    What was that you sprayed on top of the wrap? Was it a soapy water? Also, on my truck there are little specks of chipping towards the front of my hood near the grill and some of those spots are a little rusted. Would I have to sand those out, prime them, and then paint them before applying the wrap to the hood?

  • @TunersCanvas

    Hey! I sprayed a baby shampoo mixture to help reduce scratches during squeegee. The vinyl will show all of those rock chips if you don’t at least sand and prime before wrapping. You can go as far as paint but at least primer would be ideal.

    Hey. Thanks. The combination of a clean surface, adhesive backing on the film, and the installation method of balancing the tension evenly over the panel without any heated stretch all allow the film to do what it’s designed to do. The technology is impressive.

    I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT pickup and I want to paint it gloss black. I'm thinking of doing a flat or semi-flat black carbon fiber wrap on the hood, but I've never don one before. Is that unrealistic? I'm also thinking about adding some sort of hood scoops later. How difficult is that to do once the hood has been wrapped?

  • @TunersCanvas

    @TunersCanvas

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey. Sounds like a fun project. You definitely have some options with the hood. You could just place the carbon look vinyl over the entire hood and have it offset the gloss black paint. You could paint the hood gloss black and then add the vinyl in the center of the hood, between body lines or something like a wide stripe. Adding a scoop after would not be a concern. Line it up on top of the vinyl and drill, cut, or stick as required. In the event you need to remove or replace the vinyl the scoop would then need to come off.

    What temperature do you heat these foils with?,what temperature is your gun set to?

  • @TunersCanvas

    @TunersCanvas

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello. When heating the vinyl I place the heat temperature to max, which I believe is about 1100 degrees F. There is a Low and High fan speed setting that I switch depending on where I am heating. Idea is to keep moving and not stall in place as the vinyl doesn’t need much heat to become very pliable. Hope that helps.

    Some vinyls do have an aggressive initial tack when it touches the surface. I used the Avery Dennison SW series which has a very light tack at first touch and then locks in place once pressed with squeegee.

    I tried warpping with 3m satin dark grey and it was nowhere near as easy to move around like that when i took the protective part off ( I noticed yours was even able to slide on areas). Mine stuck on pretty much right away. Is this because of the brand or something else?

  • @TunersCanvas

    @TunersCanvas

    Жыл бұрын

    Avery Dennison vinyl is designed to have a low ‘initial tack’ which allows it to be repositioned easier and not stick until pressure is applied with squeegee. I’ve heard the 3M vinyls have a high ‘initial tack’ and will want to stick more aggressively on contact. I have only ordered Avery for my wrap projects because of this. Temperature and humidity I think will play a factor on this as well regardless of vinyl brand.

  • @Dnasty1

    @Dnasty1

    @@TunersCanvas oh ok makes sense. The way I saw you move would have been impossible with 3m. Seems like Avery is much easier to work with because of this. Is there any downside to low initial tack vinyl?

  • @TunersCanvas

    @TunersCanvas

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Dnasty1 I am not versed enough with the different materials to know what, if any, downside could be in play. My research all pointed to Avery as a great beginner film for ease of use and quality. However 3M is also a strong player in the vinyl game so it’s not to say they are less quality, just a different install tactic.

    HOW WIDE WAS THE HOOD?

  • @TunersCanvas

    @TunersCanvas

    Жыл бұрын

    Sorry it took a day to respond, measuring the hood, it is approx 65” wide and 46” front to back, slightly exaggerated to provide a little extra cushion incase you’re using it to reference a vinyl order. If so, shoot for a 5’x6’ cut.

  • @TunersCanvas

    @TunersCanvas

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Marco-te3mp Typically most rolls are standard 60” wide. The number of feet in length is what will make up the difference for your hood. The 60” covers the distance from the grille to the windshield and then the number of feet in length you order the roll will cover the distance from fender to fender across the hood. Since it is typically available by the foot, you’d want at minimum 6’ in length, even 7’ if you’d like some extra room to work with. Does that help?

    I'm flabbergasted at the vinyl prices. That's crazy expensive. $600 for a bit more than a hoods worth? Im thankful to have a friend in the paint business, and could definitely save some $. I get that paint doesn't peel off for a redo, but that's probably the way I go. Half the cost, and better in my opinion... I wonder what markup is on vinyl these days? Oracal is like 88 cents a square foot for high performance. I'm dumbfounded by the price.

  • @TunersCanvas

    Interesting. Did you price out a local job to have your hood wrapped for $600? I ordered a full 75’ roll of film for a little over $600 but that will cover the entire truck and likely have some left over. Paint is definitely durable for the long haul as vinyl will break down over time and become difficult to remove, but that’s a number of years after being installed.

    @@TunersCanvas that's what I get for assuming! Ok, 75ft x 5ft? That's much more acceptable. I have done vinyl for almost 30 years, but was looking at the $ it costs for wrap jobs these days. Seems it's a lucrative business. I wrench for a living, but thinking of getting back doing this full time. I was astonished at the price per a previous comment, but thought that was for the hood only. I was thinking " where's the $ in the install then?"... 😂 Wells for the color chosen and and full roll, the perspective has changed once again! Thanks for taking the time to break me off that info. Nice install btw, looks perfect!

  • @TunersCanvas

    Hey Mark. Vinyl seems to have originated from business graphics that would be applied similarly and provides company branding. It has now transitioned into a market of personalization and/or paint protection. Vinyl offers significant options to customize the appearance of a vehicle at a fraction of the time and money it would take to replicate with paint. It’s evolution of the industry, which like most technologies, isn’t always accepted by all.
