This is a classic. This game Smackdown 2 Wrestlemania 2000 and No Mercy are my favorite games during the PS1/N64 era.

@@dannythedon82 i guess it couldnt touch the n 64 games in your perspective. Smackdown 2 had its flaws but surely was comparable to wwf no mercy. If you think thats laughable, check the reviews and ratings given by critics on both games and you will see that smackdown 2 has pretty much the same scores as wwf no mercy (game rankings and metacritic for instance). However if still not convinced, let me point out a few things that smackdown 2 was better than wwf no mercy: 1- Match types... Tlc, casket, hell in a cell, ... All those match types were available on sd 2 but not on the n64. 2- the caracters look better on sd 2 as wwf characters look kinda odd and ugly tbh. 3- A huge backstage area... No nercy also had backstage but in SD 2 you had restaurants, diner, plaza, dressing room, shower.... it was endless Now both games had a champion packed roster and both throw you to the atittude era as soon as you turn on the console. Wwf no mercy had better season mode (sd 2 season mode was killed with all those loadings and life meter bars you are forced to wath while simulating the cpu matches. So as you see, they are both great games, both on my top 5 list for sure... but saying the ps one games coulndt TOUCH the n64... well in wcw games you are 100% right as the ps consumers never got their hands on the great wcw revenge or something comparable. But with the smackdown series, i think it is safe to say that the PS players had now real reasons to smile. Oh and for those that even say wwf no mercy is better than hctp... well... i respect your opinion but i cant thing of a SINGLE thing that HCTP would be inferior to no mercy.

This did have its own intro. Looks like the one on TV but its not.

For the lack of authentic entrances, it's possible the cd-roms didn't have enough disk space to accommodate full entrances, so they had to settle with the characters walking in front of their entrance videos.

I think you were a bit too harsh on this one. Smackdown's shortcomings are due to a truncated development cycle and the limitations of the Playstation - particularly its lack of VRAM. Though the engine for Smackdown is a modified version of a Japanese wrestling game (mentioned in comments below), the graphical re-skinning and changes to the engine were delayed thanks to various contractual conflicts on both Yukes' part (regarding repurposing the game engine), and WWE's part (regarding including certain wrestlers on the roster). So, with those delays, certain aspects of the game suffered; like the story mode, the interface, and especially the CAW mode. The Playstation's hardware shortcomings necessitated the short video clips for the entrances, as it simply wasn't technically feasible to include a fully rendered in-engine arena entrance over FMV with how deep the roster is. That said, having owned both War Zone and Attitude at the time prior to Smackdown, for me Smackdown blew them out of the water from a presentation and gameplay standpoint. Where WWE's offerings from Acclaim felt flat, lifeless, sluggish, and drab, Smackdown was vibrant, exciting, action-packed, and had the look and feel of a wrestling match in an actual arena. The lighting effects and camera angles in particular were leagues beyond anything else in the wrestling game sphere at the time. You can really see just how forward-thinking Yukes and THQ were at the time with this title, and it becomes even more apparent with Smackdown 2.

I can't believe how many people bitched about the entrances and still do, I genuinely think they are awesome. When this game came out, it was impossible to get high quality footage of the titantron videos, even if it was only 10 seconds or so from each one, I thought that was amazing to see back then, lighting effects and changing facial expressions were top notch for the era

I like this comment I very strongly agree when the step In at the time they made wrestling games so much fucking better mainly from the gameplay perspective yukes was so talented back & those golden days I fucking miss those days so much gameplay fun & creativity

Yep agreed. This game was awesome at the time. Gameplay and presentation leagues ahead of any prior PlayStation wwf games. I don’t think this guy really grew up playing this. Otherwise this review would have been completely different.

The entrances and lack of arenas were due to graphic limitations of the PS1. Just Bring It was the first PS2 game and they added detailed entrances and some arenas

this is definitely my most played wwf game, i loved it as a kid, put thousands of hours into it with my cousin

After watching your re-review of this game, I wanted to rewatch your OG review. I have to admit, I really love seeing how much you evolved/changed ever since your OG reviews. Even though, you sounded a bit harsh with this one back then, I can’t get mad, as you were simply stating your opinion and there’s nothing wrong with that. Not to mention, another reason why I love your reviews, old or new, is because you state your reviews based on your first experiences from way back then. As someone who sadly didn’t grow up with late 90s gaming, I always get curious from my brothers and cousins on what/how it was like. But we didn’t become wrestling fans until 2005. So when I discovered your channel, I was blown away by all your wrestling game reviews. I watched them all, and absolutely loved them. Not to mention, it was because of you that I wanted to get some of these games and try them for the first time ever and I can safely say I’m now an AKI fan and a classic SmackDown fan after your reviews. Can’t wait for you to revisit more games later on. Sorry for the long comment, but I really loved seeing how far you have come, homie, and I hope you’re here to stay as you really are one of my favorite KZreadrs ever.

I remember loving this games entrances, the first wrestling game I had were you can see their live action music videos! Space age shit back then!

What made this arcade game style so good is that you could play with your friends who didn't have to be wrestling fans and enjoy it!!

I still prefer music over looped commentary for wrestling games.

This game was a classic to all the wrestling games that came before them then it was 2 and it became a legend i thought this was the shit. The guys in this game all of them won't be in another game again.

Damn, I love how the SMACKDOWN! logo rolls across the screen during a finisher. It always made it special for me.

I loved the 2 player season mode I would have the WWF title and my cousin would have the IC and we would be the tag champs lol 2 man power trip before there was one but I was Austin and he was The Rock

I played this more than any game in my life. That season mode just went on forever with sooooooo many different situations I was like wtf I was like 80 years in and just got a new cutscene or whatever lol

For Myself SmackDown! 1&2 were excellent I was blown away the first time I rented it from block busters who remembers those days. I could do a suplex with out hitting pause to look it up.I still play it sometimes and remember how good SD 1 was it's still fun to play and the reason WWE 2k17 is possible thank you SmackDown!1.

I actually really like the main menu for this game, and all the Smackdown! games really. In fact I differ with you on the presentation entirely, I love it all, and I like the arcade style. I do agree with the Create a Wrestler though.

Music is simply amazing in this game!

I had this WWF game a long time ago on the original Playstation, I agree with you that there wasn't a lot of emphasis on grappling, it's more similar to a fast paced Arcade fighting game, but it was the first Smackdown game that was ever made so of course it wasn't going to be perfect. War Zone and Attitude had the better animations but the problem was how to execute them on the controller. Smackdown was much better because it was easier to learn

I still prefer this game over Smackdown 2 for sure the loading was quick and you could sim matches quicker on season mode

This is more of a 50-50 fighting and wrestling game which is why its great!

I was 15 when I got WWF SmackDown and WWF SmackDown 2 for X-Mas 2000

The one thing that change besides the scene commentary is that we used to get selections of wrestling games he used to come out maybe every few monthsone minute you got smackdown next minute you got raw

I like this game and music at the time. it was like wow at the time

I love the original SD games up to SVR 07, But I have everyone since the First SD

You don't even talk about the continuous rank system where all matches effect it. That is where the replay value came in. Making a certain wrestler the champion including Vince McMahon. Later games updated and ruined it by keeping the rankings for each belt instead of overall. This to me was the by far the best wrestling game. Wish they would have focused on story modes in the sequel and not messed with the other stuff. But this game allowed you to create your own story. So that's why it was better.

There's Davey Boy Smith The British Bulldog on credits clip if you beat the game, but I have a question that unanswered until today, why He's not on the game? Honestly, i think it would be great if we can play as british bulldog

Hard to get my head around why you hate this game so much, when this was released it was completely amazing, compared to the WCW Mayhem opposing title released around the same time it was quick, energetic, violent. Exactly how the era of wrestling was back then. The music matches the fast gameplay, you don't need long entrances either.

2:18 = Perfection. That theme song though

The reason why Yukes had the wrestlers walk into front of their entrance videos as their entrances was because of the hardware limitations of the PS1. We wouldn't get real entrances until Just Bring It on the PS2.

I mean, the Titantrons were included, so it's a lot less memory for the complete entrances because of it, and the game was a bit rushed during its development cycle

I think the intros look cool

The first game in the SmackDown! series. I bought it at the Berryessa Flea market back in the early 2010s. I really appreciate this game as being the first game in the series.

The thing I really hated about Smackdown's create-a-wrestler mode is that I like using the Brain buster as my finisher (I called it the lightning bolt) but what smackdown calls a "brain buster DDT" is actually a jackhammer like Goldberg uses. The other thing about it is you had to unlock a lot of the moves. In games like No Mercy and even Wrestlemania 2000, they were all there for you.

It's called a SmackDown Meter I love the music in SD and SD 2

There was one of wwe ps1 (I don't remember which one)... which you were able to launch your opponent from the building... that was so fun

There is a few things wrong with the game, I'll give you that but *THIS* is better than 2K16 will ever be. 2K16 feels like a let down with the grappling system.

I've yet to play 2k16, mostly because I felt the game engine in 2k15 was a mess! But I still want to pick up 2k16 for roster purposes alone.

***** I never played 2K15 past a few matches, it felt lacking compared to 2K14. 2K14 was a fine game except that it felt a bit too slow at times. 2K16 has the graphics (for the PS4 and Xbone) as well as a roster to match but the gameplay is just so much worse than 2K15 and 2K14, my only advice is, rent it don't buy it and see for yourself. It's so slow compared with the other two.

...and he would soon learn Backyard Wrestling had the worst create a wrestler mode in all of history... Despite not being as popular as it's sequel, this game was still fun to mess around with, especially when you consider it had better load times, most notably during Royal Rumble matches.
