People always talk about the spiral of a notebook getting in the way when lefties write on the right page, which is true (I'm left handed) but would that also happen to right handed people on the left page?

Megan Is Awesome it does xD but I guess you do write more on the right side of a notebook since you may not always need the backside and would mostly start a new topic on a new (= right) page.

Woo I’m a lefty!! Okay so I always use spiral notebooks the other way so the binding is on the right. Also I can’t stand holding the pencil in that tripod grip or whatever it’s called. The only thing that I don’t know is using brush pens while being left handed because it never seems to work for me

Brush pens as a lefty can be a little difficult to get used to. Using a hard brush (like the Tombow Fudenosuke Hard) tends to be a lot easier than using one of the softer brushes, especially starting out. Between my own personal experience and that I've gained by hearing what other lefties have to say, most use sidewriting for brush pens. Make sure you keep the pen at a low angle to the paper and you may have to rotate your paper for different strokes. I actually turn my paper upside down to do the crossbars of letters like t and the descenders of g, j, y, etc.

Thank you to make this nice video, I have been training my left hand for 10 years. Because of grip measuring and other happens made me notice that becoming ambidexter work out my tendovaginitis. My left hand was stronger than right hand, and it is bigger. My shoulder to wrist was in the bandage when I was in high school. I thought it is strange that other students can write by one hand. Lately, a sustainable natural clinic dentist checked my body and told me that, he thinks my mother was very busy and holded me the baby too strong, and the spine got pressure. I do not hate about that, but sometimes thinks if my parents was less busy, my skeleton was right and baby me naturally used my left hand more. Now the writing is last (and long years) task for my left hand, I am glad to find this video.

Leftie here! Underwriting as a lefty doesnt work for everyone, I get really bad hand fatique from underwriting with my left hand even with the rotating of the paper. Another alternative is to do non-hook-hand overwriting; you overwrite but you ALSO rotate the paper just like with underwriting (but you rotate it at the opposite direction of course). This way I am able to write for longer times without hand fatique sitting in my sofa with my notebook on my lap, which is something I would not be able to do if I did underwriting. Also fountain pens! Fountain pens like LAMY Safari and Pilot Metropolitan work really well for me. The Platinum Carbon Desk Pen is great for drawing as well and is inexpensive.

I'm a lefty and Japanese Pens are expensive in India and so are fountain pens. I normally use gel pens so I would recommend the Uniball Eye pens bcuz 1. They comfortable to hold 2. The ink dries really fast (like under 4-5 seconds). 3. Let's say you did a mistake, and you will obvs use a whitener/correction pen, you will let the ink dry for a minute or so and then you'll re-write whatever you were writing. If you put your hand on the part where you wrote over the whitener, the ink won't smudge unlike other pens. I really love these pens and would obvs recommend for my fellow lefties! (sorry for my bad English)

I'm left handed and finding a pen that works well has been crazy. However, I just picked up a Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen with fine nib. I haven't even had it 24 hours. I am really liking it. It takes such a light touch on the paper. And the ink seems to dry pretty quickly. And for about $12, definitely worth a try.

no, you are not! I write at a 80-90° angle too, vertical. Therefore I have also no problem to write completely upside down, what seems very magical for some people :D

I am left handed and since I write without a “hook” my hand does not rub over what I write. The paper’s left edge is parallel to my arm.

Nicholle Dominique Yes, but for left-handed people it’s worse, when I’m writing from left to right, my hand is rubbing on the freshly printed ink or lead. This smears your writing and gets on your hand, which is a mess and can get on your clothes, etc.

I’m a lefty, i learned to write by turning my paper sideways so i can write from top to bottom and right to left. Also got a ink pen for left handed people they where in the days expensive so my gran had it engraved with my name in a subtle way. They tried to steal my pen because it was my favorite color red and silver. So when she wrote with it it scratched the paper i knew she had it so said she picked my pen. The teacher said i was paranoid and that girl has more money than you do! I told him well it can be but still its my pen, and i want it back and could proof it. I asked him to look on the lower rim of the top case of the pen and say what was there. My name came out. The only thing I couldn’t to that easy was cutting with scissors so learned it right handed. Now i have one. Now its more common but i 50 and had to learn to write right handed too, but they couldn’t read what i had written so gave up and i could write as pleased.

We recommend pencils with wider grip sections so you can learn how to hold the pencil properly and ergonomically. Uni Alpha Gel Mechanical Pencil is a good option: www.jetpens.com/Uni-Alpha-Gel-Mechanical-Pencils/ct/78

  • @Tippel3

if your school forces you to "hook writing", go elsewhere!! It's the worst to do and many leftys get chronical problems because it damages the wrists, some even need to stop studying because of irreversible problems and pain. Develop your own style, underwriting is the best but sidewriting is also okay, you just need to use very fast drying pens that don't smudge. Also why do they care what notebooks you use? Instead of just turning your notebook, try spiralbound notebooks for leftys. They have the spiral on the other side, so that the wholes are still on the correct side if you need to put the sheets in a ringbinder afterwards. No one will notice the difference at this point! Also topbound ringsbooks shouldn't be a problem.

One thing I haven't heard addressed is the paper quality. "Best quality" paper tends to be super smooth and shiny, which makes no logical sense. It makes all pens smear. I'm convinced the paper absorbency and texture is up to 50% of the problem.

These pens are expensive for us.In our country we use normal ball point pens for 0.11 dollars And expensive ones for 2.14 or 5.35 But if i were to buy a pen for example uni signo premier 207 it would cost around 9.25 dollars which is quite expensive according to our country and If the ink runs out we have to buy a new one so its nit worth the money
