Being "gangsta" is fucking stupid, just look at the death count motivated by gangs in L.A. Ask true, authentic emcees such as Rakim, he tried to work with Dre but he wanted Ra to be a specific way (more gangsta) but he could never work like that. A Tribe Called Quest, KRS-1, GZA, Rakim, Guru, Kane, Slick Rick etc were all about positivity, love, unity and guidance. That is what really inspires and uplifts entire nations. This is how you can tell apart a real Hip-Hop head from an amateur, the true head realizes where, what and why Hip-Hop as a culture started in the 70's Bronx, meanwhile a newcomer observes from the outside, and fails to correctly interpret the message, thinking it's cool to be a gangsta/hustler/dealer/gangbanger, Rakim himself said "there is nothing glamorous about being a gangster".

'rap'is not invented, 'rap' is just chanting in so-called 'hiphop' style. every people in every place, every time chanted. it's common form of expression in entire human culture. from prehistoric warrior chanting for success of hunting to religous chants to angry citzen's rally cry. has all the same root. I'm not denying that 'rap'is unique, but just saying 'rap' is not just popped out of nowhere. it derived from african-american lifestyle and culture. it's more like naturally borned, than artificially created. and how silly the east coast vs west coast thing. man, that shit's just made up by not real rappers or african-american people. that conflict was 'made' by entertainment companies to 'characterise rappers' for profit. and of course. they were almost white people. just think about it a moment and let's remind some classic old-school raps. what do they usually say? they usually say about themselves, and life surrounding them. they are socially awaken, but highly focused on their local places. old-school rap was very, very local-based culture. do they say 'fuck the nuclear-power-generators'? do they say 'fuck the gulf war'? 'fuck the governer of this state' or 'fuck the california state assembly'? no. maybe later they acknowledge the east-west thing and reacted to that, and extended their boundaries to another level but at that time, most of the african-american people of compton gave very little attention to whatever happening in bronks. vice versa.
