Price Paid - $75
Quality - 9.0
For the price, the construction is truly impressive! Everything from the vinyl wrap, which is adhered very well, to the binding posts are all above what I was expecting.
The cabinets also feel solid and well designed and the grills are also much nicer than I was expecting.
Great quality, for the price!
Sound - 9.5
The 5” woofer puts out excellent bass but I preferred the sound when they were pulled away from the wall a little.
The real star of the show is the highs and even the mids we’re anything to shake a stick at.
The highs are detailed and precise, actually reminded me of the tweeters the Klipsch RP series uses.
Again, excellent sounding speakers, especially considering the price point.
MSRP Rating - 9.5
I almost gave them a 10 here. I can’t imagine doing any better, under $200. I would love to set these up and conduct a blind test, comparing them to much more expensive speakers. I bet I could fool a few fellow audio fans out there.
Aesthetics - 9.0
They are pretty basic looking but also have a classy aspect to them, with the grills off.
Pretty compact so they would look just fine in smaller rooms like bedrooms and offices.
Won’t win any beauty pageants but they also won’t embarrass you either.
Price Paid Value - 10
I knew these would get a 10! $75 dollars for a pair of speakers like this is just an absolute bargain!
Who am I kidding, they are an absolute bargain at the MSRP price of $168.
Average Guy HiFi Rating - 47/50 = 94%
Final Thoughts -
These speakers are a prime example of what I love about this hobby and why I started this channel.
Are these the best sounding speakers I’ve ever heard? No.
Are these speakers about as good as you can do for the money? Yes!
Beginners and people with smaller budgets, go grab them!

Dustin, I've had my pair of SS-CS5 speakers for a couple of years now and I thoroughly enjoy them. I first had them pulling the front L-R duty on my budget minded 5.1.2 TV sound system. Since I upgraded to Emotiva towers I moved them to my office with an Aiyima A07 amp thru my PC and added the Equalizer APO app. I am so happy with the audio after bumping up the bass and cutting the very highs with the EQ APO software. They sound just a touch better when I add my Schiit Audio Modi 3+ DAC. Thank you for giving these speakers the high praise they deserve.

@@blazermdx I'm glad to share my somewhat limited audio experience and I am learning more weekly. Watching folks like You and the CheapAudioMan, for example and there is so many others, has helped me greatly. Thankfully, good/great quality HiFi does not cost High Dollars anymore. I just wish that more, affordable, HiFi gear would be made here in the USA and I'm sure it is coming. And, I'll share that my experience with Emotiva has been nothing short of great! I am so jealous of you and anyone that has Emotiva electronics in their system. I'm hoping to have a full Emotiva HT system someday. Surely far off, but someday. The three Emotiva speakers and sub I have are what I wish I had long ago. I can't say enough good about my buying products from them. I'm now saving up for a second Emotiva sub or B1+ speakers. Take care and have a great day!

For someone just getting into audio this is a great system, especially for under $100 mark. I recently purchased a pair used for $75 to use on my desktop to replace the Polk rt15 which I wasn't that happy with. And yes Sony was never known for great speakers, except for a couple of high end systems for multi K price. I'm powering them with a Fosi audio bt10 and an Yiama DAC headphone amp and for a desktop they kick ass. Great job shows that you don't have to mortgage your home to get good sound

I just happen to have both of those speakers and they are both excellent speakers. I have the RP-600Ms in my office and the SS-CS5s in my master bedroom. The only real difference is, with the 6" speakers it can fill a larger room better. I think the sound stage on the SS-CS5s maybe a little better. Of course with the 6" woofers you get more bass but the SS-CS5s have plenty of bass for a 4" woofer. I have a sub with both but in a small room you could get by without one. I just like to have that deeper bass capability when listening to music. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the SS-CS5s are the best deal in home audio, period. Even at the regular price.

Im looking at any other 3 way speakers that are bookshelf, and the Moukey 99 on sale for 60 is a little scary too good to be true type thing. Can anyone speak for those? Or any other suggestion? Lol. I have the lsim 705s and suffer from thr same problem. I have dozens of different speakers, dacs, amps, pre , tubes, streamers, etc. ... its a real addiction. I also have the Sony SSCS5, micca , wharfedale 230, emotiva zeros, jbl studio 570s, jamo c601-c607, tried jamo 97ii, elac unifi 5.2 and a lot more. I will tell you I have considered buying diy css criton 2dx but Thomas amd stereo doesn't believe that's a step up. I also have looked at parts express Solstice but I don't know if that's a step up either. I bought a pair of Aperion ribbon tweeters to set on top of the lsim and its a definite upgrade. I am looking at getting the matching center but not sure if I want that center for $600. I'm really having fun enjoying the polks using .. Actually, they shouldn’t take very long to break in. Depending on other speakers you’ve owned/experienced, I wouldn’t totally be surprised that you leaving about them. They sound absolutely excellent for their price point but if you’ve owned more expensive or better built speakers in the past, they might have sounded better than these Sony bookshelves. Example, the Polk R200 that I recently acquired, are definitely a better sounding and built speaker. But the Sony will give them a run for their money, for a fraction of the price. Hopefully you messed with the positioning and the setup a little, and they are now sounding better.

Not bad at all for the price and looks ! I personally hear a big difference from your comparison to the klipsch. Klipsch has great base and a lot more clarity from music to words, while the Sony sounds a little more shouty or squackie to me.... in other words definitely more midrange definitely on the bright side for me. Having said all that, I do not dislike them they really hold their own even when compared to an iconic speaker brand like klipsch ! And of course let’s not forget the Sony price point, if you’re on a budget this is a good speaker! Thank you for the review and what I thought to be a great presentation and comparison, I’ve subscribed.

I bought 2 pairs of these and for the money they sound sooooooo good. I played SADE's music and OMG. I thought I bought real expensive $500 to $1000 speakers and I was powering it with my Emotiva BasX A2 amp and the Emotiva PT1 DAC/preamp and it held so good and didn't get tiring with the ears. I can't believe I got these each time for under $100. Worth it Even at Hight Levels this Speaker does pretty good. I was Playing Billy Idols "Rebel Yell" on Streaming with Tidal 192 kHz 24 bit and it sounded like a Concert. This speaker kicks ass for what it is and I have my listening room set up in my Kitchen. I think any Entry Level should start with this speaker and especially if you're on a budget.

I've heard people rave on about these speakers and i'm certain that they offer great value for money - the thing is (and i might be confirming my bias here, stating it on YOUR channel), i find the 2 tweeters to be unnecessary and a bit of a gimmick? I mean most people won't hear north of 18khz and a single tweeter could easily handle those frequencies anyway... ofcourse, we'd have to get a professional to verify this belief, no?
