By the way.....with this new series, how about a little "overview" ? : How many quail will those cages hold, how many do you hope to grow into, planning on selling, etc etc. And THANKS again for taking on this whole series.

These look good except for the feeders. I would make two mods to them. I would add a hinged lid for it and add a strip to the top facing the birds at least if not add a backing to it with holes big enough for the quails to fit their heads in to minimize wasted food, but that's just me.

Have you used them yet? I have the single cage 3 stack. The poop trays should be longer & a bit deeper- the poop drips down the side and onto floor- not bc I dont clean them. Also I am adding some metal cross pieces esp at the bottom as mine is not super stable- the metal pipes seem thin or something- mine wobbles. I need to turn it on its side to spray the bottom clean- I bent one leg the 1st time I tipped it to one side. Also the hose clips are not ez and I punctured the T connector, which seemed flimsy. My local hardware store carried longer better made ones, which held the 3 hoses farther apart so I can better find what is leaking next time- I think reg hose clamps or better T connects would be helpful. Also the birds flick out feed, so I cut hardware cloth to fit which helped, I still want to find a way to auto fill those feeders as these only feed about 4 days. I might like the wheels but they were like $60 extra. These are good and could be great with a few upgrades- hopefully Wynola will make some tweaks. Next set, I might try a plastic stacking cage- or make my own. Take care.

Fantastic video! Well edited and shot. Sound was good in 95% of shots. You just sold the crap out of that cage! I especially liked the watering system and the padding for the egg collection tray. Also, as promised, I DID do a research project about getting cheaper feed. It isn't finished yet but I'll explain why in a minute... Purina is the best brand I found you can buy for your quail, because they have an entire department dedicated to r&d on all of their feeds across all their brands. I'm not a Purina rep or even a fan, just the results I found. Of all the feeds, there were some fairly common consistencies in the contents with few variations in the mid range priced brands and a lot missing from the cheapest brands. Generally speaking, the following contents belong in the diet of quail: cracked corn, barley, oats, oat grouts, rye, wheat, millet, milo, popcorn (seeds, unpopped), safflower seeds (in almost ALL feeds I looked at), sunflower kernels (also in almost all feeds I looked at) and sunflower seeds. I discovered that an adult quail will eat about 20-25g/day, that apple cider vinegar is added to their water to kill parasites (works with chickens too) and that 1 rooster to 4/5 hens is ideal ratio, however I think this changes depending on where you get your advice from. I would like to look further into detailed studies if any exist as to how these ratios are determined. I also found that there are excellent solutions to the mice and rat pest problems you have faced in the past. I caution you, that in every discussion I came across on the subject of pests, that mold will kill your quail and contaminate feed and also that pests getting into your feed is the number one vector for contamination. One quail guy in Australia solved his pest problems involving the feed by using a galvanized trash can with lid firmly secured. Another guy that just focuses on rodent traps for his channel had a really effective series of solutions for controlling rat and mice problems which involved a co2 powered piston trap with peanut butter bait. This trap sells online for about $25 and uses a standard 12ou co2 canister. What makes it so great is that it doesn't stop working until it runs out of co2 and dead rodents in close proximity to the trap don't deter other rodents from falling for the trap. Didn't write down the name of the trap but you can easily find the rodent trap testers channel here on youtube. Moving on. This is a list of all the breeds I discovered in my research quest for cheaper feed: Cournix, Common Brown, Japanese Quail, Pharaoh Quail (same as Cournix), Tibetan, Cinnamon/Red, Tuxedo, Snowy/Italian, Silver, Fawn, Texas A&M, Blue, New Zealand (Extinct), Canary Island (Extinct), English White, Estonian, Manchurian, Marble, Red Range, Rosetta, Harlequin, California, Stubble, King, Rain, Red Head, Montezuma, Scale/Blue, Gambles and Bob White. I discovered about quail feed that chicken feeds are equivalent for Quail and also that insects need to make up 20% of their diet. I found out that the following foods can be used to supplement their diet: apples, pears, peaches, wheat breads and cakes. The following insects are Quail diet appropriate: crickets, mealworms, black soldier fly larvae, fly larvae (maggots), grasshoppers, locusts, grubworms silkworms and termites. The following berries can be used to supplement the quail diet: Blackberry, currant, huckleberry, manzanita, oregon grapes, salad, serviceberry and snowberry. Vegetables: broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, peas, lettuce, turnip greens. TOXIC TO QUAIL: Tomatoes are ok, but the entire rest of the plant is toxic to quail. Avacado, potatoes, rubarb, parsley and ANYTHING IN THE NIGHTSHADE FAMILY are ALL TOXIC. Absolutely no citrus or onions, they are also toxic. Ok, on to the fun part I said I'd get to in a minute: It is cheaper to grow your own feed for your quail than it is to buy it... But its gonna take you a hot minute and take time to produce. According to one channel, you need a quarter acre (1/4) of land to grow enough feed to support wild quail on your property, or one grain plot per 40 acres. This is for land purposed specifically as wildlife refuge and quail habitat and comes directly from some univeristy back east, Missouri I think. When we talk about protien content pf grains, here's what you need to know first: (g/cup, protein) Quinoa 8.14g, Spelt 10.67g, Kamut 9.82g, Teff 9.75g, Amaranth 9.35g, Sorghum 8.68g. So what this means is that when you mix a cup of one of these grains into your feed, the #.##g is how much protein is in that cup of grain. Don't forget that if you are grinding the grains for younger birds, you need to convert for mass. For example, when I looked up Spelt, 1 cup= 115 grams in flour form. If you want to grow specialized Quail feed on your land, I found a brand called Tecomate's Upland Game Bird Mix, which is formulated for dove, quail and pheasant. It contains sunflower, millet and low tannin sorghum (which is important because tannins are toxins to most species). Your coverage is 20lbs/acre for $35.98 with this product. It is NOT drought tollerant. Now for insects... I got in depth with my research here too. You have brand options and grow your own bugs options and a few feeds in this list too. Kaytee Mealworm Wild Bird Food, Flukers Freeze Dried Grasshoppers Reptile Treats, Flukers F/D Crickets R.T. (short hand to save space). Feed: Brown's Bird Lover's Blend Dove, Pigeon and Quail Blend. Oyta Shells (Crushed Oyster Shells). Diatomacious Earth, Red Lake Earth brand (for dust baths. Play sand works also, as long as it is kept DRY.) Purina Gamebird Chow (30% protein.) Natural Habitat of the Quail (Plant species they love): American Plum, Dogwood, Common Ragweed, Foxtail, tame millets, Pearl, Browntop, Lespodeza (insect attracting, great for brooding): Korean, Kobe and Common; Partridge Pea, Illinois Bundleflower, Beggars Lice (Tick Trefoil), Slender Lespodeza, Alfalfa, no till soy, clover, sorghum and of the grasses: Little Blue Stem or Orchard Grass. Ok. That's the extent of my research project, as promised, in its current form. It represents 11 pages of notes, 3 days worth of watching videos and combing through various webpages to compile. My favorite resources happen to be the Arizona Fish & Game/Wildlife Department and The University of Missouri and The Missouri Wildlife Conservation. You can find entire video series online about how to build a 40 acre wild bird conservatory from scratch, how to properly and legally field clean a quail as well as learn about all the known breeds of quail thanks to these sources. This is way more than you were expecting, I understand that. But cheaper feed=cheaper to raise quail which means cheaper food and or higher margins when you sell your birds. This is the baseline of information you didn't know you might have wanted, or probably already knew. If you want to follow up with free insects for feeding your quail, I covered that too in my notes. Its rediculous but the more you get into dropping the cost of feeding your quail, the more you realize it ties in heavily with farming and composting. Nothing goes to waste. You truely inspired me to do something productive and fostered a keen interest in raising quail. So this was my thank you. Keep doing what you do! I love your videos.

I bought the single cage unit for my quail after watching this video, I've had it since October of 2018 and its worked out great. I have however had some food spilling problems and recently one of my quail got out from the cage and into the feeding trough. Thankfully the cage I bought came with the metal cover for the feeder so the bird was contained. I only wish the doors had latches or some other mechanism, the piece of metal that wedges to keep it shut doesn't feel sturdy enough. Otherwise these are fantastic cages and I would consider purchasing again.

Unless you have no understanding of building anything or you just have money to throw around. You can but a one hundred and fifty foot roll of wire for around 79 bucks and make a hell of a lot of cages out of it. Better and stronger. And you will learn a lot in building them,But if you just want a hand full of quail to mess around with as a small hobby then go for it.
