X32 Play Your Break Music Playback From USB - How To Encode 48K Music Files For Proper Playback.

Tech Tip: How to play band break music stored on USB memory using the Behringer X32 mixer. I describe how to format your music files so they are readable, and properly sorted by the X32.
This allows full control while using a wireless connection to your mixer.
You can play your break bumper music directly with the mixer. No need to use an external music player (ipod/phone etc). Less hardware, and more control.
This allows you full wireless remote control over your bumper music. You can start/stop or change songs remotely without walking up to the mixer.
Note - Limit your groups of songs to 40 or less. If you have greater than about 40 songs on your USB memory (or within a subfolder) the song listing on the remote PC app appears blank. You can navigate subfolders containing songs on your USB memory with the remote PC app, or from the X32 console.

Quite far removed from my usual choice of work, mixing punk or metal bands. Anyways, thanks.

Thanks for the tip. I converted my MP3 files via my DAW (Studio One Pro), to 48k 24 bit wav files. However, though I can view the list of all wav files on the X32, I can't play them. When I press play, it quickly starts then stops. I tried selecting every file in the list and get the same response. There is no error message. I'm running firmware 4.06, the latest as of this date.

I think I'd try 48k @ 16bit. (Assuming your X32 is running at 48k). Also, the wav file must not have any metadata header, so not all software will create compatible wav files.

Hi Barry. Thanks for this great video. I probably skipped watching it. I have a question which might help us all if you can answer....If I put a USB with the correct version of some Wav files in the X32 USB slot and set X32 to DAW Mode, can I use the X32 Console as a Surface Controller? My point here is to use X32 as a virtual board and do the live mixing of the Wav tracks from the USB using the sliders, effects, monitor mixing of X32 and route the sound to mains and monitors.

I don't think so. With the usb memory stick, you can record or play back stereo files. But you don't have access to all of the individual channels on the board. The X-live expansion card option does however allow you to do recording and playback of all of the individual channels on the board so that might get you closer to what you're looking for. amzn.to/3VLs8dD

I would often connect the X32 to a PC using the USB interface on the back of the unit, and send all of the live tracks to Reaper software on the PC and record the show (all tracks) on the computer. Then, afterwards, I would mix down all of the tracks on the computer using Reaper, and it's effects on the computer. Of course, you can use any DAW software, I used Reaper because it's inexpensive and fully featured. For playback, and mixing, I just used the computer and its normal interface. I didn't re-route the tracks back to the X 32, although I suppose you could. This works well, no additional software or anything is required (except for the X32 driver software on the computer), the X32 looks like a PC sound card and all of the channels are available. I think the X32 X-live expansion card would be a better recording solution, just because it's simpler and you don't need to drag along a computer with you and have any concerns about computer glitches while recording the show.

It was no problem converting bumper music to play back from the USB on the X32 Rack. Problem is, from the X32 Rack, It will only play one track at a time, I cannot find a continuous play feature so that it plays all tracks. Also from the tablet, I can only see the first track only. I have looked everywhere other than customer service for a tutorial. My firmware is at 4.06. Any help with this would be much apricated. Thanks in advance.

I figured it out - Page 63 of the X32 Manual: 7. Tap the 6th encoder to toggle the “playback folder” mode on/off. • When playback folder mode is OFF, the transport will stop after playing the currently selected audio file. This is useful for situations like triggering audio cues or sound effects in a theatrical setting. • When playback folder mode is ON, the transport will continue playing back all audio files residing in the currently selected folder one by one. This is useful for playing back several songs during a break in the main set, allowing the attached USB drive to act as a source for “break music”.

Hi! Thanks for this. However, I am experiencing a problem. I can convert the file from mp3 to wav just fine. But when I try the way you suggest (-i title of song.mp3 -ar 48000 00 -title of song.wav it is not recognized. What could I be doing wrong? And, if I convert w/o the "ar 48000 00, can I still play it from the Behringer X32?

  • @Barry-Watson

    @Barry-Watson

    2 жыл бұрын

I think what you may be doing is putting a space between the 00 and the title. I'm suggesting you start your titles with a number just to assure the songs are sorted on the X32 by number in your playlist in the order you want. So, I think it should be 01-Title.wav 02-SongTitle.wav 03-SongTitle.wav etc. The number is part of the title. The -ar 48000 forces the song to be encoded at the same sample rate as your X32 is running in - look under X32 setup menu for 48k (default) or 44.1k... if your unit is set to 44.1 k, use the value 44100. If this value is incorrect, the music won't play back at the correct speed/pitch. Best wishes!

Some applications make wav files with a data record at the beginning containing metadata (track title etc). If it's not a "pure music only" wav file, the X32 can have trouble reading it.

I am running a Midas M32C version 4.06 firmware. I see the same behavior. The recorder in the iPad app is stuck on one song. I can't go to the previous or next. It does play that song. When I connect a computer running M32Mix, it shows all the tracks. If I select one, then the iPad app starts working properly... It kind of defeats the benefit in my case as I was hoping to not have to hook up something else to run background music. I don't usually hook up a computer.

  • @Barry-Watson

No, the file needs to be .wav format, without header data, at the same sample rate as the mixer is set. You can pretty easily convert your .mp3 files to the bare .wav format needed. In the video I show how this can be done with FFMPEG.

Check the mixer setup page. You can select 44.1 or 48k. Really doesn't make a huge difference for live sound. Video productions (if you're going to be exporting digital audio for a video track) typically use audio sampled at 48k. Whatever setting you choose, use the same sample rate for the audio you want to play back... otherwise it will play slightly off-speed.
