Sony SS-CS5 BookShelf Speaker Full Review (INSIDE & OUT)

Ғылым және технология

Price has gone back up since the making of this video : - (
These are some of the best speakers your going to find in the $100 to $150 range. These are the first bookshelf speakers from Sony to truly impress me at their price. There is a clue in the video thumbnail as to what I will be comparing these against in the sound demo video which I will be releasing soon after this.

On a budget then something like the Douk Audio Mini TPA3116 Bluetooth amp $39.99 Amazon. Long as you can run a RCA to 3.5mm aux from the TV to the amp this will work. If not and you need optical and better peformance the Topping MX3 is an awesome fully feature little amplifier $120 I highly recommend. Even has a sub pre out so you can add any powered sub when you want and a remote control. The Topping MX3 and Sony CS5 should be a sweet simple combo capable of more than a $250 sound bar.

I wont have them apart again till I do my upgrade/mod video on them. Sorry I didn't get the values off the xover parts being many of them weren't visable without pulling the xover out. These speakers are great out of the box but do have room for some affordable mods to take them to the next level.

Even boutique brands that cost up to 4k may have no better of a xover in them. The resistors are about the cheapest there is. The iron core coil is just fine because it's only for low frequencies, and almost all speakers cut costs there because of it. All the sides are 1/2", as is the baffle. Good video.

A very good descriptive Video. Well appreciated. I just got a pair , unfortunately at $148 a pair.... They are going off the shelf (excuse the pun), quickly. It is discontinued and/or unavailable at Sony's web site. For the money, IMO, and in the opinion of Sean ar Zero, and Randy - the Cheapaudioman- a very good sounding bookshelf speaker. The rear connectors are excellent and adaptable. I have them wired in parallel with Elac Debut Reference speakers connected to a IOTA SA3 Intergrated Preamp and a PA3 Amp. THe Sony's are 6 ohm speakers , the Elacs are 8 Ohms. They sound really GOOD playing in parallel with he Preamp and Amp able to handle the load. Why did I do this? I had the Elacs and wanted to enhance the sound in the front of the Finished Basement sound "studio" created in COVID Hibernation - hey at 69YO and retired from spinal disabilities, you need something to play with. One question , I'm not sure of why did you take the $75 speaker apart. I mean it is informative, but on the other hand, what could you expect form a $75 speaker. Be well all..... BTW, the other audiophilers have reviewed this speaker way Up the List for this pricing !! Happy Music Listening All.

Of course, the real test will be if Wilbur the Rat starts to boogie to them. Beta testing these speakers right now. $75 Xmas deal from BestBuy. They blend nicely with dual subs and speakers set to large, 45 degree toe in for good soundstage, 2' from wall. Definitely worth the dough imho. I think the Andrew Jones Pioneers have more bass, but less airy top. These have more of an airy top. Mids seem similar. Playing a notoriously muddy cd, Derek and the Dominos Live at the Fillmore and they really bring out the top end of the record. A tad trebly, a tad sibilant imho. And I have good room treatment. 70-100db sweet spot. Seem to sound good at low listening level too thanks to the airy top. I would definitely pair them with a sub(s).

  • @Cartier_specialist

Those actually look very well made for $75 a pair with a factory warranty and free shipping. If you deduct the shipping cost -- to be conservative let's figure $10 shipping. That leaves $65 ÷ 2 = $32.50 per speaker. To make a profit they'd need to produce all the components, the cabinet, the grill, the packaging for $10 out the door. That's beyond comprehension. The drivers all look pretty decent too and the crossover -- well I'm impressed that there are any air-core inductors.

  • @cnhhnc

These are not powered speakers, you need an amp or receiver to power them then you connect to the TV, probably with a toslink optical cable or HDMI. Depending on what the amp/receiver has on the back. If your TV has a headphone jack you can connect that to a cheap Lepai 2020TI amp with a simple 1/8" to 1/8" stereo wire. That's a cheap solution, the Lepai is around $25. You can only do that on a TV with a headphone jack. Connect speakers with speaker wire to amp, amp to TV, turn on amp, turn volume down on amp. Turn TV volume to at least half. Turn Lepai volume up to half. Adjust TV volume so that speakers are loud, then after that just use TV volume to control loudness.

I do not think these drivers are made by Sony themselves, however, they are almost certainly designed and engineered at Sony. They are probably made at a speaker factory in Malaysia or China, with the exact materials specified by Sony. But, does it really make a difference if the speaker sounds so good?

Youre actually wrong. It will help provide amazing off axis response to the higher end of your hearing range. Without it the treble would roll off between 10k-15k depending on listening angle

  • @djijspeakerguy4628

Yeah, a normal tweeter would probably have some peaks and nulls in the frequencies, and not really get all the way up to 20khz cleanly. Sure, if you are old enough to not hear above 10khz you might not hear a difference, but if you are younger, the sound detail could be more apparent.

These are NOT true three way speakers, theres NO MIDRANGE adding a super tweeter with a tweeter does not constitute a three way speaker. These are just a two way with the addition of a super tweeter, two ways ALWAYS lack midrange, im 63 and it amazes me how easily they pass off so many two way designs with tiny woofers and no midrange for $$$$$$$ money and talk about how great they sound - youve all been brainwashed by this "new normal" - people are paying WAY too much for two way speakers that lack midrange. I know what im talking about, I was around when midranges were common in most speakers and they sound way better while costing less than todays over hyped over priced pretentious crap

You have a point but when these are on sale they're not ripping anyone off even at $150 theyre a good deal to most over priced pretentious brands. The widespread reviews and professional measurements hold more wait than your opinion and experience. Just cause you do something a long time doesn't mean mutch. Your 63 years is is limited by your subjective preference. I haven't had any older 3 ways thay sound better than these AND are cheaper. I'd rather have a decent 2 way than a cheap 3 way.

I've had few including the Sony in this pic there over 0ver 1000. No thanks, to much expensive audio gear is all appearance and subjective nonsense then measures poorly. I'd rather build my own or get a properly engineered kit. Plus many times some DSP can make a speaker like the CS5 sound just as good or batter than much more expensive speakers. I don't script my video's I just wing them for FUN. You seem very smart and better than everyone you should start a channel and do some videos. 👍
