These are always interesting, thanks for putting them together! I think Chyna looks better with the ponytail, it completes her early 1999 look. The casket actually is in the final game but you have to swap another weapon for it under the ring apron. Possibly the same for the steel steps.

They actually had her top drawn better on the beta version as well. Her final version was a little sloppy for the top. Its crazy.

Yeah ponytail Chyna should've made the cut

The beta Hardcore Holly model at 0:54 (on the left) actually looks much more accurate to his likeness than the final model! (On the right)

The first WWE Smackdown game on the PlayStation 1. Look how far we have come in games and wrestling now. Nice work covering the beta from the cutting room floor page for the game. Some things would have made the game a bit better and others were best cut. I'd love to see more builds of other WWE wrestling games be covered.

I remember having played a rare variation of the game on a bootleg multigame CD, with the character select faces all in blue backgrounds instead of the Smackdown ones. Maybe I played the beta back then without noticing! 😲

Yeah, if you had a modded PS1 it sounds like it was pretty common as i had this version too. I remember even having to look properly for an iso of the final version a couple of years back because all you could find on the big romsites were the beta version

The casket, and steel steps are still in the PAL version as weapons

Casket is definitely in the final game

I actually been playing the beta version for years appearantly...It was a pirated version they used to sell in the middle east back in the day for cheap...it was weird and had strange yellow text during matches naming every move you do and you could put the same wrestler against one another and what not. The question on my mind is how in the world did they get the beta version and managed to sell it?

The names of the moves is actually a feature in the final game, you can turn it on in the pause menu

Me and my friends had modded PS1's and we knew someone with a CD burner along with the internet. We saw Smackdown on his 'list' and thought it was strange since it was still months before release, and had zero clue what all the debug text was all about lol This was in the UK too. Maybe a magazine or something had a preview build and it somehow got out onto the net.

The CAW suite in the final version was already severely lacking, for them to remove so many parts seems unnecessary. 3:37 geeze, they removed tables AND caskets? I’d be willing to bet they removed a bunch of things like that so they could save them for the sequel. Wouldn’t surprise me.

What track is this? I don't remember it from the OST,.nor could I find it as part of it. Edit: The first one specifically

The original beta model of Hardcore Holly certainly looks better than the one for the final version!

I wonder where to get the war zone and smackdown 1 beta versions. Wonder anyone had those before.

The casket was a weapon in the final. It was Undertakers, only thing you couldn’t do is put someone inside

why there was lack of ring matts/aprons in the final game? they could added something like backlash 1999, or some in your house events from 1998

The beta logos for Survivor series 98 could of kept if for extra mat uses

Yeah I understand why they would update them, but they could have left the older ones in to be used too.

It's really wild how generic some of those superstar photos look in the beta. Nearly all of them literally just stood in front of a camera and did nothing like it was a driver's license shoot or something. Ken Shamrock's is especially hilarious for some reason.

Yeah there's actually been discussion on this, so could very well be either a glitch or a regional issue.

Why did they remove Ken Shamrock from SmackDown 2 game? I mean this game came out like a week after WWF No Mercy came out and in WWF No Mercy he was still in the game as an unlockable of a character. Why didn’t they just have Ken Shamrock being unlockable character in the game?

There's a chance No Mercy may have been too far along in dev to remove him when the WWF wanted him out? No idea. But Shamrock had been gone from the WWF for over a year by the time these games came out so I'm not even sure why he was in No Mercy.

@@AnEternalEnigma I wish there would be more of a clarity to the story to why. When I got WWF No Mercy for the N64 he was in the game but he was in unlockable character that you had to purchase to get in the shop. But yeah, that game came out in 2000 but I always wondered why SmackDown 2 didn’t keep them in as a unlockable character since there was clearly beta and uploading him into the game already and considering the fact that he is in the game actually still as a rumble participant I don’t see why they wouldn’t include him. If you play in Smackdown 2 royal rumble match, he sometimes makes an appearance in the royal rumble match same with Big Show who got sent down to OVW at the time. So Ken Shamrocks code was still in Smackdown 2 because of that, they must’ve taken him out very late into if they forgot to remove him from being randomized into the royal rumble match when playing that match. Personally I think they should’ve just kept him in at that point.

That was the correct spelling when they first joined WWF in 99 and came in doing their old stuttering act from ECW. It was later on when they changed the spelling to Bubba.

He was always Buh Buh Ray Dudley in ECW. When they came over to the WWF, he was "Buh Buh" for a few months then they changed it to "Bubba". D-Von was always "D-Von" in ECW and the WWF.
