, we can imagine that they did what they did in order to nurture Azeroth and turn the World Soul towards Order. Not out of maleficence, but simply because that's the role they have taken in the universe to fulfil of an as-yet-unknown greater purpose (or maybe simply they just want more of themselves in the universe). Though on the topic of swapping perspectives (or preconceived notions) on good/evil, my headcanon is that Light and Void are two sides of a dichotomy of truth and lies, where Light shows and speaks of prophecies that are The Convenient Lie (things will be good and you will be happy if you do these things that align with us) whereas the Void shows visions that are The Inconvenient Truth (things will be bad and you will suffer if you do things that don't align with us, and you will be driven to madness if you resist). I feel it would be interesting to explore something that drives the Void narratives away from "void is bad and evil" to "you've only had bad experiences with the void because you keep resisting and working against us". Alleria could be the key to exploring that side of the story, if the writers choose to go there.

That's just poor storywriting. At least grey area introduces conflict, tension and resolution and can tie in to the motivation of other characters.

she was trapped in the black blade until battle for azeroth yes, but she had also been trapped for thousands of years so i do wonder how she has manifested before that

The fact that majority of Death Knights were paladins doesn't explain how can Paladins use Death Knight spells. Because the chronology is reversed. It's Paladins using Death Knight spells (from their future life), not Death Knights using Paladin spells from their previous life. Also, as of today, no Death Knight went back to being a Paladin as far as I know. The closest is the one of the Four Horsemen who was a Death Knight using Light spells, but he didn't really turn back to being a Paladin, he just never stopped being one somehow.

So does Xal corrupt that light shard?

How is this possible when khaz'algar is in the south of azeroth and that shard in the north. Maybe it's another one.

I just wish they could actually put all the lore we "need" in retail so every player can learn of these things without reading every book, or playing every other blizzard wow related game there is.The one thing that really annoys the shit out of me is the fact that there is so much lore found outside of the game, things that are really important to understand the connected history of azeroth.

so the idea of Xal atath being a fifth old god does seem plausible only untill you realize they have stated in game that xal atath is actually not an old god but something much older. my theory is that xal atath is actually linked to the void where as the old gods are just corrupted forms of nature created by azeroth as a means to defend herself from the other cosmic forces only the black empire falls to the cosmic force of order and due to how the titans think they saw the old gods as corruption and locked them away as even odin states that nothing can be created unless its been ordered

Isn't it confirmed that the Old Gods are basically just parasites flung into the universe by the Void to weaken/corrupt potential World Souls though? Then again, trusting anything the Titans say seems foolish at this point as well.

they did it

based on the story aspects of SoD that have changed from the classic version, I think they are setting things up as SoD is actually an alternative timeline. Meanwhile they are testing future features for retail on a live environment beta group. I would not doubt if things from SoD become core features in midnight. (including storylines layed out in SoD)
