We tend not to realize what great events and adventures men like this lived through when we see them in everyday life. A national treasure. Truly the greatest generation.

God Bless this fine man’ My dad joined the war turning 18 years old June 13, my dad was born at home and refused officers training and went to sea in the South Pacific as a gunners mate on an LST. I have amazing photos of New Guinea and bombed out leveled island . Never talked much about it .. I learned later he was taking supplies , tanks , jeeps and troops ‘ marine and army . The greatest generation has been passing. My mom is 97 years old and still very sharp . Living alone . We don’t know how great we are because these heroes protected us . Morality , accountability . Manners . My dad used to build model airplanes without controls . Alcohol fuel . Start ,, take off and chase it like the wind .

I’ll always believe The Greatest Generation were survivors because of the depression. They already knew hardships and patriotism.

His story about growing up during the Depression years was as interesting as his time in the War. What made this generation the Great Generation wasn't that they were superior in pedigree, knowledge, or character. It was that they were highly adaptable (absolutely contrary to what's been taught about them by today's "intelligencia"); that there was a great sense of TRUE unity; and, whether you like to acknowledge it or not, a greater dependence on God to see them through. (No, not all; as a matter of fact, there was alot of lawlessness especially via organized crime, prejudice, particularly around the Depression years); but, in general, most (see FDR's prayer speech on the radio to the nation on D-Day in Normandy). And finally, a commitment to follow through. This group of generations (Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millenials, and Gen Z) have been faced with the same challenges (maybe not exact, but in principle), and are posed with the same decisions to make. The Great Generation made theirs, earning them their name. So far, our generations have chosen in arrogance, selfishly, and foolishly; nothing that I can believe that we'll want to be remembered by.
