Pete, you hit the nail on the head. I have an X-T3 and bought an X-T5. The mode dial and Exposure compensation dial felt a little less robust than the X-T3. The other dials were fine but the dials themselves didn't feel quite as strong. I was Ok with all of this but I returned the X-T5. I noticed fuzziness on the edges of subjects using auto or manual focus. Because I still had my X-T3 I started shooting from a tripod, exact same settings and just switching the bodies. X-T3 was cleaner. Sent images of both to the store and they said to return the 5. Still want one but have decided to wait a while. This video was very helpful👍

I have the xt3 and got the xt5 and enjoying the xt5 but I got the extra adaptive grip and find it very helpful in controlling the camera. I have the silver which has the classic look. Also I use my xt5 for bird photography and the bird focus mode is a real plus in my opinion, I enjoy your videos .

If I wanted a heavier body like the XH2 I would have gotten a Sony or Canon. But I didn't. I went with the XT5 for it's size, weight and classic design. I own both the xh2 and xt5 and would rather keep the xt5 since I mainly do stills. Performance feels the same and image quality is the same without the added bulk.

so interesting article. I came to the xt5 from xt200-xt30-xs10.... so for me the build is great. I have added a grip as I use my xt5 with my 70-300mm plus 1.4×tc, for wildlife, and it's great for that vs. the 3 I have mentioned. Tomorrow I will be using it with my viltrox lenses to shoot an opera rehearsal, and I'm sure it will be fab for that, as my xt30 and xs10 have done a good job in the past. Can't wait to see what the xt5 produces with my 85 and 56mm lenses.

I noticed when upgrading to my Xt3 that is is FAR cheaper made than my old XT2 which was built super solid, felt as if it had a nicer finish on it, and the buttons even felt more responsive physically. Evet X body after the Xt2 generation has felt cheaper. Insides are great but hasn't felt the same.

Thanks Pete for the video I bought the XT5 after switching from the XS 10 as my son wanted to camera and I felt like I wanted to upgrade after just entering the Fuji system. I really love the t5.... I have been taking my camera out into the landscape area and in quite challenging conditions at times and I have to say the build quality is really good. I haven't ever dropped my camera thankfully, and I'm very careful but in terms of being knocked about and just looking at the build quality is really good. Since switching into the Fuji system are use the control setting to change my aperture anyway, so it goes back to using the front dial so I don't have to adjust that and I can lock that one delete compensation. I'm always checking anyway so if it does happen to move because it's been in my bag or whatever I don't have a problem with just clicking it back to the spot where it is. It's not a big issue I suppose for someone maybe he's shooting portrait he is using the same setting over and over that might be a bit of a concern, but I can. I think you would always check it anyway and a quick glance and that so I suppose the beauty of Fuji film is you can actually see it on top of the camera anyway, so you're always kind of looking at it. It is hard for me to comment on the upgrade, but looking at the XS 10 which is very similar to the XT4. I would say it's definitely worth the upgrade. This camera can do things that the xs- 10 couldn't which is equivalent to a T4

Hey Nev! I agree - the build quality is excellent and I don't find the dials to be an issue at all. Overall I think the camera is a huge home run, but there will always be little things here and there that people will not like with any camera.

The build quality of XT5 is definitely below par. Just wish you had called it out as cheaply built rather than differently built! I have XT2 and XT5 and can very well see the difference. I’m guessing Fuji’s motivation was to produce a camera that delivers better images at a higher profit margin to them because they knew this was going to be a winner. That said, they have the Fuji-loyal who have an expectation for quality and they’ve been let down. It’s a good way to lose your best customers and reducing the number of customers converting from other brands.

  • @PeteCocoPhoto

I understand the sentiment. I thought part of their motive was to position the XH2 series as the camera for serious pros and the XT5 as more for street/portrait and light use photogs. I use the XT5 basically every day and it's been very good for me so I can't complain personally.

Im not a typical fuji user becasue i jump on this system from Pentax, and i pick X-H1 because of its stronger and heavier body than X-T3. And i usualy shoot with grip or L-bracket due my big hands. Form factor arent reason why i go mirrorless i just wanted to have ability to use more variety of vintage lenses. :D I know that my next camera body (if it will be Fuji) it will be probably GFX 50R or some brick like that :d And like You see my photos from recent event, i really need that HD construction od X-H1, when i shooting offroad adventures or sail across Baltic Sea :D But i totally agree with advantages of X-T5, for events like weddings, traveling via plane etc... lighter body is way to go!

But the x-t4 was already a step back in terms of build quality compared the x-t3, so the difference should be less marked. Coming from an x-t3 and x100v, the difference was stark to the x-t5. I got to use the x-t5 in store a few weeks before release and was burnt at the stake over at fujirumors for suggesting build quality had taken a hit. The top dials compared to the x-t3 are indeed the main thing. The exposure comp feels a bit well like Lego when turned! But also the top plate in general. It lacks that cold metallic feeling and it's not surprising if the changed the materials to save weight. But also the paint feels somehow cheaper and the port doors feel cheap as hell. The fact that these issues do not present themselves on the x-h2 I could play with side by side do suggest a deliberate distinction is being made with build quality. The build quality didn't put me off buying oney though, in the same wa the screen of the x-t4 put me off that one. It did signal to me the camera was significantly overpriced, though. I waited for a couple of weeks after release to get one 10% reduced, but still felt I overpayed. However, perceived quality is not always a good indicator of actual quality. I knocked my x-t5 off a railing 1m above the ground. It went through the brown snow layer and hit the rocks below it. After rinsing off the dirt all I could find was the smallest of nicks to the black paint. Maybe I got lucky, but that won me over. The oversized plasticky comp dial with oversized markings compared to everything else still bugs me, though.

  • @PeteCocoPhoto

Yes, the exposure dial is my least favorite part too. But you are so right when saying "perceived quality is not always a good indicator of actual quality." I've had a few bumps and bruises with my XT5 too and so far it's been very rugged.
