Ronnie and Allen probably wrote/starting working on simple man in 1971-1972

In my humble opinion, one of the strongest debut albums any band from the classic rock era ever made. Pronounced gave birth to Skynyrd classics that were still being hammered out on the set list night in and night out some 40+ years later. This album spawned such songs as (I Ain't The One), (Tuesday Gone), (Simple Man), (Gimme Three Steps), (Things Going On), (Mississippi Kid), and the legendary (Free Bird) to name a few. A couple of little known facts about the album are the band was told they needed one more song to complete the album. So Ronnie suggested Simple Man to producer Al Kooper of Blood, Sweat, & Tears fame. After playing it for Kooper at Studio One in Doraville, Ga. where the album was recorded, Al Kooper said "we're not recording that. It's a stupid song that don't mean nothing." But the band thought otherwise, so front-man, band leader, and all around tough guy Ronnie Van Zant walked over to Kooper, took him by the arm, walked him out to the studio parking lot, opened the driver side door to his Bentley, put him in the car and slammed the door shut. Ronnie then leaned in through the driver side window and said, "go on now Al. We'll call you when we're done cutting it." Asked about the incident with Ronnie later, Kooper remarked only "I feared him." A few weeks after sessions at Doraville's Studio One ended, Ronnie called Al Kooper in New York and told him they had another song for the album that he wanted to record right now because he liked it just as it was and he was afraid the arrangement might change too much before they went back into the studio for their second album. Kooper booked the band studio time in NYC and flew them up. He would later say the minute he heard the opening notes he knew the band had a top 10 hit. The song they recorded that day was Sweet Home Alabama, which Kooper talked the band into holding in reserve to have as a major song on what would become their second studio album, "Second Helping." So it's feasible Alabama could've also ended up on the debut album as well if the band had not chosen to hold it in reserve to use on Second Helping.

They move you smoothly ,then take you way up , then nestle you back down so nicely. Powerful band. RIP Skynyrd. Music cannot forget this band.

My sister and her oldest son had a special connection through music. He passed away just six weeks after she did, we played this at his funeral. They were one of his favorite bands. We played “Wild Horses” by The Rolling Stones at my sisters funeral. (His mother) Whenever I hear either song, I still tear up.

I Can't get thru this without crying. I do love Lynyrd Skynyrd. As a 60 yr old grandmother, I have shared this with my 36 yr old incarcerated son. It speaks to my values.

You hit the nail on the head when you said "...real man...". This is a beautiful simple song, excellently executed.

This song will be played as my ashes are scattered. I always connected with this song because I'm just a Simple Man. I never needed money or fame to enjoy life. I find pleasure in the simple things.

This will play at my funeral also. It is how I was raised in a blue collar town. In fact, many of the songs from Skynnyrd was just the way we grew up. Ronnie was a MASTER songwriter, miss him and the others.

Every one wants to hear Free Bird, but A Simple Man has always been my favorite Skynard song. The message that it delivers syncs perfectly with my personal philosophy. Be a simple kind of man. Life is only as complicated as we let it become.

Lynyrd Skynyrds lead singer (Ronnie Van Zant) suffered from a common throat problem that would cause him to lose his voice and they often had to cancel because of this problem. In some of the old videos you can tell his voice is gone, especially, the set that was recorded at “The Old Grey Whistle Test”. You can really tell at that gig that his voice is gone. Ronnie was actually gonna quit as lead singer, write their tunes, and manage them. His replacement was gonna be his younger brother Johnny Van Zant, the singer of the current band. Great reaction video!! I’m a new subscriber and I really enjoyed this video.

Oh there are tons of Skynyrd songs you can do. I think "Gimmie Three Steps" is frigging hilarious in addition to being musically really great, some really great lyrics there.

I thought it was just me that thought this song was hilarious! It’s one of my fav Skynyrd song. That bass was on point.

I love this song. The first time I heard it, it was like a gut punch to get my shit together. Life is not hard if you focus on the most basic, simple issues. Do not get lost in the weeds. That was in 1973. This one still hits to this day.

I'll tell you something about this singer, Ronnie VanZant. He wrote the lyrics to this and other songs. He never wrote the lines on paper. "If you have to write it down, it means you can't remember it. If you can't remember it, is it really any good?"

I grew up on their music in the 70s. I love it when people today hear their music/songs and can't believe how old their stuff is.

I sang this to all 3 of my sons when they were little. It still touches me so deeply!!!!

Everytime I hear this song , when he sings ",Don't forget son , there's someone up above" I always point my fingers toward the heavens , and you did the exact same thing! We're on the same wave length.👌🤗

It's not that Ronnie had a bad performance with Free Bird live it's that he was holding back so much. Ronnie isn't a vocal powerhouse he's just a man with a lot of heart and soul. I promise you will love this song live.

Brother Ronnie, (RIP), was known for doing his concerts bare footed and he never wrote down the lyrics to his songs, he just remembered them. A true artist in every sense of the word. PEACE!

Proud to be a distant cousin of the Van Zant Brother's and their dad. Ronnie was a true genius of a musician. RIP

I've heard this was written after one of the bands grandmother's passed away recalling her words to him. They changed it to a mother perhaps just lyrically it fit. Who ever she was she had great wisdom and advice.

Read up on Ronnie. He was a lyrical genius. Of course the band were all musical geniuses. Ronnie was an amazing man that I’ve had a heart tie with since I was 11. Now I also have one for his brother a wonderful, selfless gentle man who has the Holy Spirit all over him- Johnny. My loves❤️

As far as vocals, remember, this was loooooong before auto tune.

Skynyrd always ended their concerts with Freebird his voice was strained. This song Simple man was written by Ronnie after a conversation that he had and Gary had with their grandmothers .

This is another group that I grew up listening to. Ronnie Vanzant was the driving force behind this band. He was there leader on and off stage. I loved his approach to singing lead vocals. He didn't jump around and act like a fool and when it was time for the other members of the group to shine he would step back and let them have the spotlight. Curtis Lowe is a song I would like you to react to. I'm a 70's guy and they were a 70's band. I cried when there plane crashed in 1977 because I knew I would never hear Ronnie's voice live again. 🤘🎸🇺🇸

This band always makes me think about my grandmother, she gave me this talking too!!!

He was a great singer for what he sang. He knew what he could sing. He was the perfect singer for what he sang. It was real.

This song is beyond deep. People pull out of it what they want or need but great artist leave the meaning up to the individual.

my wife dedicated this song to our son the night before his 18th bday. he was killed the next day on his bday by a drunk driver. this song makes me cry everytime i hear it. so, thanks for the tears my man

This is the song my son wanted played for the mother-son dance at his wedding reception. He grew up listening to this kind of music and still loves it...The ballad of Curtis Lowe was one of the best ever!! I was raised in south MS. My dad and both of my grandfathers were cotton farmers (sharecroppers). All my brothers and I worked hard ( was the only girl out of six kids). I learned life skills that most younger people do not know about. My dad took me everywhere with him when he could. I know some of the most awesome men that ever lived and a lot of them had darker skin than me and they would all kill a sob to protect this little white girl... My parents raised me to respect everyone no matter what their background. The south is not what what you see in the media. All y'all are welcome to my "neck of the woods" anytime.

These lyrics are as thoughtful and intelligent as you will find anywhere... personal yet universal. Humble yet profound. This band was one of the biggest success stories and also one of the worst tragedies in the music industry at that time. I've been a Skynyrd fan for 40 years.

When you follow your passions you become great at it and that’s how you make a living off of it. Lynyrd Skynyrd will live on forever. R.I.P. Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Allen, Jojo, Leon, Billy and Ed✌🏼❤️🤘🏼

Gimmir three steps is a lot of fun

I consider having grown up during this incredible era of music, when creativity and providing us with the most important messages our young minds would ever listen too and absorb, was an absolute gift. It was song's such as this one that left an indelible imprint on my psyche and 50 + years later, it remains. There were a great many other bands that provided that same gift. I am so thankful that I took those words to heart, as I know many others did. I was also blessed to have seen the original line up before the plane crash that took Ronnie's (among others) life and tragically altered the lives of others. I can only hope that these words can have the same lasting impact on other young listeners as they did on so many of us. They will only be better and happier people if they do. As my own mother taught me, life is about the simple things.

For me this song is about a mother on her deathbed, telling her only song the most important lessons to take with him. I wish my mother could have had this talk with me, but that wasn't in our cards. When I listen to this song, or play it on my guitar, it tears open an old wound, but sometimes you gotta let an old sore get some air on it before it'll heal. From one Southerner to another: glad you reviewed this song, and glad I found this channel.

My favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song. Hands down. There's so much more to them than just Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama.

When you saw Freebird Live, that was the last song of an entire set on stage. The fact that they played as well as they did was impressive.

I've been fortunate to see them live 3 times over the years (with Johnny, RIP Ronnie) and they're fantastic live.

Skynyrd has so many but some other life lesson goodies are " Needle and a Spoon", "Gimme Back My Bullets" and "That Smell". Enjoy.

Being 62 now and raising 3 boys in the Texas farmlands, I am beyond impressed seeing how this song impacts you, just like it does the rest of us. My own mother (Rest her soul) gave me this same message in 1971 when we were very poor. I listened, and I passed it on to my boys. I find peace in knowing my sons will do the same. It's a message, it's a ballad, It's a moral culture. Those that tear up actually get it.

I would always recommend listening to studio for audio evaluation, for the most part, live should be added in later for the visual. In most cases the live distorts the audio.

Great vocals and lyrics, yes. But you can still hear the power of Skynrd's guitars even on this studio version. Another real ly powerful song live.
