Writing and composing riffs with Phrygian is ripe ground for growing dark, doomy, and chaotic metal riffs. This video explores some compositional options, including modulations, odd time signatures, overlapping meters, and poor attempts at choral arrangement.
The basis of this song is a rhythm constructed from morse code. A note to the attentive- I did not completely honor or respect the resting pattern, instead, I used the rhythmic pulses to direct the rhythm of my riff. If you were to try to reverse engineer my rhythm just by listening to it, it would be quite difficult considering the rests are smudged a bit.

Heh... I also watch Early Music Sources, having an interest in early music. Frankly, there's some wild stuff there, when you bring it to modern times. Like the chromaticisms of Carlo Gesualdo (and other chromatic Italian madrigalists), and the fluid sense of meter caused by making the music subordinate to the words.
By the way, Jake, I wanted to thank you for making these videos. I don't play guitar, I play the piano (okay, a midi keyboard) but you would not believe how your videos broadened my understanding of music and composing as a whole. I now consider options and possibilities I would not have even thought possible a few months back. I bought your poster, too, obviously, and it helps me as a little reminder. It also looks great on my wall.
It goes without saying you are very good at guitar and music theory. But I am still so impressed with your delivery. You speak so clearly. No “um” fillers like so many music teachers on KZread. Keep up the great work!
"Falsobordone" sounds like something excruciatingly painful that the Soprano family would do to you if you didn't pay up.
I kinda figured that the inclusion of the "i love you" and barney Latin were just a way of showing that it's not what you say so much as how you say it that defines the impact it will have. "I love you" in major is cute "I love you" in Phrygian is psychotic. Kinda like my ex.
@robinchesterfield42
3 жыл бұрын
Another good example--have you ever heard "I Will Always Love You" (by Whitney Houston) in a minor key? It goes from "We can't be together, but I wish you well" into basically "I CAN'T _LIVE_ WITHOUT YOU! DON'T GO AWAY, IT WILL END MY LIFE!"
A few years back I wrote a song where the verse uses Morse code to dictate pitch rather than rhythm, creating a "random" oscillation of two notes in each chord. The simple assignment of an eighth note for each dot/dash with an eighth rest to separate letters was simple, but the length of the message required a 3-measure cycle of 4+4+6.
When you mentioned adding the distorted organ, I felt so glad to own a B9 pedal.

Literally cannot stop watching your videos. It would be super interesting if you explored some modern Black Metal or even DM? Svartidauði use a lot of the same chords all the time, I thought they used flat twos, but according to Ooolimo it's F#m(b6,b9). It has a wild, dissonant tone that sounds brutal but sort of happy a bit, actual black metal. Not to even to speak of someone like Krallice or Deathspell or even Ulcerate.

You're a genius! I love your videos, it's what I have been looking for for so long. You make everything easy to understand. Thank you!
Cool video, you're a good composer, performer and teacher. Keep up the good work Would be good to get a video on the grey areas between composing and performing. What I'm getting at is 'original' band vs cover band, and does that make you 'less of a musician', but then theres classical musicians who rarely play their own music. In the classical world there's more of a distinction between performer and composer, yet I'm sure all good classical composers were reasonable performers. And then you have eletronic music, a friend of mine is an up-and-coming dj, the music snob in me want's to cast shade, but he's creating music, and performing it live, yet the lines between composing and performing become somewhat blurry. Would love to hear your take on the whole thing, maybe do a vlog with someone like Adam Neely.

Maybe a dumb ass question. But in the term "odd time signature" Does *odd* mean un-even numerical, or strange. Because to me, 10/8 would be a pretty "odd" time signature, so I personally view it as the latter option. Is there an "official" definition?

I view the term as referring to uncommon time signatures, i.e. ones that aren't 4/4, 3/4, 6/8, etc. 3/4 has a non-even count, but it's so commonly used that I wouldn't call it odd.
