The Walther P5 also ejects to the left. The compact version was issued by the British Army as the L102A1 to the Royal Irish Regiment as a concealed personal protection weapon. The P5 was issued to a few police forces worldwide, most notably the Dutch Police until they adopted (also notably) the Walther PPQ in 2012.

Many soldiers of the Bundeswehr hated the P1 (an "improved" version of the P38) because the service version was poorly adjusted. They said, you have 8 missed shots and 3 precise throws, pistol, mag and holster. On a 15m range, many said it would be more effective to throw than to shoot.

Bullshit. They missed because nobody taught them to shoot properly. The P38/P1 is by design far more accurate than it's successor, the P8. It is also extremely sensitive to poor trigger control or unstable hands. Unlike modern handguns, the slide does not encompass the barrel. With other handguns, the extra weight of extending the slide to the muzzle and the leverage dampen muzzle movements induced by shaky hands or bad trigger control. With the P38/P1, not so. During basic training, I struggled myself, failing the first exercise (P-S-1) several times before finally shooting 25 rings (out of 50). My late grandfather, himself an infantry officer during WW II, had me render my "Schießbuch", saw the failures documented and asked "Grandson, what the hell did you do there?" I answered something in the line of "old gun, absolutely impossible to hit anything, nobody does." Wrong answer. His next question was "But you do still use the P38?" -"Yeah, except it's called P1 now..." Which lead to him making it absolutely clear that not hitting your target is NEVER the gun's fault, but always the shooter's. He explained the center of gravity / muzzle weight leverage concept outlined above, and then had me do the following exercise. Make a fist, just like you'd grip an imaginary pistol, then rest a pencil on trigger finger and the crease of your hand between thumb and the first finger. (The pencil runs in the same line that a gun would point). Then slowly "squeeze the trigger" - the pencil may not move (other than back and forth in a straight line, but NO sidewards sway is acceptable). This trains the straight line trigger pull. He had me do this for the entire weekend I was visiting them. He also advised me to strength train the trigger finger specifically, as double action needed for a different exercise (P-S-2) is indeed relatively tough, and the stronger you are, the better you can control the pull. So when carrying home the groceries, try to hold the bag just with one finger... The next time I shot the same exercise, I got 48 rings. You NEED some training and you need to know what you are doing with the P1. But if you do, even the most worn down, 40 year old P1 you could find in a basic training unit would serve you well. During my whole service, I have always preferred the P1 over the P8. The latter is the better gun for combat due to its doube-stack magazine and because accuracy does'nt really matter in ultra-short distance combat, but still, the P1 is nicer and more rewarding to shoot. If you can.

I Love your video's Mr.Vickers. I have always respected your expertise and service to our great nation. I didnt get to join the Military for medical reasons beyond my control. I will always wish I could have served as I have always had a passion for Military and Police firearms. Keep up the Great work you do and I look forward to taking some of your classes this year(2017).

Oh my God ! Ten rounds with a Luger and no jam ! That is a bloody miracle.. Undoubtedy, the P08 is one of the most elegant pieces of crap ever designed, as far as handguns go.. As for the P38. I shot with a "P1" (post war version of a P38, with an aluminium frame). I was unable to consistently hit a 10 inch frying pan at ten meters. Like one round out of four or five...Neither were my two buddies.. And neither was the swiss gunsmith who was with us. To this day, this remains a mystery. The alloy frame ? A faulty barrel ?

The Luger's kryptonite is a single grain of sand. Or speck of dirt. Or smidge of dust. Or under lubrication. Or anything other than FMJ. Or light loads. Or hot loads. Or 100 other things I forgot to mention. But the automatics that preceded it were even more flawed.

I feel like if Ken and Larry got too close while talking, they'd just end up slapping each other.

No offense Vickers, the video doesn't really need that many 'talking head' shots. The table POV is good enough and with more close ups of the guns will be great. And with the gun close up shots, it feels abit disorienting when the POV keeps switching.

The P1 is almost identical to the P38 and has in fact been the standard service pistol of Germany until it was replaced by the P8 (HK USP) in the early 90s.
