In a way this collaboration is actually very fitting. Lacost went from a brand that was very popular and trendy to one that became a generic mall fashion brand, some saturated entry level “fashion” brand selling colourful polos to high school kids who thought they were fancy. It’s the perfect non-skater equivalent to thrasher which became the generic mall skate brand who once sold to an exclusive crowd to now selling to generic non-skaters. It’s debatable which branded needed the other more for this but I enjoy the unity of two powerhouse mall brands coming together for this corny spectacle.

I think when it comes to Nike, from the jump skateboarders hated on Nike and it took Nike a couple tries to really get into the skateboarding scene and to be accepted, and not once did Nike or Adidas ever claim to be a core company that isnt a huge corporation, but nike, adidas, etc sponsored cool people and made good shoes, and slowly skateboarders began to appreciate and support the brands. Thrasher is the self proclaimed "Skateboarders Bible" and have talked shit about celebrities wearing their shirts and companies ripping off their shit like you showed in your video. For years Thrasher was the upholder of what a "core" skateboard company is, which is why i think it's a lot more cringe and annoying to see Thrasher pull this kind of shit because they built themselves up to be perceived as a brand that would never do things like this. Also though, fuck Lacoste royally, here in the UK there's a skate shop in Liverpool called "Lost Art" They used to use the lacoste crocodile on their hoodies, and (im not 100% sure about this) but i heard lacoste had sent a cease and desist letter to Lost Art for using their logo, now fast forward a few years later and Lacoste are unsurprisingly trying to cash in on the current hype in skateboarding. This whole collaboration is a fuckery of greedy little goblins who want money, it's abvious that Thrasher doesnt fuck with Lacoste and it's obvious Lacoste doesnt fuck with Thrasher, but what they both have in common is the same lust for money money money £££$$$ P.s You look very handsome with ur new haircut

But, this only works as long as it is used in a respectable way. Ridiculing the counter opinions would be a bad look and it would not enhance the debate. The Thrasher font is actually named Banco and it was designed by Roger Excoffon for the Fonderie Olive foundry in 1951. Thrasher was birthed in the decline of skateboarding and as a method to push NHS product. If you listen to the Love Letters everyone will talk about "skateboarding was dying" and that's where thrasher began and thrived. I think the peak of thrasher in this era happened adjacent as the peak of the whole Harley t-shirts. Everyone wanted that "tough guy" look. The one thing that I appreciate from that is that it allowed for more events to happen. Aka Skate Rock and Bust or Bail and Atlanta Slamma. Also all those dudes that model had to model for the brands they ride for anyway. I think going into high fashion is just like either interests or a means to get a bigger paycheck. I think it'll come around though. In the decline of skateboarding it will remain true. #stillwatchin

they did sell skating as alluring, I loved looking at the ads. Prior to the recession when there were so many brands, analog, ambiguous, 4*, matix, krew, altamont, Rvca, eswic, volcom, insight, mada, lrg. So many brands making stuff across the board i liked. Dickies were cheap, nylon breaker was life. And yep i saw that love letters. Entropy will always be the true order...stuff like this lacoste collab and the state VICE is in...will push forward the NEXT big brother type start up/upstarts. I mean Im already hyped for Closer skateboarding. Just thrasher i cant judge them to critically gotta give respect where its due...theyre basically ad/propaganda....and the KIDS eat it right up as if its curated/culture taste making/standards to follow/uphold. Yet its just buy this buy that right from the goats mouth sold as "revolution" you can buy into participating in. XD when the revolution is just riding...experiencing the nuances of skating to the fullest. Most ppl either get it or dont...probably not skate/charge hard enough to really understand the reward aspect of skating. At the least as jeff would put it...skate bc skating itself is an act of protest and art. Your inside of an exclusive club of ppl that know what it feels like to skate/blast over lip etc...its not a sensation/feeling that is shared outside of said world. All spectators/people that wished they could skate are the losers/on the outside....and even if you just ride around not even about the tricks youre skating its a F U to everyone else that isnt doing it. A cut of freedom pie from this cruel world that can be tapped into every time you ride. That most ppl think we dont deserve, thats why the revolution continues and will never die. I never got into skating to bag watch if ppl want to act a fool or burn out thats on them theres plenty of kids that WANT IT that skate like it in line for a shot. Whats even stupider was that FASHION still always mattered in skating but it helped you shape who you are like ppl like greco/duffel/jamie/hk etc half the baker dudes dressed like rockstars as it was. Yet we werent like "OH AHH what/who are they wearing" We knew deep down we werent greco and we werent going to pull off a leather jacket like them or duffel. Like the whole cool guy thing was tied into face melting level skating. They were Humbling/personalities that made you happy to be your basic ass self and happy to have your own bag of tricks how big or little, happy to skate the same wheels or trucks as them etc. I thought ethan fowler and TNT were the coolest looking dudes on a skateboard growing up. Its just crazy to see the direction things have gone.

As a person watching skateboarding and now interested in fashion, I appreciate the opinion that you had about the overall cross between high fashion in skateboarding. Like with many counter cultures that have become mainstream over the years (ex. punk and goth, rap and hip-hop, etc.), we find a lot more moments where skateboarding has become commercialized (as you said with thrasher's popularity as a non-skateboarder item). What's tough about this collab for me is that it's the wrong collaboration to make to move both industries forward. It's obviously just a low effort cashgrab that serves no purpose (in design or collaboration sense) but to make money, and that is what irks me. Now that these two worlds are now connected more than ever (with its commercialization in some aspects), in my opinion, what's important is if a collab like this can move skateboarding forward, and in a tasteful way. In fashion business, a lot of these high fashion staples/conglomerates try to rebrand themselves with a youthful aesthetic to try and generate sales from a younger clientele. Evidently this has caused them to create stuff like this, but doesn't have any positive effects because the product itself alienates everyone but the fashion brand's audience (or fails to achieve the success of another moment). What I've noticed in fashion is that when the largest fashion companies try and take "inspiration" or use "references" from subcultures, the product that comes out from it alienates those in that culture, because it isn't serving/adding to it as you said (the difference in clientele between these items makes a subculture feel some type of way towards the fashion brand, who has an audience who usually isn't in/doesn't care about the subculture as much). Although we talk about the biggest and most unfit skateboarding models so much (Nyjah, Ishod, Yuto, and more), there is probably an even larger scene of skateboarding models who have more than just skating going for them- it's just that the big brands in fashion don't acknowledge the better fits who won't get them as much instant recognition. What I hope to see are bigger fashion labels (that actually want to be apart of skating) try harder to actually give back to the community that they take from, and can create a more unique transition between the fashion and skateboarding worlds. Smaller brands should try and coexist within skateboarding (and involve themselves with cool skaters), so that they are able to have a unique clientele of skaters, as well as fashionable people (When thinking about a brand like Dime, for example), and are able to grow the brand along with giving skaters a unique spotlight as well.

Thrasher may be the most prestigious and legitimizing place to be published as a skateboarder, but it has never been a paragon of skateboarding ethics. If they were, they would've used their platform to fund and publish legitimate reporting on the misdeeds that have been perpetuated in our community. Instead, we get tour articles where the writer and photographer hang out with the team of a board brand that's paying for a two-page ad and talk about how the van smelled. This access-driven arrangement provides us with the photography, video parts, and event coverage that we desire, but it requires cash to keep the operation afloat at the necessary scale. The "core" part of our industry is already running on fumes and has to cut corners to make ends meet by underpaying riders and outsourcing production overseas to factories with unknown-to-us working conditions, so the money won't come from there. If it has to come from ill-advised collabs with Lacoste (who sponsor at least one professional skateboarder in Torey Pudwill), then so be it. We don't have to buy it, and I don't think anyone will at that price point, but we shouldn't feel let down. This is the logical endpoint of their business model. They're going to do it again and again in more palatable forms (like collaborations with Vans and Supreme) as long as it helps their bottom line one way or another, whether it's through direct compensation or further cementing themselves as skateboarding's "bible." If we want to expect more from our media outlets, then we need to look at their business models and, critically, be ready to spend our own money on a better model. Our expectation of a constant stream of free videos has led us to this point.

He just doesn't consume his time with modeling lame brands for extra money because he knows he'll be just fine without it and ultimately happier not doing those types of things. Respect.

I really liked that you included some counter point . This makes it more fair and fun to watch, and I think you can expand on that. Gives it a more academic and marinated feel to the whole debate. Thrasher hoodie: The best way of recognizing kooks since the mid 90's.

Hey just want to point out that hockey is a little bit like skateboarding. There aren’t many big brand sports companies that make hockey equipment (adidas Nike under armor). Everything comes from Bauer, or CCM, which are hockey brands to the core.
I had foreseen this in my hourglass a few hours ago, now I feel like Dr Strange watching this video 🫡🫡🫡
That Dylan ad tho, dude was fucking fresh to the gills. Fuck i miss him
Thank you for this now I know how to feel about this collab and I will bring it up when I talk to my friends saying the exact point you were saying

Wes Kremer is way more handsome than any current 'skate model' let's be real. He just doesn't consume his time with modeling lame brands for extra money because he knows he'll be just fine without it and ultimately happier not doing those types of things. Respect. XD And RIP Jake Phelps. I hope we never say RIP Thrasher, seriously. They still do great things but wtf.

Buzz cut ACTUALLY makes you the Anthony Fantano of skateboarding 😤😤
great call on getting rid of the lezi cut
I was not expecting to see a buzzed head when I opened this video but I love it
Lacoste has collaborated with Supreme quite a few times. Thrasher has as well. While undoubtedly unappealing on every level, I didn't find it that out character for them to get together.
Thrasher doesn’t make money on the mag, they make it on merch. If you want thrasher to survive as an institution then it’s just a necessary evil.
looking good great vid dawg...loved it
“This whole video is anecdotal, there is no data” is one of the sexiest things I’ve heard on the Internet in a long time. Thank you for always clearly delineating between opinion and fact!
Dylan is the blueprint💙

Blue Tomato is killing Finland's core skate scene. Blue Tomato is owned by Zumiez for clarity.

As always, great points! 👏🏼 sidenote: I was watching, or I should rather say listening to this while making Lunch, and figured most of your content also works without the visuals, so I thought it would be cool to have the audio available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or whatever.
Youre a international treasure to skateboarding and need to be protected at all costs
Dude got bold!! What the hell!!! Pretty cool btw ❤️
I think people overestimate Phelps’ input on thrasher as a brand. Jake was the editor in chief of the magazine, not the creative director.
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, praying for you 🙏🙏

as long the money coming in with this collab guarantees that thrasher is able to make the magazine arriving every month in my mailbox, I'm fine with that.
Thanks for an upload it’s been a shitty week also love the hair cut
