Sorry for the 720p, might re-render later. This is a detailed breakdown of the Vanilla WSG meta in 2019. This video is focused on how you should play out a competitive WSG match against an enemy Premade.
Topics include the map & callouts, optimal team setups, where each class should position, how each class can maximize their impact on the game, and effective team communication. This video assumes that both teams are running an ideal setup & spamming consumes, but the concepts discussed can be applied to any level of play.
Don't expect perfect gameplay here. This video is for informational purposes. I click a Sapper at 12:54 because I was holding down my mic key. Sue me.
1:15 - Ideal class composition
2:18 - Map overview & callouts
3:16 - Start of match setup
4:22 - Getting the flag out
5:44 - Mid phase (both flags taken)
6:45 - How to lurk as a Rogue
8:35 - Stalemate setup (both FCs safe)
11:27 - Repick situations
12:14 - Cap situations
13:39 - Final thoughts

    Something i never see discussed is the rez cycle and cycling your role. If offense falls apart, it usually means you're split by default. A lot of people will rush straight back to offense... but typically your D is going to be under heavy pressure at this point and you need to 'reset'... 1st wave should run back to flag room, defense come down if they arent kiting already, defend there as necessary, and 2nd wave break up any stragglers coming up tunnel... then pivot back to O as a group when situation is under control.... timing is crucial - cant wait for last guy to die. Call it and counter attack. If one or two are crossing mid or stragglers, take opportunity to keep their rez cycles staggered. When your O is successful, you'll almost always lose somebody... and they need to rez looking for a repick FC. Things get jumbled up very fast. Bodies in right place and time can be more important than exact comps for Off/Def. Sometimes it's best to commit suicide. I can usually get halfway up the garden even with room defenders on me... makes it easy for a 2nd fc to take it ramp or gy while i mount from res and make a beeline to keep them up.

    Hi, nicely done, very enjoyable to watch. As a hunter though I wouldn't recommend going towards mid during Default Setup because it is very likely that you wont be able to catch mage doing gy jump or going through somewhere else. Usually standing on the top of fence right above tunnel will allow you to catch any mages from anywhere. You can track both sides at the same time and you are also able to use Eagle's eye if you see that mages aren't pushing fast. This will help your druid / mages by giving them informations on the enemy team defense.

    Very good video. I recognize all of this from my recent ranking experience =) One small I think personally think you should have added is when to make the call set up for "the next round". For instance if the EFC has a guaranteed score let him run with his team and score and everyone on your team should get back into positions instead of pointlessly chasing the EFC when it serves no purpose. Sometimes WSG premade vs. premade gets hectic and the team will end up scattered all over the map. In those instances it's important to get back to the overall strategy and setup :) But again - really good and informative video =)

    Wow I guess much has changed since I played vanilla! I got to rank 12, standing 1 in honor every week but we never ran specific comps. We just took whoever wanted in from our guild/PvP friend group. Sometimes we’d have four warriors in warsong and let me tell you that was a blast. My buddy the enhancement shaman dropped windfury totem and our ashkhandis would be sweeping striking heads off the enemies so fast.

  • @christopherozouf

    @christopherozouf

    Agreed with you there. Comps changed a lot back in original vanilla because what classes were currently hitting rank 12 was constantly changing. Plus sometimes people would have to drop out for a while so you'd just sub in people you knew didn't suck. On my realm at least there was never more than one premade per faction going for rank 14 so unless you got queue'd against the enemy pre-made it didn't really matter as you'd be camping undergeared pug's in the graveyard while your FC's would be free to run. Arathi Basin took arguably more skill because your group couldn't just slaughter the enemy pugs in mid and then graveyard camp.

  • @OhhgeeHaptixGaming

    @OhhgeeHaptixGaming

    5 жыл бұрын

    You usually don't want to run a cleave type setup in Vanilla WSG because class roles are so distinct & its all about individual classes doing their job. Totally unlike retail RBGs where huge teamfights usually determine the outcome of the game. Cleave comps (stacking melee, stacking DoT/drain classes, stacking caster DPS, etc.) are so effective in RBGs because its all based around teamfights, but in Vanilla (specifically WSG) you really need all classes represented because each class has a unique way of impacting the game's outcome. AB is a little different because its more teamfight oriented but still not nearly as much as retail RBGs. That being said 2 Warriors is super viable IMO, especially for Horde. They just need to be stacked gear wise and have really solid support players (Priest/Shaman/Paladin) around them. A huge part of the difference between Warriors being effective or struggling to connect is how good their dispellers are at staying out of CC and not getting caught out of position.

    @@OhhgeeHaptixGaming Thanks for this very comprehensive reply O.G, It was very helpful ! About your alliance setup, I noticed that you made the choice to run with only one Paladin. Paladins are the best healers in vanilla. It would be great if you could explain why you prefer using priests as backbone healers instead of pallies. Priests are vulnerable to melees and Viper Sting, they also also lack mobility and go oom fast. It is true that priests have more utility spells but isn't it better to run with 2 pallies and only 1 Priest ? Thanks in advance for your reply.

  • @OhhgeeHaptixGaming

    @OhhgeeHaptixGaming

    @@leglonglon its less about healing and more about Dispels. Priest is the only class in Vanilla that can dispel offensively and defensively - as in they can remove buffs/potions from enemies but also remove CC/DoTs from their Teamates. This makes the super versatile. Paladins main value is Freedom/BoP/Sac and having Bubble as an oh shit button. Cleanse (pally dispel) is also crazy good to have on your Warrior because of how it functions (removes multiple debuffs with 1 press) As for Viper sting you can remove that with classicdb.ch/?item=3386 and classicdb.ch/?item=19440 if you're having mana problems

He is 55 already, so I would never delete him, but I'm worried if people won't just shun me off in favor of Dwarfs/Gnomes instead. Does perception has a good use in RBGs or not at all? The stalemate setup is 5 on def and 6 on offence?^^ We used to send 2 mages (or mage/lock) and a rogue as hit squad, PoM pyro and heavy cc. Works great against pugs and inattentive premades. Usually if this failed several times we'd send 7 or 8 people which at that point our enemies didn't expect. IMO the best strategy is the one your enemy doesn't expect, so having a few backup plans and not playing a default strategy is always great. The video is great because it offers the basis for understanding how WSG should be played. Everything else can be evolved from here.

  • @OhhgeeHaptixGaming

    @OhhgeeHaptixGaming

    5 жыл бұрын

    Great question. When I rolled on my first Vanilla server in 2012 I was very confused by the way the Premaders approached Warsong Gulch. I had recently quit retail (late Cata/early MoP i think?) where of course RBGs were all about the "ball of death" strategy, DoT cleaves, etc. So when I was first being introduced to Vanilla BG's I thought the same thing, why not just run a 10 man pain train back and forth? A huge part of the reason its not effective in Vanilla is because a mitigation stat like Resil doesn't exist, and neither does the damage/healing downscaling in PvP that current retail has. In retail, flag carriers can tank a TON of damage, and as long as they're being healed and don't overextend they won't die. Vanilla just doesn't work like this. If even 3-4 enemies hard swap and connect on your FC they will kill him in the blink of an eye, especially in a premade vs premade game where everyone is geared. Flag carrying in Vanilla is much, much more about kiting and avoiding damage completely than modern WoW where a FC/Healer combo can tank multiple enemies as long as stacks aren't high. The other huge difference is that the BG map in Vanilla does not show the enemy flag carrier's position. In retail it shows the EFC on the map, so its completely pointless to try and be sneaky or play mind games in terms of juking and kiting. Good FC's in Vanilla are able to fake out their enemies and make clean escapes due to not being marked on the map. An incredible Druid can toy with the enemy offense without them ever even coming close to connecting on him. TLDR; Resil/scaling allows flag carriers to tank a lot of damage on retail, and the EFC being marked on the map takes away most of the mindgame meta that is so important for Vanilla flag carrying

    @@OhhgeeHaptixGaming Thanks for the detailed response.That totally makes sense in the stalemate situation. What about when nobody has the flag though? And of course I'm not saying it would be better, just asking for your opinion/what you've experienced.

  • @OhhgeeHaptixGaming

    Itakio mid control is pretty crucial especially in the early game. If your flag team manages to escape but you have no mid control they will probably die. It’s possible to win without mid control but it’s an uphill battle with 0 room for error. Having mid control is much better. Try to match your opponent’s mid presence and keep enemies controlled while your FC crosses

  • @Itakio

    @Itakio

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@OhhgeeHaptixGaming I'm not seeing how this addresses my question. With my suggestion, mid should be under very good control. I'm basically saying you send everyone mid, including any defenders or anyone playing somewhat back (so maybe take a different class instead of a rogue?) and aim to engage the enemy team in mid, win the skirmish by outnumbering them (they are down a player/players because they probably have defenders), and then control mid from there. Meanwhile your druid and possibly mage are going to get the flag. From there, you are at an advantageous position, and once your druid/mage make it back to your base, you can converge on the EFC who should be split from his team. That's a totally ideal situation though, and I imagine it might not work out.

    Mainly Clothies. Warlocks are a good target if they do not get any peel. WL Trinket does not peel stuns or slows, so you can stick to them hard while you are fear imune. Kill their CC potential and then your team can go for FC without having to worry for fears. Mages are a suboptimal target tho. You as a warri have great damage and cc potential and are amazing at initiating fights. A well times mass fear can net your team an easy clothy kill (be it WL or Priest).

    Lots of people have asked what FAP means, its short for Free Action Potion. Here are links to the consumables referenced in the video: Free Action Potion (FAP) - classicdb.ch/?item=5634 Amazing for Flag Carriers, also very useful for offense team especially Rogues/Warriors. Only Priests & Shamans (& Felhunter Lock pet) can dispel it, so proper positioning from these classes is crucial in a competitive game. If a Rogue+Warrior FAP on your FC and your Priest is ~300 yards out of position or stuck in CC, your FC will probably die. Timing is also important when it comes to popping a FAP; if you use it right in front of a Priest, Shaman, or Warlock with Devour Magic off CD, you just wasted your gold. Use it when these classes are out of range, stuck in CC, or your team has too much pressure for them to use globals dispelling. Restorative Potion - classicdb.ch/?item=9030 This one is great for support classes (Priest/Shaman/Paladin) to avoid getting stuck in Polymorph, Rocket Helm, Fear, etc. Also can be useful for Rogues because it removes Faerie Fire as well as most DoTs and can let you get more restealths in a chaotic fight. Skull of Impending Doom - classicdb.ch/?item=4984 Also remember that every player in your premade (except Warriors) should have this offhand equipped when its not on cooldown. Use it preemptively when you think you're about to get sheeped, rocket helmed, etc. It's another tool to keep yourself out of CC so you can stay in the fight and help your team establish pressure. I have a guide for obtaining and using this item on my channel - check it out.

    I never agreed with the set-up the meta in classic seemed to favor (basically what you are proposing here). I remember facing this on some early private servers and my strategies still worked against it pretty (might even have been against APES =O and I recognise a lot of the other guys playing competitively in other videos - I think Nuxxy, Greatwizard and others might still remember me). The set-up and playstyle I preferred was developed back in Vanilla. Though the skill level has gone up significantly since Vanilla, the positioning and team movement seems to have gone down from the old days. This classic meta build reminds me a lot of the old Eurocomp from Arena whereby mobility is the priority. My most favored build sacrificed mobility and traded it for raw tankiness and fire power. It was what was necessary for horde IMO to counter the alliance. When we were running our league back in 2006, set-up I liked was 2 warr, 2 mage, 2 lock, 2 Shaman, 2 Priest. Was very strong against ulility/mobility teams like the meta set-up above. We used a warrior as our flag runner; both geared out the teeth with both offensive and defensive gear. Team would win the mid field fight with overwhelming fire power (easily I might add), secure the flag and march it down the field as a unit. 10 man against 8 or 9 in the midfield and the 10 man would always win; especially with the raw spell damage, mortal strikes and healing. Required very good focus fire and coordination but it would always come out on top. Once flag is secure, grind down the enemy offense till its blunted then split the teams into offense and defense. This period was flexible depending on what the enemy did but the key was the blunt the enemy's mobility and momentum. It was a very "negative / turtle" way of playing the game, slow moving and usually unkillable. So much so that we used to get hate mail on the server forums LOL. And this strategy was effective against most of the top pvp guilds A-teams back when Xrealms came out and later on the early private servers. IMO warrior flag runner was seriously underrated. With the druid being a 10/10 flag runner, the warrior with the right gear was 9.5. D stance gives you massive mitigation, you are not vulnerable to fear or rogues, you have shield wall as an "oh shit" ability, piercing howl to slow down the entire enemy team, demo shout, thunder clap etc etc. Then your massive dodge, parry and block chance. Plus another Mortal strike on defense. Warriors were most vulnerable to mages + ironically other warriors. Then for the rest of the team com, the 2 mages + 2 warlocks + 1 elemental shaman (sometimes ran 2 resto shamans, or a tank/resto plus shaman because the caster dps was usually enough) provided huge burst damage which could not be mitigated. Then healers could give 2 x purge + 2 x dispel. 2 discipline priests with R14 gear would be basically unkillable and with the healers cross healing each other; plus resto shaman burst healing, toughness and ancestral fortitude = the entire team basically becomes 4 X as tanky. I found druid flag runners on horde to be overrated (though still very good). Horde druids are just never going to be as shifty as alliance druids and are especially vulnerable to rogues + warlocks. The key to Warrior flag runners was to support each other as the warrior flag runner spent more time exposed in the mid field. Keep moving, grind down your opponents and wins almost always followed. This also gave us better hunting capacity against the opponents defense and the locks just tear up druid flag runners. Then when the flag is captured, with a flag runner (warrior) immediately on offense, we could "turn around" and immediately run the flag again without having to risk a hand off. And with specific strategy calls, we would immediately be 2-0 up in a matter of minutes and the enemy premade in absolute disarray. IMHO trying to run the meta comp as horde, seems like its not taking advantage of the horde strengths. I had a few other strategies which features the ommitted classes but i usually built those around what we had available on the day itself. Have a rogue? Have him hug the flag runner (orc rogues here are underrated :))) ). Have a hunter? Play the hunter as a sweeper, etc etc. Or run double hunter with double entrapment. etc etc. My 2 cents. Miss the game dearly actually. Wish I still had my warrior, would love to try out my strategies against the top teams and players in the modern era. Just don't have the time to commit to gearing anymore. Nice guide though!

    Quentin Rufin yeah this only really works because of Resil. In Vanilla it’s usually not ideal to run a 10 man pain train setup because if your healers get Silenced or CC’d your FC can die in a global. Flag Carriers in Vanilla can’t tank damage forever like they can with Resil. It’s all about kiting It’s also important to remember that the map doesn’t show the EFC’s position in Vanilla. In TBC+ the EFC is marked on your map so you always know where he is. In Vanilla, good flag carriers are constantly juking/faking out the enemy offense, slipping away and making them lose track of him
