Would you still HOMEBREW if you couldn't drink BEER?
Ойын-сауық
Had a recent health issue that made me stop drinking beer....at least temporarily. It made me think...Would I still make my own beer if I couldn't drink it? How about you?

There is no way I’d continue making beer if I wasn’t going to drink it. I’m the type that copes with the hassles of brewing so that I can get to the end result which is what I truly care about; the pay off. lol

Totally get it! If I really had to quit drinking beer I’d probably be singing a different tune 🤣 for now, I’ll just brew a bit less frequently, cheers 🍻
Ask your doc about allopurinol. I started on it when I was 25 and it’s been life changing. I’ve had to make no concessions about what I eat/drink - beer, shellfish, etc. virtually no side effects. Can’t recommend enough

Same here. Never had gout but my uric acid levels always tested high. Doctor said take allopurinol for life as it’s a really safe medicine. Either that or stop drinking alcohol, eating meat, shellfish, and a ridiculous number of other foods… Life’s to be lived. Go science!
Finding that balance of beer consumption and health is certainly a challenge. Glad you'll keep on brewing no matter what and I agree that the process is a lot of fun and even therapeutic. Looks like a great stout! Gout Stout!
So glad to see you back. Your one of if not my favorite brewing channels. Take care of your health . If you drink a bit of beer cut back on something else to help balance. Great video as always

So happy to see you back! I'm finally catching up to some of the videos I haven't been able to watch for a while. I think the love for the craft comes down to making the beer, not drinking it. You are an inspiration for a great balance of creation and consumption. Cheers Brian and love the shirt!

Great to see you back brewing..Suffered from that a few years ago and i can tell you the pain is unreal. Brewing myself now again and enjoying good beer but finding that balance with health is important..Cheers🍺
Glad you’re on the mend and can enjoy some homebrew beer… I’ve almost stopped drinking full stop, going several weeks between beers… mainly sick of crap sleep. Considering brewing some non-alcoholic beers as I’ve become to like the taste but also can’t be bothered going through the process

Great video and I feel your pain....you're not alone brew'tha! 🍻
great yeast I've used it quite a few times & recommend pitching it warmer 25°c & hold that temperature for better souring & pitching two packs for 5 gallon batches works well
Nice see you back. Take care your health. Hope you keep this channel. Your videos mood is amazing! Tks for all and cheers from Brazil!

Thanks for watching!!!
Honestly, homebrewing lends itself well to "moderated drinking". I've found that 5 gallon batches used to fly off the shelf too fast, to the point I could barely keep up, back when I had no health reasons to slow down. Nowadays I'm not putting the beer down like I used to, which makes me enjoy my homebrews that much more as now they're more of a special occasion to enjoy.
Glad to see you back.. glad you are healthy. love the vids as usual. Much love from NorCal

I haven't consumed much alcohol in the past four years but enjoy making it for competition and giving as gifts. I am now jumping into making mead. I just received a gold for Eisbock and a silver for Old Ale at State Fair. I will likely brew a couple batches of beer in October for Thanksgiving/Christmas/NewYears/Birthday (all occurring within about 6 weeks). My intention is to purchase a gallon of honey from various sources at least once a month for the mead. I will be using corney kegs for the mead fermentation. I may pick up more 3 gallon or even smaller kegs for the mead once I figure out what I want to do.
Glad you can still find a way to brew and enjoy the hobby. I've been trying to find a way to balance health and beer consumption as well. Gotta take care of ourselves!

See I enjoy the process too. That’s why I’m a small batch brewer (~1.5 gallons). I know, stone me. But I like the process of brewing/experimentation a lot and I don’t drink a huge amount of beer. If I don’t bring my gallon over someone’s house it’ll last a few months

Ya I stumbled upon yours as well and am enjoying all your videos greatly!!! Cheers 🍻
I did actually have a brief period where I couldn't drink beer but kept homebrewing. Last year I gave up beer for lent and during that time I just brewed a ton of lagers that would condition over the course of the 40 days and 40 nights. Dunno if it counts since I know I'd get to enjoy it, just later... but I still probably would brew beer even if I didn't have that delayed gratification. It's always a fun thing to share with friends, family, neighbors and coworkers that suddenly not brewing would be almost a crime.
There’s that stout you were talking about. Beautiful looking beer my friend. Sorry to hear about the health concerns. I’d probably still brew if I couldn’t drink beer, but I would probably brew a lot less. Definitely would try to find a way to brew something that works with whatever health concern I had if you know what I mean. Anyway, cheers!

Take care of yourself is number one. I brew commercially as well so I’d still do that but as far as homebrewing I’d probably give it up if I couldn’t drink beer. I don’t want the temptation at home. Cheers 🍻

Always a risk of having 4 kegs at home…easy access!!! I’ve definitely started giving more away now that I can as well!!! Cheers 🍻
As one who is going to be going into surgery in the next few weeks and should also cut back on the beer intake. This video hits. I just filled kegs for the kegerator so I have 3 kegs on tap. Not sure how long I will be able to enjoy them but worst case scenario I end up giving it to friends who like it and will enjoy it. Glad your health is better and yeah having a chicken coop does suck because of the flies. Cheers and enjoy the eggs, cause there is no other reason to have chickens. 🙂
As a chemist, I always approach it this way: "the poison is in the dosage!". So much so, I am ready to do another dry month in the middle of the year. Like you said, take it slow and easy. Glad to see your videos back on YT! Cheers

Daaaayyyyyyyuuuuuummmmm! Hate to heat about the gout bro! Never been subjected myself, but some friends have mentioned their struggles. Hope you work through it ok. The stout looks phenomenal and glad to see you back here! Would I brew if I couldn’t drink it? Honestly…no. Part of the reason I brew is because I enjoy it, but the majority part is because I want to drink it lol. Cheers to your health my friend, and cheers to your next brew, whether you drink it or not! 🍻

Glad you are able to find a balance and still enjoy the hobby. Personally, if I couldn't drink my beer I'd stop brewing beer. I'd likely continue to make cider for family and drinking on special occasions though. My family has 100+ apple trees, so I've made it a tradition to make cider with the apples every fall. I'd likely keep the kegerator around but get into some non/low alcohol beverages like hop water, kombucha, ginger beer, root beer, and kefir water.

I had the same thing. It’s incredibly painful and debilitating. Try untucking your bedsheets. That aggravated my big toe and I would wake up with a flare up that would last a week or more. And drink lots and lots of water. Throughout the day and then alternate water with beer when drinking. Those are my two pro tips. Good luck!

For sure, if I had to stop drinking beer I'd brew less but would continue! It'd be hard to walk away from all the time spent learning brewing and is so much fun to give to people. Glad that you can still get some in without troubles, it's always good to think about when we can cut back a little for less now, but more brewing in the long term by keeping our bodies feeling good!

I enjoy giving away my beers more than drinking them most of the time 🤣
I enjoy the process of making beer. Drinking a lot of beer is not good for my health either. So I make it, give some away, and space out the time I drink it. Moderation. Good “thought “ video for viewers to ponder.
I love brewing and drinking beer, but hate that it’s a poison. To combat any I’ll health effects, I have always done intense workouts 6-7 days a week, watch what I eat, and do not drink any alcohol during the week.
Love the video…care to share the recipe? Think I need to brew a summer stout too😊

I really like drinking beer and in pretty large amounts, so I mainly brew low ABV lagers. For the most time I skip wine, drinks and especially hard liquor. I prefer beer over all of that and could skip all other alcoholic beverages for life if I had to. To answer the question, I sadly would NOT keep brewing if I could not enjoy it myself.
@ElementaryBrewingCo

I enjoy beer over all other drinks as well!!! And low ABV lagers are the BEST!!! Cheers 🍻
As long as I can drink say 6 to 8 oz of my beer to taste the results I would keep brewing and do small batches
This is me for the past few months. I brew about 3 gallons a month. But only drink about 355ml a week lol. Not cause of gout, but cause of health reasons-links of alcohol to cancer and what not. I give almost all of my beer. The process is the best part for me for sure! Cheers!

@@ElementaryBrewingCo Thanks heaps!
Been there before with the gout in the past, not a good feeling. I too have been dialing back the alcohol consumption. That’s been a huge part of me downsizing my equipment to now brew 3 gallon batches. Still brewing frequently but able to keep it fresh and give away beer. Glad you’re back at it with the content. 🤙
I also have gout and it sucks but I'm not giving up beer. 3 times per year I stop drinking any form of alcohol for 2-4 weeks and I also cut most carbs out of my diet while abstaining from alcohol. Eggs which are low in purine are my main source of protein during that time and I eat mushrooms and cruciferous vegetables. I drink only coffee and lots of water. This not only helps with my gout but I also lose weight which is great. I just finished 30 days of abstinence and I brewed 3 beers during that time kolsch, altbier and Mexican lime lager. All beers that I can enjoy later but I don't think I would homebrew if I could not drink beer ever again.

Yeah... I stopped drinking beer not making beer, in order to lose weight. It worked. And also I highly, higly recommend the Mediterranean diet.
I know a teetotal homebrewer, his wife drinks the beer!
Hi mate, fellow brewer and gout victim here. Have you gotten diagnosed which type of gout it is? if its uric acid gout there is a medicine called Allupurinol that inhibits the formation of deposit of uric acids in the body.. With no dietary restrictions.
@ElementaryBrewingCo
Жыл бұрын
Nice! Someone else recommended allupurinol as well. When I went to the Dr and had blood work my Uris acid level was normal 🤦🏻♂️ I think I waited to long after the flare up, I’ll make sure I ask next time, thanks for the info, cheers 🍻
Unequivocally no, if I was informed my liver counts were Fd or I had heart issues yes.
Even though I love the process of making beer( except for the cleaning), if I couldn’t drink it, I would stop brewing. I just love drinking the fruits of my labor. 🙂 Tell me why did you only put the dark grains into the mash during the final 10 minutes?
@ElementaryBrewingCo
Жыл бұрын
Drinking the beer you make is definitely a treat like no other. I put the dark grains in for only the last 10-15 minutes of the mash to help reduce any chances of them causing any extra bitterness/harshness etc.
I'll take one,
Personally, If I couldn’t drink it, I most certainly wouldn’t brew it. That’d be like paying to work! But hey, to each their own.
When in gout, stop drinking beer, lol jk Teach, glad you're up and back at it...

Honestly, and this is just my opinion, but probably not.
