One of the best lines in the entire show: "he's a big boy. You have to take care of the little boy.". Seriously. Best line

I think this situation is hard for Mulder and I always felt that the way his character was written when he returned was - not knowing where he fit in and doubting his position in Scully's life. Imagine being abducted and having such heavy trauma and then dying, being buried and returning back to life. A life that continued without you, with the world moving on, and you'll totally understand Mulder's sorta distance and awkwardness around Scully. Partly I think Doggett is an issue because he's taken Mulder's place from a professional perspective and the X-Files is Mulder's baby which he nurtured which makes mulder territorial. Then Scully is very very pregnant, and he wasn't there for the pregnancy, and then there's this nearly grown child suddenly right there in her belly. As well as the big elephant in the room? Is it his child. At this stage I think this is why they are both avoiding that issue, for fear that it isn't, and Scully is carrying an experiment or alien prophecy, and Scully can't sooth Mulder because she fears the same. So they dance around it but with hope that William is truly theirs, and that's why Mulder can't help playing the daddy because he wants the baby to be his and in the end William was theirs.

I think you're exactly right. He missed six months of his life, and then comes back to find everyone "moved" on. They were able to live without him, and in a way it probably hurts to know there aren't many people who missed him. It was his first question he asked when he woke up. In his personal life, he didn't know where he stood with Scully. They were on the verge of something when he was abducted, and then he comes back to discover her several months pregnant. It then lends itself to who is the father. Doggett was a huge issue to contend with because in many ways he was what Mulder wasn't. He followed the rules. For Scully, I think it was much the same way. She spent so much time wanting him back she never thought what it would be like for him to miss so much time. She never considered how awkward it would be between them because that tension never existed before. It's an all around sad situation because they never fully resolve it.

JMoonrise Well at least at the end of season 11 they are back together and they're gonna have a baby. What's sad it's the William part. I now GA it's not going to be in anymore X files possible series (and i would't want anymore chapters without any of them they're both necessary, when Mulder left on season 8 and 9 and was only apears for few cameos or couple of episodes I didn't like it) I hope they do a good movie where they lived together and they don't seperate Mulder & Scully and they can have a happy ending with William the new baby and Mulder-Scully, it doesn't matter if CSM is Williams "creator" he is not his father, Mulder is his father he felt like a father for him, they would make a beatiful family together... I APOLOGIZE FOR MY BAD ENGLISH, IT'S NOT MY NATIVE TONGUE.

Mulder is getting ready to be a dad! This is truly one of my all time favorite moments “You got to worry about the little boy. Or little girl. Boy? Or girl?” Translation: “Are you going to tell me if I’m gonna have a son or daughter?”

Aww, Mulder wanted to be the papa so badly 😭

Mulder was so good at calling scullys fears, he does it here and in the last movie while they are in bed.

I either make season 8 the final episode, and just imagine them happy or skip most of 9 and ignore the revival and just use iwtb as the last and use the after credits scene as them off being happy forever.

Honestly, I don't think it mattered how the baby came to be for Mulder. He surely wasn't going to leave this child fatherless and Scully to do this alone. He always knew deep down he would step up, even fearfully. Mulder was that kids' father as soon as he knew she was pregnant. He just wanted her to make it official, which she wordlessly did. Such pain when you know what becomes of baby William while Mulder is away again.

+MadelineTopper I really liked Dogget. I thought his introduction was a bit too forced, making him a more like a caricature than a believable character. Reyes, on the other hand, was terrible. The show clearly wanted to make her a more spiritual person to provide some contrast but sometimes it made her look stupid. The bottom line is that people love Mulder and Scully and people will hate anyone else stepping into their shoes. The show should have been put on a hiatus when Duchovny wanted to go do something else. Now, with a new mini series, they would rather bank on old Mulder and old Scully than new blood, because they realized no one could replace them.

I didn't particularly care for Agent Doggett or his partnership with Scully. But when Reyes came in and she was partnered with Doggett I'd have been quite happy watching a Season 10 with them had the show continued immediately after Season 9 ended in 2002. I think that Doggett was completely ill-suited for the X-Files division though. It was most definitely not his strength at all. Reyes on the other hand fitted the division perfectly. I liked having her on the show. I still maintain to this day that I wish that Scully had just disappeared along with Mulder and William between Seasons 8 and 9 and just allowed Doggett and Reyes to get on with it. Scully without Mulder and Mulder without Scully is just all types of wrong and it just seemed completely out of character for Mulder to leave. Very forced writing in my humble opinion.

@@yiany they really should have waited god I have a love hate realationship with season 8 and 9. They just forced it, the super soldiers (havent watched the season in a while) but they explained why they were "after" Scully, but Mulder it seemed like they just needed an excuse it was good but no real suport to it.

The ending is sooo cute when he says "You gotta worry about the little boy, or girl....boy? oooorrrrr girl....?" N'AWWWHHH eeek they're sooo cute :')

He is in self doubt, but he always hopes that this child is the crystallization of his love with Scully！

I am not yet technically up to this part of the series as I'm new to watching it. But damn, the writers seem to have real issues with just letting the characters be together. They seem for so long to make the characters hover in this weird area of "not just friends as they clearly love each other and have no personal boundaries or work-life separation" and also "not officially together or dating". Like, normally once two people try multiple times to have a kid together with IVF, are sleeping together, and have more-or-less been told or admitted they're soulmates a dozen times, you could say they are "together". You know, at least dating. Not these two! And while I get Mulder was abducted and missed most of the pregnancy so it's awkward, it's bizarre seeing this line still drawn. Like, c'mon guys! Mulder, you're supposed to be a genius. Do the maths! You were the only one banging her at the time! She brought you back from the dead! Scully, you're about to pop out a baby. No time for fluffing around anymore!

bsascially chris carter never really wanted them to be obviiously together together... which is why things are so "wonky". and i mean scenes like the dancing part in pmp were totally unscripted and just happened because of david and gillian (and somehow ended up being in the final cut).

@Sodium Chloride He believes in ghosts/spirits. He just doesn't believe everything they come across. Think of it like this: You are only seeing the interesting and fantastical cases that Mulder and Scully come across. You're not seeing the mundane, day to day, nothingburgers they USUALLY come across. Mulder has mentioned many times in the series the times he has investigated things and they turned out to be bogus.

Yup, I’ve just reached s9 and it’s frustrating because chris Carter waited until one cast member wanted to leave the show all together so their relationship had to be written around that. SO much potential and it was all lost just like that. Very frustrating.

It was all chris carter. He has a Madonna whore complex/ genuine obsession with scully and or gillian. Keeping her miserable and single but playing around with her reproductive organs seems to get him off. Its real gross.

Some of the episodes were from Duchovny him Self. These episodes that Duchovny written were brilliantly played out. I am glad he was able to do them.

No, you are spot on. Some of Mulder's jokes actually came from David - he often ad-libbed. David is very funny in real life. I have met him several times and he's very kind and funny. 💜

Chisenga Mulenga you need to watch S7 E17 "All things" wrote and directed by GA in this episode they slept together for the first time...and presumably after that either they did it more times or she got pregnant that first night.

+JoJo this is how you deal with Chris Carter. When he makes really stupid and idiotic decisions trying to retcon his own show, just simply delete the idiocy. So; Mulder's secret brain disease = deleted Mulder not being the father = not so much deleted as slightly changed, so it becomes CSM talking about being William's 'creator' in a scientific sense but they're still Mulder's swimmers and Scully going on an enforced jaunt in 'En Ami' with CSM and Scully also having the corrupted doctor in 'per manum' means there was access and her pregnancy was able to be manipulated. Mulder's still William's father and has been for close to 2 decades. The fucking kid even looks and acts like Mulder. From a narrative view Mulder was always William's dad. The writers planned it all as they said in the commentary. It was always the intention for Mulder to be the daddy but with teasing as much as possible. The subtle change in relationship with it turning sexual in season 7 means Scully and Mulder were sleeping together and dating. Frank Spotnitz out straight said Mulder was William's dad. Chris can try to retcon and control his show/characters as much as he likes but the simple truth is he lost control of them a long time ago, and they've taken on a life of their own . Mulder/Scully are in love, were never only platonic, have a son, and are expecting another baby now. Chris Carter can suck it.

JoJo l'incruste The way I like to look at it is this: In 2008 the executive producer of the show confirmed at a comic-con panel that William was the biological son of Mulder. So effectively, when the original run of the show ended before 2008, it was completely written and intended that Mulder was the father. The fact that the revival suddenly changed this can either mean two things. 1) Cancer man was lying about the paternity of the baby, as he gave nothing but his word to back up that he was in fact the father. And 2) if you don’t count the revival as canon, then the original show (season 9) finished with Mulder confirmed as the father lol (that’s what I do). I’m super late to this but oh well.
