    All of these G100 videos all go into great detail, on a great longass list of feature/functions, but not one that I can find shows how to simply use the flight director to set a heading/alt and have the autopilot follow your input.

    Use the heading knob to set a heading, then press the AP button to activate the auto pilot and the HDG button to turn on heading mode. Your airplane should turn in the set direction and follow it. Then press the ALT button to keep your airplane at the current altitude, set a new altitude with the altitude knob, press the VS button to activate vertical speed mode, and lastly press the nose up or nose down button a couple of times to ascend or descent. Your plane will climb or descent to the set altitude and auto disengage VS mode at the set altitude. Note that you are in charge of the throttle at all times - the G1000 has no auto throttle capabilities. So for all horizontal maneuvers make sure to adjust your throttle setting.

    No offense, but... Starting at 56:24 Phillip talks about VR a bit, and as an instructor I have to agree. I have tried to make VR work for instrument training and it is a bit frustrating. I find there are too many "twisting" misfires. Buttons and switches work fine, but at this point twisting freq and twisting thru the alphabet, so to speak, with controllers is a pain. If you are serious RW pilot and desire IFR skills I would take a look at the Air Manager touchscreen/knobster concept. In combination with Pilotedge ATC. Not affiliated. Good Luck.

    It's packed full of features. Takes time to learn properly. And that's after you've learned to VFR fly your plane first. Took me almost 2 years to learn the Garmin 1000 and RNAV and all that, once I did, oh yeah baby! The beauty of it is, if you just want to let the GPS fly you direct, you can do that very easily, or load up some flight plans and let it fly you there in more style. Later you can learn ILS and RNAV approaches and such.

What I saw here is "Heaven of G1000" in simulation. Thanks a lot for this! Though questions: Is the color of the aircraft in the map changeable? This magenta is not clear to see. G1000 Trainer has it white. In the FPL the active leg is just a magenta arrow. I know of the magenta connection from WP to the active WP. Is this new in Garmin? Otherwise I enjoy very much all your videos. Learning a lot!!!! Peter

There is a free addon that adds a few tweeks to SF50 and calms down flap ballooning for sure. If you are serious pilot I recommend Aerobask phenom 300 with G1000. If anyone comes across this post regarding a problem with the cursor, I can tell you what I've found out:... A lot of people, through numerous forums, all say the problem with the cursor is because of the correct version not being out yet. That may have been the case at one point, but not anymore. After going through so much trial-and-error testing, I found that the cursor has no problem designating altitudes in VNAV.... *Unless you are in the "Approach" mode.* After loading my flight plan, I select the approach I want and enter it. Then I bring up the flight plan in order to "designate" my altitudes for the ILS....and like I said before, I have no problem with altitudes that are NOT in the Approach field. But when I move my cursor to highlight and designate the altitudes in "approach," the cursor just moves down the left side, going past all the altitudes. If this is not a bug, then why would the programmers update it this way? That would be one of the dumbest moves I've ever seen regarding updates for games. And just in case some people think I'm lying, then watch this.....> www.dropbox.com/s/e7j9vurr3bjsof1/X-plane.mp4?dl=0

    That makes no sense, trying to fly RNAV+VNAV, to suddenly drop to ILS don't you think? Or what's the reason behind? I see many people had no idea and combining those two approaches for no reason, yes i am aware of WAAS/GPS/LPV/V lateral guidance into ILS, if you dont have ATC its great. APP/R mode is just for capturing glideslope of an active ILS - you cannot designate your ILS glideslope as far as i know.

    @@ivobrick7401 Actually, I've been doing a lot of reading. This might be of some use to others. In the actual manual, after reading and reading, I came across this statement, *"Altitude constraint values associated with the Final Approach Fix (FAF) and waypoints beyond the FAF cannot be designated for vertical guidance. These altitude values are always displayed as white text, as in Figure 5-129. Vertical guidance from the FAF and on to the Missed Approach Point (MAP) is given using the SBAS GPS altitude source, therefore, the displayed altitude values are for reference only."* So looks like it is not possible.

  • @jyrki4167
    @jyrki41676 жыл бұрын

    Philipp, for some reason I fail to enter the VNAV glidepath most of the time. The situation in my cockpit (am also using the Cirrus Visionjet) is exactly as seen 20:14 in your video. VNAV is armed, all the indicators are exactly as in your video, descent path is calculated. When the VNAV timer reaches zero - the plane just doesn't want to descent. Errors in VNAV code, or on my part? VNAV helps in this situation still, as I just then choose my vertical speed the same as VNAV calculated. But this is a bit irritating still.

  • @jyrki4167

    @jyrki4167

    6 жыл бұрын

    And yes, my altitude is set to lower than the current one, so that's not the reason. I actually don't get the "of course you have to twist the altidute knob to really descent" in your video, but tried also that, didn't help. My autopilot indicators remain "ALT 20000ft VPTH", and the plane doesn't descend.

  • @XPlanePhil

    @XPlanePhil

    You are probably hitting the timeout. The g1000 has a timeout on vnav engagement that prevents cases where the pilot armed the vnv minutes ago and might have forgotten about it, only to be surprised by an unexpected descend. I don't remember the actual time in seconds, but you can look it up in a real Garmin manual.

    Philipp - I am having difficulty with the VNAV. When I enter in a target altitude in the flight plan, the autopilot does not descend at the rate that I specify in the Current VNAV profile. For instance, if I am at 10000 and I need to get to 8000, and I specify a FPA of -3.5 or about -1000 FPM, the autopilot does not descend at that rate. It will descend, but it will not ever match the rate that I specified. VPATH ALTV is armed, and the correct magenta terget altitude is displayed, but the VS will never descend at the rate I specified. The magenta chevron is on -1000 FPS, but my autopilot is doing anywhere from -350 to -700 FPS. So I will miss a lot of target altitudes on STAR flight paths, for instance.

    Hi, thanks for the clear video! I have a question though: at 20:05 you say “of course you have to twist the Altitude button to start the descent” Why is this ‘of course’? Why does the AP not start descending when the VNAV is activated?

  • @XPlanePhil

    @XPlanePhil

    2 жыл бұрын

    Vnav will only descent to the selected altitude (obeying restrictions on the way) but never below. This is so you never descent below your atc cleared altitude. Atc will clear you to descent to an altitude, you set that as the limit with the altitude bug. The autopilot will descent along the computed path, it will never cross the boundary you set to comply with atc. That’s why you need to set the altitude bug to tell the system how far atc has cleared you.

  • @XPlanePhil

    @XPlanePhil

    3 жыл бұрын

    For a VOR approach, you have to decide whether to fly it green needles (VOR) or magenta (GPS overlay). Under EASA rules, only green needles are allowed, so you will not get a glidepath from the GPS. Under FAA rules, you can substitute the GPS to make it essentially a GPS overlay approach. In this case, you stay with the magenta needle and you will get a LNAV+V advisory glidepath. This glidepath is there to help you make a smooth descsent, but it does not guarantee obstacle clearance. It is advisory only, so you are still on the hook to make sure you comply with all crossing altitude restrictions. I have explained this in my video series about VOR approaches earlier this year: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mIuH2duyaLadqZM.html (green needles) kzread.info/dash/bejne/nJ2ouLxposKwerw.html (magenta)

    It really varies from person to person. No two students are created equal. Some people take to using the simulator easily, and there is real positive transfer of learning. I've met others who can fly real airplanes but struggle keeping the simulator right side up. With those I found using the sim as a pure panel trainer helps, so setting visibility to 0 and eliminating all non-instrument cues. There are a lot of things that can be done in the simulator much easier and safer than in the real plane. Especially training instrument failures. I have compiled a list of tasks, some of which are perfect for the simulator, others aren't. I've written about it here: forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/forums/topic/159237-ifr-student-looking-to-use-xplane11-to-supplement-training/&tab=comments#comment-1497237

    Same here. I do everything correctly. Duck the selected altitude. Make sure VNV is armed within 5 minutes. Designate the alt in FPL. Check for Magenta alt in pfd. Double check FPA and that the descent angle is less than 2000fpm, based on speed. Sometimes it fails to capture and I use V-Direct function softkey. It might have to do with a fresh load of Arrival. In other words, You can load a fresh flight plan, but I would only save the waypoints, Departure and dest, not the Arrival and sids, approaches etc. Not completely sure. Still an intermittent failure to capture. BTW should not have to twist ALT select button to capture.

    OK, this was very helpful, but can you please explain the bit at 20:12 or so, it speaks volumes about why I find GA planes so infuriating, you have the altitude set lower, you have hit the vnv button, and STILL you say you have to "jiggle" the altitude button or something?

    You need to be using X-Plane 11.20 for this - either opt in to the public beta or wait a little bit for the release candidate to be pushed to everybody.

    @Tom Lewis Of course this works. However, not all altitudes can be designated. Special rules apply in the approach portion of the flight plan. Please refer to the manual of the real world G1000 for more information, as X-Plane uses the same rules.

  • @XPlanePhil

    @XPlanePhil

    Within the approach portion, no matter if it's RNAV, ILS, or whatever, you cannot designate the final approach fix altitude or anything beyond, and anything beyond the initial approach fix is always auto-designated. That's exactly how it works on the real thing. Manual designation you usually only have to do in the enroute flight plan, especially in the STAR.

    As far as I know, Aerobask are using their own glass cockpit and have not equipped their planes with the X-Plane G1000, other than the Diamond DA62. So this is really a question you should ask them.

    It is now 2021 July. And yes Aerobask Phenom 300 uses X-1000 and adds it's own callouts and other nice features. The Phenom 300 is a great aircraft. Far superior to SF50, altho Sf50 works pretty good for demo in this video and it is free. Be sure to use free plugin fix for SF50. In P300 I can use all Stars and Sids with this single-pilot certified, Cat 1 RNP certified aircraft. The VLJ's like Vision Jet sometimes have problems with high speed restrictions at altitude on STARS. For example @250 KIAS at FL280 is a bit of a stretch for single turboprops and single engine jets. VLJ's.

  • @XPlanePhil

    @XPlanePhil

    You don't. I have yet to encounter an aircraft in real life that had the KR87 remote receiver for the G1000. You don't need it. The G1000 is TSO-C129a, so you can substitute the BRG pointer for ADF, as long as the station is in the database. Even for training we don't need it, ADF was removed from the PTS/ACS this year, so we don’t even teach it anymore.

  • @XPlanePhil

    @XPlanePhil

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@luisfelipeurbaneja7312 there is no vnav for climb, because the G1000 does not know the climb performance. If you designate an altitude and you get the triangle that means you are already above the designated altitude and you get the advise to descend to it. Vnav function is not used during climb or cruise with the real G1000

    im still working on getting my vision to do it. my next idea is that I was using an approach, not arrival even though the altitudes are still there. I cannot scroll to the white altitudes to turn them blue. but on the last 2 legs of the approach, it said LNAV+V, still was too high compared to the GPS glideslope.

  • @XPlanePhil

    @XPlanePhil

    5 жыл бұрын

    Approach VNAV is different - only the first altitude before the FAF is auto-designated. The rest is left to the approach vertical guidance, LNAV+V in your case or any of the higher accuracy guidances you get with WAAS. This I explained in the approach video or you can refer to the Pilots Guide or Cockpit Reference Guide of the real thing.
