Riffing with Modes part 1 (Ionian) found here: • Riffing With Modes #1:...
Dorian is capable of way more than just jazz and funk. This video teaches how to write riffs with the Dorian mode, and also how to arrange those riffs into a full song. We explore a little bit of modal interchange, by borrowing from the parallel minor key, but mostly focus in on the 2nd mode.
Don’t take me too seriously when I say that dad rock isn’t “too complicated or insightful”. I’m generalizing, for better or for worse.
FAQ:
Q: Why does your song sound like “Turn The Page”?
A: Because the chord progression for that song is the same- except it is in E dorian instead of D, and this song the chord changes every measure instead of every two. Also he sings the lyric "There I go", and I sing the lyric "There he goes"
Q: Why does your song sound like Metallica?
A: Because I’m trying to sound like James Hetfield
Q: Why does your song sound like Bon Jovi’s “Wanted: Dead or Alive”?
A: Because it’s played on an acoustic guitar, the tonal center is D, and I bend the minor third into that twangin territory.
Q: Why does your song sound like Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love A Bad Name”?
A: Because of that big major IV chord in the prechorus that resolves to the tonic. It’s heard in the prechorus of both songs.
Q: Why does your song remind me of “Norweigan Wood” by the Beatles?
A: Because the pick-strumma-strumma in 6/8 is similar to the pick-strumma-strumma in that song.

I’m a music theory professor and no, I would not fail you for saying you’re in the key if D Dorian. The key (pun intended) is the composers intention. Odds are Bach and Mozart wouldn’t have thought in D Dorian, rather D minor, with the G being a V/VII (even that’s not right, but I’m still pre-coffee this morning), but for modern songwriting D Dorian is fine.

Maybe we shouldn't allow people to say "major key" because after all the major scale is just the seventh mode of the Dorian scale! Not fair to Dorian. No need to impose that arbitrary distinction. If you're in "A minor" but your tonic chord is a D minor chord, then let's call the key D Dorian, it makes more sense!

Jake this was a fantastic video. I love how you take complicated things and make them simple and applicable. For me this was a lesson of not only how to use dorian for composition; but also song arrangement and how to get different sounds and textures to work together. I love the writing with modes series, I have learned a lot. Thank you.

This was seriously great. Idk why KZread recommended a two year old video but it was just what I needed right now. I don’t even “like” the tone/timbre/quality of dad rock, at all, but it’s perfectly simplistic for an example & explanation of basic songwriting. Terrific execution dude, it sounded great.

I love seeing you implement the modes in non-traditional ways, like you were saying with Dorian usually being jazzy or funky. I hope you make a cool melodic song for Phrygian instead of the typical metal stuff you hear! Awesome video, and I hope the next one comes out sooner!!!!

Jake. I’ve only just come across your lessons in recent days. After playing guitar for 30 years on and off I’ve only ever learned songs I liked to play using tab and heaps of time, never really understanding why it sounds so good. I’ve learned more in 3 days than I have in 30 years thanks to you and more than that, getting excited because I’m beginning to understand music! The way you explain it has just clicked with me, thanks so much! This particular episode made me laugh a few times, the Taco Bell one lol. But the little clip you made was so funny overlaying Jame’s mouth...haha. The sample itself was great. If James ever gets laryngitis you might be getting a call 😜 If that fails I’m sure radio would take you on for sure. Keep up the great work 👍

The idea of if you’re in dorian or aeolian mentioned at the end I think is funny considering that aeolian was originally just considered an altered version of dorian back in the medieval period with early Gregorian modes. So I’d say that the idea of using dorian with aeolian borrowed chords is more accurate to the original concept of the modes.

  • @clausion

    @clausion

    2 жыл бұрын

I didn't know that. I mean aeolian altered version of dorian. Very interesting, but with a lot of sense. Now I can explain myself why some songs using dorian it seems old, maybe even medieval to me, but never for aeolian.

Man, I tell you... I have never seen someone explain how to come up with a song in simple steps like this. Writing out and taking the time to explain how you came to the final riff, is absolutely impressively done. Easy to follow, and explaining the "why" you chose 6/8, what it sounds like, some characteristics you went for, it really makes the writing process easier when you have in mind what you want to evoke. I've seen hundreds of videos of people "cutting to the chase" and not really taking the time to explain it all as thoughtfully as you did, and it is extremely valuable. I hate bell notifications usually even from channels I love, but I can't not now. That's just too impressive to ignore. Thanks so much for taking the time!
