    @@grimreapers IDK I do think testing the capacity of CIWS to protect against a Thousand Bomber Raid would be extremely interesting given CIWS or the land version C-RAM could intercept the bombs themselves. I guess the question there is not 'can C-ram defend a city from a thousand bomber raid' but 'how many C-ram systems are required to protect a (strategic objective) from a thousand bomber raid'.

    s strange as it sounds, something like this isn't... impossible... Germany started investigating the use of high altitude SAM's in 1941, and had a working prototype in 1943... had the project leader not been killed in 42... and had germany actually funded the project properly... its likely that by 1943 germany would have been operating a sam system, as it was by 1944 they were test firing one. by the end of the war they had produced some 35 of them, but the reality is, if they had funded it properly, they might have been producing a few hundred a month. so the chances of US Pilots having to face something like the SA-1 or SA-2 missiles (25 mile range with a large 250-500lb HE Frag warhead.) where tight bomber formations would actually risk a single missile taking out not just a single bomber but 2-3 per... It would have put bombing missions in serious jeopardy.

    The Third Reich had no less than four surface to air missile programs, none of them worked well enough to be made operational. The two that had the most promise were the Hs 117 Schmetterling and the Wasserfall, and it was the capture of documents and scientists related to the programs that convinced the Soviet Union to be an early adopter of surface to air missiles and embark on the program which would produce the S-25 Berkut.

    Could we run this same scenario for modern jets now? See how 64 modern jets would do? Because I'm thinking they'd get wrecked pretty bad too given that's 5 sites x 28 missiles = 140 late model SAMS in the air. Even a modern jet could have trouble with over 2 SAMs per jet. That's a MASSIVE air defense net.

    Would have been better to use a more realistic IADS. There is a real world example where this is an issue. North Korea's Air Force has the potential to cause heavy task and target saturation against RoK/US air defense. Throw in human operators and friendly aircraft into the mix and there's a real possibility quite a few enemy aircraft will get through. Taking down IADSs was my job for nearly 20 years in the USAF and run through plenty of Joint and Coalition live fire or simulated exercises (and combat experience) to know that no country has a 100% effective IADS setup.

  • @kevinkocher9347
    @kevinkocher93472 жыл бұрын

    You should do this with sams and flak and triple A spread out into integrated defensive layers. Because that’s how many integrated air defenses work they detect and determine the incoming aircraft type and intention the if determined to be hostile and the closer they get the more they insnared they become. Iraq during the Iran- Iraq war and the gulf war used this system. Israeli has next to the US and Russia one of the densest tightest rings of integrated defense systems on the planet not rockets nor artillery shells and certainly not enemy aircraft will make it through between IDAF or ground forces batteries

One of the R-60s hits the Tomcat and seriously wounds the RIO. After a moment of tension, the F-14s returned to the aircraft carrier when they saw that the Russians were returning to their aircraft carrier and were not aggressive. it was all a confusion. Speaking of SA-2. Have you tried a string of 99 B-52’s in 3 ship pods against maybe 25 SA-2 batteries? Or, maybe scale that back to 33 B-52’s (using ECM?) and nine 6-launcher SA-2 batteries…can they reload? Maybe a couple piloted F-15’s flying “camera” escort, since we don’t have F-4E’s yet. Can the AI F-4E’s lay a chaff corridor? Probably not. 49th anniversary of Linebacker II.

    I have a suggestion for you. Between 1940 and 1944 it took the allies 26 raids to sink the turptiz. The successful raid using tallboy bombs. Could a modern airforce complete the mission in just one raid. I would assume that the attacks at sea would be almost certain to succeed. The harbour attacks a bit trickier. Would attacking the turptz in the fjord moaring with the air cover and smoke generators correctly employed stop a raid by a modern airforce? Would the turptz still sink? Could the ship be stopped with a single raid?

    @@ivvan497 not really, because modern air warning systems will detect and ID the raid as soon as it leaves it's own territory, that in turn means that they will be tracked and as soon as the raid target can be calculated from their heading, speed and altitude they will be subject to long range SAM attrition while interceptors scramble. Once interceptors provide a confirmed ID on what type and version of bombers there is in the raid, their operational range will be calculated, all following interceptor sorties will have their loadout optimized accordingly and SAMs as well as gun SPAAG targeting systems will be recalibrated to match. Self propelled or otherwise highly strategically and tactically mobile surface to air assets will also be scrambled, diverted and concentrated along their entire over land flight path from areas that are not suffering from massive imminent air attack. Eg: if the target was in the Ruhr valley modern AA assets from Western Germany, continental parts of Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands and Northern France could be redeployed and concentrated along the flight path of not already in range from wherever their formation is deployed at the time the raid is detected over the channel or north sea while forming up.
