I couldn't think of anything better than this around 100 bucks, especially here in Japan. It even beats some speakers at 4-500 range imo. I have recommended it to multiple friends and all of them are extremely satisfied. Also I love how for a Japanese brand like Sony it's more expensive to get a pair of CS5s in Japan than in the US.

I bought a pair of the Sony cs5 speakers, they're not bad speakers, I was impressed with how strong they are and sounded when I plugged them with a vintage pioneer amp without a subwoofer. Now I have the speakers plugged with a Sony STR-DH190 receiver and Sony cs9 subwoofer for extra bass. So far I'm happy with the whole Sony setup. Sure it's not the best stereo I've owned, but it's decent and the first brand new system I've bought in a long time. Edit: I just added a pair of the Sony ss-cse Dolby atmos speakers on top of the cs5s just to add a little more voice to my stereo equipment, now I have a Sony 4.1 setup.

Ahhh the kids moved out or the wife and kids too. Miss my vintage equipment too. I'm just getting back to my hobby now since I'm too old for much else. Happy listening I bought the jamo 803s they amazed me when you turn your head to see where the sound came from that impressed me and they are only $139 a pair. Then I stepped up to the jamo c93lls selling cheap now. So good looking and that's my end on speakers till I spend time with them. And at my age I don't have to answer to my spouse. She doesn't tell me where her money goes and really I don't care. She rarely asks me, and I never lie but I've learned after 35 yrs of being together that there are a hundred ways to not answer without lying. Any mans that been married knows what I mean. So I bought the sonys for $73 on Amazon just over a year ago. They dip usually before the holidays to make room for the next boatload arrives and then again dump after the holidays to make space now they are $198 a pair I think that steep but I've got mine for the shed and I'm very happy as it sounds like you are. The jamos are very nice and at $139 a pair a bargain. Just saying. Happy listening.

@@larryh.4629 Similar to you guys, once had the high-end vintage equipment topping it off with Walsh Ohm 4's and have been away up until now for about 15- 20 years. Getting back in the game, and at my age not wanting to go in spending the big bucks, I decided to go back in with the best budget equipment available, I've started with the Sony STR-DH190 receiver and the Klipsch r-41 speakers. After hearing all the hype about Sony SS-CS5 speakers, I just added them to the mix. With all things considered and the components working in concert together in a medium sized room, I give it all a B+. To let it be known for the reason of my previous speaker background reference, I've used Advent, Polk and Walsh/Ohm speakers.

They sound best when limited to above 200hz. A minidsp and a midbass module works and sounds great with these. The minidsp will let you do a high shelf filter, tame down the highs by about 1.5db (starting at 700hz) and then it's all smooth.

They definitely sound good down to 80 hz. I have 7 of these in an atmos arrangement with a heavy hitting sub. When I position my atmos speakers and surrounds I listen to each pair in stereo from MLP to make sure they are angled correct if that makes sense. Anyway they sound really good in a square room no matter how high or close to a wall you mount them down to 80 hz in my experience

  • @kirankara

I am not an audiophile by any means and hadn't owned a dedicated system for over 25 years, but I like good sound when listening to music, and recently picked up a second hand Onkyo receiver after getting really fed up with crap sound when listening to music on a little Sony Bluetooth thing. I've been truly shocked how obnoxious some people are. I joined couple Facebook groups, one called budget hifi or something similar expecting people putting together cheap second hand systems that deliver good experience for the money, and instead got snobs who don't consider anything good unless it costs thousands. I don't have that money and frankly wouldn't spend it for how often I use it. I watch some TV with surround sound and listen to some music on KZread now and then. I researched the crap out the stuff I bought and whilst it's not exactly going to beat systems that cost thousands, for what I paid for it all, which is less than 150 pounds, I got a system that it pretty amazing. Granted, Eltax aren't high end speaker makers but I got some floor standing speakers for 50 and one of their 10 inch sub for 30 and after plenty messing with settings, I'm pretty happy with sound . I simply commented on another post from a user, who had picked up a set of eltax speakers to say that I felt they were decent budget options that were underrated as they're not really known in UK, and was attached by another poster saying they were shit. When I asked him what this opinion was based on, he had nothing, similarly when I presented him with various user reviews and any English reviews from websites that were overall positive on most products, he had no answer. As I said, I'm sure that you can put my system next to speakers that cost 6k and sound will not be as good, but I'm also sure they bloody well shouldn't do, and that the average person if they were put in blind test with both, would not care enough in daily use to spend the money needed to upgrade

I drive these speakers out in my garage man cave (24'x24') with a Yamaha R-S202 receiver paired with a Polk PSW-10 sub. Decent sound for a under $400 system. I greatly reduced the tubby bass by simply removing the covers and speakers and placing a 16"x8"x4" thick fiberglass batt between the front interior panel and the port. With the treble control at 0db and bass at 4+db I'm smiling.

I can tell you why Ive been playing with stereos since my boombox in the 80's growing up in Queens. This evolved into a car audio system (Jeep with 2 15" subs and pioneer seperate components up front) and 2 channel receivers like a 90's sony that was only 200 watts but absolutely rocked the house and ran hot for 10 years until the 5.1 surround sound bug hit. I bought a pioneer 5.1 avr and was sorely disappointed it couldnt drive my heavy box speakers as loud. Anyway flash forward many tower systems, subs and soundbars later and I have more disposable income now for toys. I have a most recently bought a refurb denon 760h i got for $350, 7 of these rcs5 in an atmos arrangement (heights are on the sidewall angled towards me but reflect off the ceiling) with a pb1000 svs sub. All in all 1500 bucks got me the best system Ive ever heard in my life. Absolutely thrilled playing ps5 and apple atmos music blows me away. Cant wait until everything is atmos mixed or to get the new ps5 vr2

I have a pair of these that I bought to replace a vintage pair of EPI-100 speakers in which the foam surrounds on the EPI's 8-inch woofers rotted. I wish Sony had made a slightly bigger version of these that could legitimately go down to 45hz the way the EPI-100s could, as I dislike subwoofers and don't have room for tower speakers. I don't listen at high volume, so it being a party speaker doesn't matter. Also, I think the woofer on the Sony speakers is smaller than they claim it is in the specs because it includes the bigger than expected round plastic circular piece that surrounds the cone.

If these handle well I might use them as surrounds when I build a system. I was looking at the waveform of some movies recently and it's surprising how much audio is in the surround channels. They're almost a mirror of the front channels just quieter and it's mostly music.

All the issues people have experienced with this brilliant set of speakers is coming from how they've been driven. If you may remember from the Jay's video, he says "It fricking scales!" Do you know what it means? Because these are very cheap speakers doesn't mean you should pair them up with cheap amplifiers. Of course it'd bloat or resonate if you don't pair them up with at least Hegel, Musical Fidelity or similar entry Hi-end stuff. Crossover design and solid build quality of these speakers make it very hard to beat even in USD 1K. Have you ever realized how tonality is mind blowing? Haven't you got goosebumps from the timbre and dynamics it produces? Then you're pairing them up with wrong amplification. This whole Core series speakers are bargain! If you buy tower version of this (SS-CS3) you would not seek for another pair of speakers: Bass is so correct, deep, clear and enough which I'm not satisfied any pricier speakers since 2016 :) yes, this Core series is old but people hyped them in the last couple of years which I've been waiting for a long time. Do you know the components used in them have more quality than some of the cheaper components used in KEF LS50? I don't think so, because you're just seeing them as shitty Sony. They especially focused on how to reduce resonance: Please knock them on the top and see how it's hard as a rock and not hollow at all.

LOVE this 'no filter' energy and presentation. PEOPLE ... in the audio space / hobby .. need to seriously evaluate their attitudes like they scrutinize ther gear for BEST possible performance... SO? ... What, .. you have flawless sound in your room at home ..but you flood the comment sections and sound off like a POS? ... C A L M - D O W N ... Ya'll AudioPhiliacs make more noise than anyone else in comment sections .. which is the most ironic shit I ever witnessed ... from a hobbyist time chasing the LOWEST noise floor possible in the equipment.. like .. WTF? .. Anyhow .. hahaha... Please, Keep this up .. We could use some more of this fun and entertaining style online .. ( yes.. videos can't present the actual sound - no shit) That's why this is meant for perspective and entertainment .. NOT factual listening examples.. =) ... and I HOPE it rings a bell.. We can enjoy our systems and appreciate how others feel about it without preaching a sermon to everyone else. Cheers dude!!! You got my vote. ...and now Sony owns my favorite video game studio ! Bungie / Destiny 2 ! =)

I'm an audiophile and I love these speakers. These are affordable for anyone that's just starting, then you can invest more money into preamp and amplifier. Later on you can add a little mini sub or eventually just buy a more expensive speaker.

Easy recommendation, but only at the price for which YOU purchased them. I've looked at these on Amazon for months and months, and every time they're above $200. Right now @$228. @ that price, the value proposition is entirely different. No way are they worth even $175. I love your turtle. I have a small box turtle. Yours could stomp all over mine, lol.

for not much more you could also buy the Adam t5v monitors. A bit more accurate overall, may not sound as "punchy" in the bass because there isn't a bump there like in the a5+.

Frankly, if your room is of modest size and you want HUGE value for money, these are a NO-BRAINER! Save your hard earned funds for a DAC, preamp, amp, etc. The SS-CS5 do so many things well that they can leave you smiling and GRATEFUL (!) for hours at a time. If you don't know anything about how to set up speakers and DAMPEN REFLECTION POINTS (hard surfaces where your speakers reflect off windows, walls, etc.), you may find them harsh, but that mostly points to the hidden SS-CS5 potential in the upper registers. No one should expect this speaker to rock the lowest frequencies, as precious few bookshelf speakers do that. If set up correctly, SS-CS5 produce an amazing soundstage, and they will reveal the strengths and distinctive character of your upstream components. I have swapped in three different amplifiers, each showing up differently through the SS-CS5. I frequently compare this system to my MUCH more expensive and elaborate and specifically tuned-in "first" system, with all its mesmerizing tonal color, lifelike impact, etc... etc... I have to say, there is something immensely pleasing in the highly musical small box design captured in the SS-CS5, and if I had to go it without my main rig owing to unforeseen misfortune, I would have this low cost second system with which to while away the hours in utter satisfaction. There really is a point at which it is YOUR ABILITY to tune in and lose yourself that is the point, and I say this after "mastering" my main rig for three years and knowing it can do things that few systems can do.

Yeah a few things. Would I say these are true HI FI? Debatable…I’d say no…BUT for a budget system for someone getting into the higher fidelity space and you don’t wanna break the bank? Yeah these are a good starting point. When you upgrade speakers and such you also need to consider that when people are getting these super expensive speakers are also upgrading their amps, Dacs all that jazz too. So if you pair these with say a Yamaha A-S301 or a 501 2 channel amp MAYBE better dac if you wanted to and you want a budget High Rez system as a sound bar killer? Under 1000 bux out the door if you include a decent turntable? Yeah I’d say these fit the bill.

  • @Tigeron1a

And on another note, better sound may not mean more expensive right off the batt…I can’t tell you how many people do not understand that room treatment for their system and how that effects sound quality both positive and negative. Before people jump on the “these speakers suck and I gotta get those 1000 dollar wizzbang specials.” Move your speakers around, if there in a cabinet or next to the wall, move them out into the room a bit. What are they sitting on? Maybe consider isolating them from the surface there sitting on. All these changes can help sound quality quite a bit.

At the end of the day most people just want to enjoy some records or streaming services without going to far into the weeds. And these Sony SsCS5’s will do exactly that. Heck, for 118 bucks….these are pretty cheap so if you want something to tinker around with (yes these are upgradable) you can change out the crossovers and poly caps to better quality components. If you so desire.

I think someone would fare much better to get some KEF q150s on sale or used - might be $100 more than the Sony retail but they’re worth every penny, even at full price. They aren’t far off in sound quality from my q350s and there are few 1-2k bookshelf speakers I’d take over these. A KEF engineer actually said the 150s are about 90% of the sound quality of $1600 LS50 Meta. A true giant killer if there ever was one. I actually prefer the 350s over the ls50s - especially with my amp pairing, a Cambridge CXA81 and SVS SB-1000 Pro sub. Probably the last stereo I’ll ever buy, unless they die before I do.
