Glad it wasn’t worse. Mine not so much. Dometic fridge caused mine. Fire Chief said it was the fridge also. I lost everything. Look at the ammonia tank. If it’s rusted then the metal failed from the inside. Had an attorney look that handles class action lawsuits against Norcool and Dometic. He looked at the pictures of mine and said without a doubt the cause. There was a lawsuit against the manufacturers but it was thrown out. I believe it has been resubmitted.

We were going to do that conversion also. Waited too long. These types of refrigerators systems should not be used. It doesn’t matter how you power them. It’s just a matter of time. Ours was from 2010 but we purchased the trailer in 2020 from a dealer who went through the unit and found no faults or issues in the system. We used it for about a year and a half.

Thanks Kevin. Very good presentation! I have a Norcold N842, vintage 2006. Last summer, it would not keep cool with the propane. However, with the electric switched on it worked fine. At the time, we were traveling cross country. We heard about JC Refrigeration in Shipshewana IN. We made it an appointment with them and they replaced our cooling coil behind our fridge. Their coils are oversized, and now our fridge is very efficient. We do a lot of dry camping and prefer the absorbent fridge. However, the compressor models are gaining popularity with RVers, especially if you have solar (and getting away from the hazards of propane). Your video has made me feel more comfortable about switching to the compressor models. I’m forwarding this video lesson to my friends.

My brother had a 1200 Norcold in his RV(2008) and about 3 years ago his Norcold 1200 leaked all the amonia out and of course it quit. No fire, it just died. A new one was around 4,000.00. So he went to Lowes or Home Depot and bought a Magic Chef 10 cu' residential refrigerator for around 3-400.00, and It worked great for about a year then quit. He was running it on a modified sine wave inverter and the owners manual for the frig says you must use a pure sine wave inverter if running on an inverter. So he bought another one and a pure sine wave inverter and hasn't had any more issues. My wife and I have one just like it currently being used in our garage that will replace the 2003 10 cu' Domestic in our RV (which still works great). We run our Domectic frig on a modified sine wave inverter while traveling. Those proteng fire suppression systems would be a good idea for engine bay(diesel pusher), electric bay, and refrigerator compartment. They aren't cheap that's for sure but then neither is losing everything you've got. Thanks for posting. Found your channel after seeing a Nomadic Fanatic video today from a while back about how you helped him trouble shoot his Onan generator that was running at the wrong frequency. Safe travels.

@@ktoutdoor 3000 watt ? You must be going to run your entire coach off of it I run our 10cu' Domectic off a 400/750 watt modified sine wave, but that's the only thing we run on an inverter. You must have a big solar/battery bank. Nice. I've got a lot of catching up to do on your videos. Thanks for posting them.

I have not read all the comments but for your information usually all cooling units are topped off with hydrogen at 400lbs. pressure. I used to rebuild cooling units but that was many moons ago. The chemical in the unit that crystalizes is called dichromate. It is yellow.

Ugh, saw a fire like that before on a small tag, those poor folks lost the whole rig though. When our Demented Dometic pissed its ammonia a few years ago (and I saw the prices for a rebuild/replacement!), we made a trip to our local Home Depot. For around $400 we wheeled out this 10.1cf Magic Chef (matched our stove & microwave!). Even had a couple beefy guys from the store come out in the parking lot and help me lift it into the wall! It fit damn near perfectly, near doubled the capacity, runs quietly, temps are always consistent and I NEVER have to look for LED function lights”. BEST investment we ever made in the old girl (along with a 3K PSW inverter) Nice helpful vid as usual, thanks!

This is the EXACT reason I replaced my Norcold 1200 with a Samsung Rf18 three years ago. Besides my bride LOVES the larger box and I love the quicker cooling and my hard frozen ice cream!!! The Samsung, with 18 cubic feet of storage, fit in the same hole as my Norcold 1200 by dropping the bottom shelf under the old unit about 5 inches. Width and depth were exactly the same. And only ONE pound difference in weight.

Is that a 1200RLM? For one thing you don’t know how well it’s been maintained in regards to running off level time and time again if the rig was purchased used. It’s acumulative damage for doing so. Your explanation is correct. ARP helps but do the research on them and see how hot they are still allowed to get before shitting down?

Kevin, take a look at the boiler, that’s where the fire started. The boiler insulation is all but gone. The flames drafted straight up where they circulate around the condenser causing the most damage. I wonder if the thermal safety sensor failed and was bypassed? At 2:40 I can see the recall kit but I don’t see the sensor or remnants of it connected to the boiler.

I just visited the Proteng booth at the quartzsite RV show. He told me it would be about $600 to install their kit. They apparently don't sell to the DIY crowd. It might be a great option for some, but that's about half the price of an upgrade to a new system, which I would probably do instead since I already have degraded cooling performance.
