Poland had the 4th largest army in WW II, so Canada having the third largest Navy, and 4th largest airforce by the end of the war, an ocean away from the action, seems very legit.

Wait, what? Poland surly didn't have the fourth largest army in WWII, their main problem during the invasion was that Poland didn't have as much ready military personnel compared to Germany. From what I've found, Poland had around 850k-950k mobilized soldiers, with their max of 1.5 million soldiers, but they couldn't mobilize 'in time' to be ready in the fight. (this 'in time' was, as far as I know, a result of a political/diplomatic hurdle, the Polish military wanted to be more prepared, but couldn't. I'm no expert for this so I suggest an in-depth look into specialized sources.) The Soviet Union had 36 million, Germany 18, the USA 16, Japan 9 and Great Briton 6 million. China was at 14 million. At least these are the numbers I find on a quick search, they might vary from different sources. However, these are around ten times higher than the numbers for Poland; the fourth largest army at the time should be, from these numbers, China. Maybe you've looked at a misleading graph or something else, my instinct says it was a graph of victims/deaths from military and civilian population. In this category, Poland was indeed the country who suffered the 4th highest losses, with the Soviet Union being first, China second and Germany third. A gigantic percentage of these Polish losses were civilian, sadly.

​@@DaRealKakarroto You're most likely correct, I never looked up the exact numbers when it comes to Poland's military back in the day, but I do know for a fact that they were far below survivability. That being said, I believe this misconception comes from the fact that the Polish government back then was spreading propaganda about Poland's strength, partially to ease the public, and partially due to miscommunications.

You don't invest a lot of money on training and marketing for a gladiator, only to let him die on his first fight and start from 0 all over again. Gladiators were more or less like wrestlers, they are giving an entertaining fight, not a lethal fight. Sure one could in theory put a bunch of untrained slaves to clumsily swing swords at each other until one dies, but it is way cooler to have those badass big guys pulling cool fight moves and have rival history to hype their fights.
