I have been most honoured to be able to speak to this esteemed father (Master Ting Wan Kee) & son (Min Long) team of 星洲龍獅體育會 Singapore Dragon & Lion Athletic Association. Dragon dance is a tight knit family affair which involved three generations of his family in one way or another.
Master Ting and his son gave us an insight into the percussions and other instruments used by the dragon dance and how do they compare to the lion and qilin dances.
The percussions used form a unique identity for the dance as well as the troupe it represents. Due to their constant interaction with other troupes and by observing them during competitions, they could pick apart just from their percussion sounds, which troupe the performing team represents. As the percussions used for the dragon dance evolve with the times, they went from a small drum to a big drum, they even use large cymbals, similar to those used by the Qilin troupe as well!
Min Long then proceed to give us a breathtaking taste of the drumming that forms part of the dragon dance routine.
