The SSCS5's were the speakers that got me into hi-fi over a year ago. I still listen to them almost every day. They are good enough for me to have second thoughts to upgrading. Set them up with a sub and you are good to go. Have 3 pairs now, no regrets.

Jay has done a great job at describing these speakers especially when he mentioned poor recordings vs audiophile recordings played through the speakers, I have not heard anyone say that before . 👌🏼. KZread reviewers are like speakers they reveal details differently and I must say that Jay has a balanced "frequency response" and "detailed at the top". 😁

Bought for $88. Less than the cables driving my Kef LS50's. In an A/B test the difference far less than I could have imagined. I'm shocked! I love my LS50's and these things absolutely hold their own. Yes the LS50's have better bass, but the mid's holy crap. Best $88 I've spent on audio, ever!

A pair just came in today from Amazon. My quick review: The bass is strong but the words I want to used to describe the bass is a bit slight "muddy" or "sloppy." Sound stage is pretty impressive for this little thing. Imaging is pretty darn good. Details is not bad. Mid range is good, but I didn't think it's as good as Jay's impression. Highs are good, but I wouldn't use the word "impressive" to describe it personally. But it is smooth in the sense that it's not fatiguing as described by Jay. Built quality is of course, no surprise, lo-fi range as Jay had described it. I paid $94USD including tax for it from Amazon. The sound:price ratio is AAA, very hard to beat. I originally brought it because Tujin (Sorry if I misspelled Jay's friend's name) joked that at this price he would horde it, so hey why not for less than $100 bucks. However, I will be returning it, only because I had expected more based on this review (Jay and Tujin's initial impression and Jay's subsequent impressive really hyped me up and set my expectations sky high, so when I got it, everything just crumbled). The use cases I think this would be an excellent fit for is if you have a teenage or college bound audiophile child, that will likely endure some serious wear and tear. Or have this as an audiophile's garage speaker. Or. . .if you're just getting into Hi-Fi, this is ultra low risk.

I got mine for $85 at best buy 3 years ago to use with a cheap amazon class-D amp just to have some music in my kitchen. I was shocked by how great they sounded, I moved them to my living-room to test them with my more powerful Class A/B integrated amp and they quickly replaced my Elac B5s. I am now using them in my smaller home-office room on desktop, and my mind was blown again by how great they sound close up. Usually speakers with this much high frequency detail are hard to listen to close up, but that wasn't the case at all with these.

This is an amazing speaker for the money. Let's be honest, there are a lot of crap speakers around this price point. Hell, there's many speakers which are crap at much higher price points, but these speakers are fabulous. They are so honest to the source and if, like me, you like jazz and small ensemble type music, these speakers are truly eye opening. If you love acoustic guitar, these speakers shine, but also great with brass and woodwind instruments - in fact, even piano sounds really decent. They also have a full sound that defies their cabinet dimensions. As Jay said, their bass is probably their weak point, but then as long as you are not a bass-head, and what bass-head would buy these speakers anyway, they still remain very pleasant to listen to. I suspect a bit of cabinet bracing and acoustic treatment in the interior of the cabinet would be the answer here, just to calm down cabinet resonance. I own an R800i and Concept 500's with a Naim streaming DAC, so a not too shabby rig, and when I tried these Sony's, it was mind blown. Highly recommended for those beginning their HiFi journey, but also excellent for a second system in a bedroom or rumpus room. Bass-heads look elsewhere, but for everyone else these speakers rock!

  • @tbear2327

    @tbear2327

@@peterwood2633 - the Concept 500's are an amazing speaker. They are extremely accurate and neutral if set up properly in a well treated room. What's more, even though they sound perfectly fine being powered by lesser electronics, they do scale extremely well. Power them with high end electronics, especially something with high damping factor and high current, then they can be extremely dynamic. I power mine with tubes, simply because I like the tube sound, but then I also don't listen to highly dynamic music either. Apart from the Willsenton R800i, I also own the Willsenton R8, the Naim Uniti Atom, the Naim Supernait 3 and the Hegel H390 and I would say the Supernait and the H390 are the only amplifiers that can truly get the best out of them and consequently give you all the dynamics you could possibly ask for. See Thomas Stereo YT channel and see what he finally used to power them and you will get a good idea of what I mean. New Record Day YT review as well. Having said this, I haven't heard the Dynaudio's, but all I will say is that anyone who comes to my home and listens to the Concepts are immediately blown away by the huge sound and clarity that these speakers can produce on the end of top notch electronics. BTW, I already owned the 500's well before these reviews were done. I bought them simply because they were the best speaker that I'd ever heard for the money I was willing to spend. In my opinion they compete with other floorstanders worth much more than I paid for them.

The current low price is ... $88 ... a PAIR. There is room for cheap and easy improvements. Like the steel laminate inductor on the woofer, in the crossover. And possibly the sand cast wire wound resistors. And maybe a bit of bracing / damping. I'll bet that an air core inductor on the woofer, will raise the bass quality? Steel laminate/iron core inductors have smearing, due to eddy currents in the metal - it hangs on for quite a while, after the signal drops. It has poly film caps and air core coils on the tweeters, so that's part of why it does well in the treble. But the sand cast resistors have inductance, so replacing those with low/no inductance resistors on the tweeters, could certainly help things be even better.

  • @RennieAsh

Depending on the wattage, they'll probably have negligible inductance. Maybe if it's 10W it'll have a small bit in the audio range, but not a very noticeable effect . Resistors are cheap though, so why not. Pity the speakers are too expensive in Aus

These speakers have been reviewed many times with so much praises! I never really gave it much interest, because I wasn't really into the way they look. Sure it's not all about looks, but hey, sound is paramount, but looks comes second. I have to look at them still and they will live in my living space! But your presentation of these speakers make them look extra tantalizing. The CS5 on those nice stands, damn, pretty sexy I have to say! Jay, have you heard the Edifier R1900T3? Or can you try to source them in the second hand market and compare them to each other? These Eddies are quite well regarded too, tuned by Peter Duminy. They are active. I've had these for a long time as my PC desktop speakers. Wouldn't mind upgrading if the Sony's are considerably better. Please please please make this comparison!!!

btw, my 1'st 'real' hi-fi speakers were s/h Kef Concertos made in 1970's. They had "30 Watts max" cardboard stickers glued to the rears. My flat's living room was larger than the norm' for an average u.k. 1-bedroom flat but whatever amps fed them for 7'ish years, never bought distortion in even at near'painfully high levels, wether with a pair of 15'Watt Quad II monos or a 100'Watt/ch' Yamaha or Marantz amp. I later acquired pair of old original new Wharfdale Diamonds.. (free offer with new Mission CD player) ..rated at 100 watts but the Kef's efficiency rendered them able to reach far higher volume levels of clean undistorted music than the Diamonds could handle. 30'Watt verses 100'Watt recommended amp maximum was meaningless, you'll normally hear awful sound just before too many watts kill a driver or 2, i.m.experience. Wattage ratings seem more of a marketing tool these days. I'm more interested in max' current delivery above wattage in amps, & efficiency for speakers rather than an arbitrary* (*with no efficiency rating) max' wattage recommendation alone given for speakers.

Broke them in on my Marantz 8006 integrated, also used with my Yaqin tube amp and they just sounded ok. Currently relegated to my bedroom hooked to a mid grade Denon AV receiver. They just sound sort of thin to me and ok but nothing special. Can’t be the pairing or the rooms because they are different amps and rooms, could it be I am just used to that very dynamic Klipsch sound? Have a pair of their towers with the dual 8” woofs and then blend in with the tube amp my RP600s… I just don’t get it.

These impressive speakers are around for min 6 years now and I wonder why Hi-end reviewers are so late to realize them :) I've been using the tower version SSCS3 (+1 more woofer & front ported) with Hegel H80 for 3 years. Believe me, these speakers really deserve to be paired with Hi-end amplifiers. Don't crap them out with budget amps. I never go back for much more expensive speakers because they do not definitely perform better. Because I use the tower version, the bass is also flawless thanks to Hegel. That treble refinement? You can't find easily even in $1000 speakers. You can't also see any other reviewers shocked this much for any other speaker models as SSCS3 & SSCS5 relevant to their price point.

Hey friend, I’m also experiencing something that “defies logic” when pairing the SSCS5 with a high end amp and Dac, it’s unbelievable really... but I’m so curious about the towers... do you think they offer the same kind of presentation as the CS5 but with a fuller more bodied sound? There seems to be some people that love the CS5’s but hate the CS3 towers... could you share your experience? Thanks!!

@@rodrigoarias390Hello. As I mentioned they're not driving them with the power these deserve. Tower version is the complete deal. The sound has much more authority and depth. The design also different with front ported which is very important for the bass. You cannot believe how hassle free the bass response: sometimes you're hearing very low bass instances something like someone from upstairs hit their foot very instantly. But of course you can get a grip on them in this level thanks to Hegel's damping factor to master the speakers. You have to test them with higher end stuff and the most budget friendly would be Hegel. Tower version would require more quality power to get mind blowing performance that's why they don't like the sound when compared to the bookshelves which are more easy to drive. In practical, you'd be only paying for high end amplification and nearly nothing for the speaker then close the deal :) please type me back your experiences.

Hey Jay I'm also excited...at least I was excited when these new Sony SSCS5 came into my life. I'm a complete newby so I found myself ordering from Amazon that I had to return. but let me get to the point. After a few weeks of waiting the Gearit braided cables finally arrived to my apartment. I also have the Fosiaudion Q4 headphone amp and the Fosi BT30D. What could go wrong. I have no idea, except that I don't hear anything. I look at videos for hours and hours, go back over them again and again....no sound. Now here is what I think. Those beautiful Gearit cables have a long plug...then go in, but there's about a quarter of an inch...really a little less that's not going into the output, or input...whatever. Could you tell me what do you think, what should I do to make this thing work or go get a ghetto blaster (yes I know I hate that phrase)...I just want to get my 1st hifi system up and running, so I can hear how good these speakers are. So please help.

I just received my pair from Amazon today and I am shocked how they sound! I compared them to my GR- Research NX studio monitors and I can't believe it but I am hearing more detail and musically from the shitty Sony speakers. I don't understand how these cheap speakers are out performing the monitors I have over $1k and hours building. I am using a tube front end with a McIntosh MC300 power amp.

sony is funny. every now and then they just put out a budget unicorn product. in the tuner world, they built something called the xdr-f1hd. it was $99 about ten years ago. they are among the most sensitive fm tuners ever made. they go for about $300 used now. i have a modified upgraded one that cost $500 and worth every penny. i also have a 30 year old wm-d6c walkman pro cassette recorder. they go for up to $1500 on the used market. as others have mentioned, it's worth it just to buy these speakers and throw them in storage until you need them.

I been running these as my rear surround speakers in a 15' x 9' room for about a year powered by a Sony STR DN1080 ATMOS receiver; often pushing 100+ watts into them and they don't even blink. Super clean(but a little bright) treble and mid. The bottom end is punchy and tight. And....they were $88. When I bought them I thought, "How bad can they be? Especially, since Sony is not known for their speakers but, it's a small room and they'll due for now. WOW, was I wrong. I would put these up against nearly any $200 speaker. $79 right now run out and buy 5 pairs as Christmas presents for friends. They won't regret your gift. (My fronts in this room are Q Acoustics 3030i and they play nice together).

I have owned many speakers over the last 20+ years ranging from hundreds of dollars up to $5,000 psb Platinum T6 floorstanders. I just purchased these Sony Core 5 bookshelves on sale for only $86 at Best Buy. These are by far the least expensive speakers I ever owned but WOW, I'm impressed at how good they are! My Target HS60 stands are more than 4X the price. They sound amazing with my Hegel H95 integrated amp and Cary Audio CD player, much more expensive components. As I listen to them I have a huge grin of enjoyment on my face as I think about how good these speakers sound! The price of these is almost criminal and only makes me think about how overpriced and overated most other speakers and audio gear are in general. Sony has indeed made an classic gem of a speaker that performs way over its price!

Jay, thanks for this review. I bought these speakers on Amazon for $73 in July. I was considering having them modified with the GR-Research mod. But decided against it because they sound very good and especially awesome for the price! Modifying them with the GR-Research would ruin the value proposition as is at $73. I don’t have them close to a rear wall, but paired them with a pair of REL T/9i subs. The combination is awesome. The combo is a full range beauty. The Sony shines in the mids and very good at the highs. But it is small and should not be expected to produce bass and sub bass at excellent quality. That is where the RELs really add to the combination. These Sonys are one of my big bargains of 2021 if not The number one bargain of 2021. Below $100 they are a no brained. I have more money in John Darko Amazon doorstops and hockey pucks which I use as component isolation devices than these Sony’s cost!

I was planning on getting a REL T/7x and pairing it with a Wharfedale EVO or an ELAC Uni Fi Reference, but then I stumbled on these :) Do you find that their bass output which might not be that tight gets in the way of the REL's? Do they mate really well or is the REL overkill?

A forum that focuses on measurements only said this: I always look forward to the first few seconds after the speaker plays. Here, I was like "maybe this is not so bad" until another five seconds passed and I said, "man this thing is bright!" It is so bright that if you play music in the dark, you may have to wear sunglasses! It is also muddy to some extent although the brightness gives the impression of detail. On the "good news" side I could not get the woofer to bottom out. This is because it doesn't produce a ton of bass but importantly, it gets so bright and loud in upper registers that you want to turn it down. Since when are these speakers even bordering bright? 🙄

Makes you wonder what speakers Sony could make for $500 +. It seems that Sony have stopped selling hifi in the UK. Apart from headphones and portable Bluetooth speakers, the only hifi products available are; a subwoofer, a Bluetooth turntable and a headphone amp. That's it! I can't believe it. Not even a shitty all-in-one set up. While other companies expand, Sony shrinks. ☹️

I have to start off by saying that after hearing all the hype and positive reviews, I was expecting these speakers to sound good. In no way do I consider myself an audiophile. You could call me an audio aficionado. I listen through what audiophiles would consider a very pedestrian receiver that I have had and loved for almost 30 years. My main listening room measures 14' x 12', wood paneling, carpet, tile ceiling, sofa love seat and recliner. (It would be an excellent room to record in.) So no reflections or ambient sounds created here. I have them about a foot away from the wall and toed in slightly. They more than exceeded my expectations across the board. Much more bass than I was expecting, very detailed midrange and a treble that is crisp but not fatiguing. No need for a subwoofer in this environment, surprisingly. And as far as how they reproduce high quality recordings, this is where I think they shine! I A/B'd these with a set of Klipsch RP-600M and they really held their own.
