Would you pay over $1600 for a Seiko SKX ?

I remember purchasing 4 of these watches in different configurations
From the SKX007 in black to the SKX009 pepsi and a few odd colours : orange, yellow etc
I marvel how the same watch that could be purchased for $150 is now fetching 10 times that amount
Hindsight is an amazing thing
Thanks for watching..

And still weirdly always getting lured back to the SKX
My 009 and 007 sit proudly in my collection amongst Rolex Explorer, Breitling Colt 41, Tudor BB58, Omega Constellation, Hamilton Khaki King, Tissot Visodate, Seiko Chronograph quartz. They are so special and just become part of your life. Purchased mine years ago from Long Island Watch $180-007, $190-009 on jingle jangle jubilee.
Good thing I bought mine SKX007 5 years ago for a "normal" price. With 31 watches in my collection, this still is one of my favorites over this years. Especially on the supplied jubilee bracelet. Timeless piece of horology ❤

Thanks for sharing!..and enjoy it for many years to come 👍👍
I bought an SKX-171 in ‘97 and have put it through absolute hell…and it shows. It was my daily wear for 20years and has seen everything from its intended use for diving to military ops, mining and construction. The hardlex is well scratched up, the bezel was knocked off at one point losing the click spring and it’s on its third Zulu strap…the first was a Waterborne. Looking for a new watch in 2018 is what led me into this mad hobby/obsession. I now appreciate the old 171 with all the scars from two decades of hard use and all the character that goes with it and will never part with it or even replace the hardlex crystal. I also have a 009 from the same time which has been lightly worn, including for recreational diving which has no more than a few scuffs and a well faded bezel insert…the red is now almost pink. I have far more expensive and ‘nicer’ watches now but there’s just something about those two SKX’s that I adore. If you know…you know.
I actually stumbled upon one of these just yesterday at a pawn shop in absolutely immaculate original condition, not faded, not modded, just pristine. I got it for $200 even! I know how lucky I was to get this one, because my first one from years ago has a mild mod, I installed a double domed sapphire crystal, being my daily wearer, has acquired quite a few scratches on the original crystal, but kept the rest of it original with its faded and scratched bezel. Even the dial is a bit faded when compared to my newish one! Thanks for such a well published video on this icon of a watch!

You did really well on that deal
I owned an SKX013 and two different SKX009 over the years but ultimately sold them all. I hated the lack of hand winding and eventually made me sell them. Boy do I regret it now. Which I kept both my SKX013 and the SKX009. There’s something so classic about these pieces. Sometimes the best watches to own are the cheaper, simple ones without all the bells and whistles. Oh well…

I love my SKX. Wear it daily and it’s iconic and indestructible. I think it’s far more bizarre to pay £20K+ for a Rolex or any watch.
Imagine if Seiko decided to release an updated version of the SKX, with sapphire crystal, a ceramic bezel, drilled lugs, an updated movement with hacking and hand winding and 70hrs power reserve, a jubilee bracelet with solid screw links, and a milled clasp with a user adjustment mechanism to expand. Seiko could probably charge $2000+ for it and it'd still be a hit.

Long Island Watch make an SXK homage with an NH36 movement (hacking and hand-winding), sapphire crystal.
I bought mine 6 years ago for 240$ as a gift for my 30th Birthday and to remember the one I was fascinated as a kid but somehow broke trying to see hou tough it is. After 6 years I love everything about it and the jubilee bracelet is as comfortable as cloth. I am a 1 watch guy, I do have people arround me with very very expensive pieces they are nice but this one is mine it fits me and is on par with everything I carry and the wayu I am.
I love the simplicity of the movement. I have plenty of hand winding, hacking movements and I don't WISH this watch had those features. This 7s26 movement represents a most basic watch movement that just keeps on going. I bought my two sons an skx each. One was a 1996 model that I bought in 1997. I had no idea what it was at the time but there it was for $125.00 on ebay. He still wears it and it runs as new!
Such a cool five watch and thanks for covering it again. I was lucky enough to buy both the 007 and 009 versions back when they could be had for a few hundred dollars and have them in my collection. Keep up the great work Peter.
Great video Pete - enjoyed it immensely. I have an SKX007J and an SKX009K. I don't wear them that much anymore but there is no way I will ever part with them for ANY price. I agree, a timeless, once in a generation classic.

Thanks for this lovely and kind review of the SKX009. I've had mine since 2003 and love it. It sits confidently alongside my giant Nixon 51-30 from 2009 and my anthracite HydroConquest. My SKX is the baby in size, but it is such a warm watch to wear and I am very fond of it. Great review.

I love my SKX j1. I should have kept it as is in the box but I love wearing it. My alignments are spot on and if I wear it daily it keeps very accurate time. Great video!
Truly legendary watch. Im happy i got mine a few years ago, and have it in my collection in mint condition 🙂
Decent tool watch in its day; nowadays it may have a deserved reputation among collectors but nothing explain the bizarre prices for what it is. The Citizen NY0040 has always been a superior competitor since day one and remains so against both SKX and its supposed "replacement".
@winstonlanda7731
10 ай бұрын
I own both. The Citizen NY0040 is the inferior watch. Let me explain the few reasons why. 1) Uneven lume application. The indices and hands are gorgeous, but the lume is uneven as the hands shine brighter than the markers. 2) Loud rotor. I can hear my NY0040 Miyota over my office noise. That's loud. 3) Glossy dial. This means that the ability to read time is hindered by the reflecting light on the dial. Add applied indices and you're just getting light reflection on the dial. While that may be preference, it certainly prevented me from reading time on my motorcycle. The SKX is the superior watch. Lumibrite is the best in its class, the 7S26 (while it may not hack) is just as accurate and SILENT in the case, and the dial is matte; easy reading under sunlight and extremely visible even in low light. By the way, my NY0040 is for sale. I won't wear it.
@TheGrenadier97
10 ай бұрын
But the Citizen is hand-windable and actually affordable nowadays, unlike the SKX, which is getting weirdly expensive and can't barely be found brand-new. The first point is a good convenience, the second is a huge deal-breaker.
@winstonlanda7731
10 ай бұрын
@@TheGrenadier97 And I agree. But the good news is that you can make a similar SKX style, or even a homage, for a bargain. My point really is that 4R36/7S26 is a much better movement than the Miyota 8200 series.
@dustycups

@@winstonlanda7731In regards to the uneven lume application on the NY0040 - the latest version which came out a year or so ago has fixed that issue. Both the hands and dial plots glow at the same brightness and perform as good as the SKX.
I purchased my 007 for $180 USD and $190 USD for my 009. Love my SKX and glad I never modded it and kept it original. Still in my watch box after so many years amongst much more expensive pieces.
Remember wanting the (then new) SKX when I started my Scuba journey. At the time I never did get one as my dive watch was a Citizen (quartz) but all those years later when I started collecting mechanical watches got two SKXs which I still have in their original condition. An absolute legend!
I bought my SKX for the market price the year before it was discontinued, and I still wear it regular on the floppy bracelet, despite owning other, more capable watches, and having bought and sold other more superior Seiko divers (Turtle, Samurai, Solar Tuna, Sumo). I think the appeal of the SKX comes from its place as the final chapter in an unbroken legacy of mechanical divers, its wearable size, and for many (including myself), it’s their first mechanical watch. Would I buy one or repurchase one now, knowing what I do about it? Absolutely not, I would buy a King Turtle, but I’m glad I bought it at the right price.

Nice review. I own a 007k and its my daily driver. Its pretty special even among today's line ups. If you have one, never let it go.
Pete. I've now had my 007 for 28 years and it hasn't missed a beat. In that time I've only had it serviced twice. It may not have hacking and hand winding, but it has what it needs. The 7s26 movement is bullet proof and more reliable than some high end movements. I now have the 009, 011, 013. I'm waiting on delivery of a yellow dial 173. You're right about the prices. I was offered £600 for the 013. I wouldn't sell any of them. Great video as usual my friend. Take care and stay safe.
Watches are collectibles, watches are not investments. In the short term, at least compared with our human existence, we see the prices going up for certain models/brands. In the long run, it will not stay this way. Watches are consumer goods, they are consumed by us (users), time etc.
Nice. Glad I've got the SKX007J1 with box and papers in my collection!
I am happy to have my SKX009 since 2018. The design is my favorite feature.
It took me 5 attempts over 7 years to find a straight one, an SKX013 but I am glad I persevered. This and my Citizen Promaster NY0040 sit proudly in my collection. Both iconic, both flawed but both equally rugged and endearing. A must for collectors.
Picked up my first SKX007K1 a little over a month ago and it has yet to come off my wrist. Luckily one came up at a great price so I grabbed it, it really is a good looking everyday workhorse of a watch. Surprisingly comfortable too

They are all built, exactly the same factory in Malaysia, with the same parts in the same computers! Paying extra Thinking you’re getting a better one because it’s made in Japan is a Farce! Shame on Seiko for being so shady. All those watches all those movements are all made in Malaysia 100% not in Japan, not assembled in Japan. seiko is out of their minds right now. My last seiko purchase was spb121j1 and it has the updated 6r35 movement which runs +/-25 sec a day. My older seiko 5sport with 7s36 runs at +/-10sec a day and its like $150. New stuff isn't always better. With less than 1600aud you can buy a Certina DS action titanium 38mm. It has 300WR with iso6425, nevichron hairspring, antimagnetic, and diver extension, and mine runs at cosc standard with +/-2sec a day. I feel bad for the new watch enthusiast when they have very little money to spend on this hobby and get seiko as a general recommendation for their first watch. There are better options out there nowadays. Personally I'm boycotting seiko ATM. Great video again!
I hope someone eventually will, I bought 2 of them at $350 a pop 2 years ago when I heard Seiko discontinued them xD

Qualitative watch - yes. Deep brand heritage - yes, for sure. But I still do not understand, why people are so focusing on Seiko. Wow, seriously?
Enjoyed the video! Personally, I'm yet to see a modded SKX that I like more than the stock version. The reason it's so successful is it's design. As for the prices going into the several thousand, I doubt this will happen, even 10 years from now. Seiko just made too many. Maybe for a NOS watch from the early years of the production, but certainly not for most SKXs. P. S. I think the SKX is proof that a watch is way more than its specs. It always used to get criticized for having no hand-winding and hacking capabilities, and a hardlex crystal. I can tell you I've had one for about 7 years, and the bezel insert is quite scratched, but the crystal is pristine. It's not a fragile as people think. As for the hand-winding and hacking, I never missed them. They're nice to have, but not essential.

It was a classic, still is always will be but those scalpers out there capitalising on seiko ceasing production is just the work of seikopaths. Kind of sad I had so many 007s/009s and always moved them on the forums for £120/£150 depending if it’s a J or a K . Wish I’d kept them it’s a stunner still and as pointed out in the video was my first entry point into WIS watches
The secret of skx is simple: it’s not from 1996, it’s from 1978, design of seiko 7548 became automatic version of vintage quartz divers. That’s why it’s last of true seiko diver and I pay 600$ for that.

Never bought the SKX009 but instead bought the predecessor to the SKX013 in the late 90s. I do not remmber the model number but it had the same hands and the case as the SKX013 with markers all applied rather than printed, also the twelve o'clock marker was double index rather than triangle. It came with faux five link hollow bracelet and steel rotating bezel without insert. I bought it for around 150 USD back then, and for the following 15 years, it served me very well. It was very reliable and I had no issue with its accuracy. I lost it when I returned from a work overseas but I still miss it a lot even though my collection had grown much larger with much more expensive watches. As 5KX line has lost the charm that came with the SKX line, I hope someday Seiko reissues the SKX series however improbable.
I’ve got an old SKX007 without the original jubilee and with a dodgy movement and some scratches on the crystal that hasn’t been worn for a couple of years. Thought I might get £50 for it if I’m lucky but this made me think. Ps none of the 7s26 movements in my watches have kept accuracy, I’ve tried regulating them but they just get out again. As someone who used to wear a 7S26-based Seiko some time ago, I don't quite get why stand all its inconveniences, let alone overpay for them.
You can make your own from parts. You don't have to pay that insane cost. You can get someone to build the SKX from parts cheaper than the insane prices. Mark from Long Island Watches started his business from assembling Seiko classics.
An icon worth 200USD. Outdated movement design, unimpressive dial, luma not matching color scheme, cheap case finishing, fingerprint magnet... Shall I continue?
Absolutely nuts. But Robert Redford had a rare SKX401 (limited to the Philippine market) which quickly became the prized version, fetching several times the price of an SKX007. I had an SKX401 too and the build quality was much better than those made in Malaysia.

It is already considered vintage since it is from 1996, but they are also rare because no one really sells the SKX007 anymore, being very collectable. It will be quite difficult to catch an unmodified skx. I personally just bought 3 new old stock from an individual who had 6 skx007, brand new, $240 each. When I called to get more..they were already sold...
Let’s hope so. I have about half a dozen of them.
