Would you drink this mysterious red liquid? SKOPJE Old Bazaar Market, North Macedonia

Hi everyone! This is the sixth video in my Balkans series.
In this vlog, I explore Skopje's Old Bazaar. Many of the shops and stalls were closed due to public holidays, but I did manage to up my energy levels with a pomegranate juice, bought some fridge magnets from local traders and enjoyed the peace and quiet of various alleys.
Let's explore!

Best juice when travelling Sheila! Love the fridge magnets. I'll tell you what - I picked up a very hostile vibe in North Macedonia in some parts regarding the camera. So unfortunately many of my first impressions of North Macedonians were not positive. Luckily there are people such as the pomegranate juice seller that makes up for this. This shop keeper at the end was just plain annoying though. After barely filming for 30 seconds and asking him some information about his store and products, he must have thought in his mind that I am not going to buy something. I was going to, but decided my money was not worth his rude attitude. They really do need to value tourism a lot more in North Macedonia, if indeed they want the tourism.

Thank you for an interesting video. I hope you got the opportunity to explore many other regions as Macedonia has numerous lakes, canyons and stunning mountains to offer. And you'll always have yummy food to sustain you. A bit of advice though, take certain comments with a grain of salt. (I like your diplomatic replies.) Whilst patriotic feelings for one's country can be good, nationalism (especially based on lies and distortions) can be harmful and does nothing to promote peace and harmony. And please disregard links to Wikipedia articles. It is well-known that it is very unreliable for anything history or politics-related as nationalists have worked out how to control wiki and distort the information, write out of context or deliberately leave out information which they find unfavourable to their preferred narrative, and lock out those with opposing contributions. Universities and many secondary schools do not accept references from Wikipedia for these very reasons. Happy travelling!

@@01vllakqo59 and Klodi Skenderaj Wow! Everyone in the Balkans has an invented story about their neighbours and a fantasied version for themselves. Have you heard the one about Albanians coming from Azerbaijan? You claim to be in the Balkans longer than the Slavic population, including the Macedonians, but many historians disagree and say you're originally from the Caucasus - the part called Albania before it became Azerbaijan. And the Serbs claim that Kosovo is stolen Serbian land. And don't get me started on the terrorist acts by Albanians against innocent Macedonians after Macedonia granted them refuge following the horrific Kosovo war. Before the terrorism by the Kosovars (I'm not suggesting all Kosovar people are terrorists) Albanians and Macedonians lived side by side in harmony, friendship and respect. Change your petty mindset and you can do it again. Grow up and stop inventing lies about your neighbours or your own truths may be exposed.

Albanians need to learn some facts. The old bazaar was built during the ottoman period by the Turks. Old bazaar has nothing to do with Albanians. Albanians are 24% of the population. The old bazaar divides the Macedonian part and Albanian part of the city. @Willie Explore if you want to see the Albanian part you should go to Chair and not getting fooled by Albanians who think Old Bazaar is Albanian.Unfortunatly some Albanians have some kind of an superior feeling of being Autochtones in the balkans while the slavs are more than 1500 years here. Besides the south-slavs are gennetically more native balkan than slavic especcially the Macedonians, but in my opinion that is not really important. It is only used as an pollitically Albanian agenda to make their territory bigger. Albanians are generally good people(especially to tourists), but this is why they basically have problems with all their slavic-speaking neighbours.

Rise above that inferiority complex and paranoia of everyone in the Balkans trying to steal your dubious history. And yeah...you're utterly and terribly mistaken to claim Albanians have problems in the Balkans. It is quite the contrary, it is Macedonians facing an existential identity crisis with two neighboring countries who dispute your history and identity. You need to address that not the Albanians. Albanians don't need to feel superior and they do not need to show it to make a statement. They are at home ..present in three different states in the Balkans. So, cut it out and stop spamming this honorable gentleman's amazing videos with your tantrums of a toddler! It's embarrassing to say the least.

@@linart25 Well if Albanians in this comment section and video didn’t spread false facts I wouldn’t even have to write an comment. But if you do that about my country I am not gonna ignore that. So next time bother you Albanian friends first. Albanians have an superoity complex, I have seen many times Albanians seeing slavs as less worth people. You have a small conflict with every slavic neighboring country(🇲🇰🇷🇸🇲🇪) because of your big Albania plans. And you are right we also have/had conflicts with neighboring countries about history but we don’t have an identity crisis we know that we are Macedonian but the problem is that se people do not like that. In my opinion an identity crisis is when an person can not choose what he is.Besides being proud Macedonian has nothing to do with thinking we are better than other people. And if I remember good in the last 3 wars/ military conflict in the balkan Albanians terrorist were involved. I agree in 1999 the Serbians did horrible things to the Albanians but it all started with the Albanian terroristic organization uck who started all problems and the same uck tried in Macedonia in 2001 and 2015.So don’t act that innocent. @iamjus Why would they do that? Whilst Greece demolished any signs of her Ottoman past when she became a nation in 1830, including the mosques, to give the illusion of continuity from antiquity, Macedonia has retained all the Ottoman architecture and does not hide her history during Ottoman occupation and the influences they left. Why would they destroy anything now? And what have you done to contribute to the country? Perhaps you are not aware that prior to the arrival of the Kosovar refugees, after the terrorist acts committed by some of them, the Albanians who already resided in Macedonia got along well with Macedonians and many were good friends. Some still are. It is your attitude which is pulling you back into the dark ages. What a shame.

@Sir Airli No, it wasn't. Skopje ("Shkupi") was, for a period, under the Kosovo Vilayet, which was simply an administrative region under the Ottoman Empire but still majority Slavonic. The Ottoman Empire divided its occupied territories into vilayets for administrative purposes and they had nothing to do with ethnicity. The new nation of Kosovo, once considered part of Serbia, was created in 2008. Skopje is a very old city. Kosovo is a brand new country, and still not even recognised by all the world. All nations in Europe, particularly in the Balkans are new - Greece being the first in 1830 and Albania being created in 1912 - around the time frame when Macedonia, once double its present size, was carved up and given to its neighbours as the spoils of war. Realise that you are infected by poisonous nationalism and perhaps try being a good neighbour.

Nonsense! Macedonians have been in Macedonia for millennia. In the 800s, Emperor Michael stated to the famous apostle brothers, Cyril and Methodius, who spread Slavonic literacy as far as present-day Czech Republic: "You two are from Thessaloniki and all Thessalonians speak pure Slavic." Otherwise known as Old Church Slavonic and based on the Macedonian dialect of Salonica, the then capital of Macedonia until it was divided after the Balkan Wars of 1912 - 1913. No sign of any Albanians or Albanian language till much later, though most wandering Albanians went to Morea (today known as Greece), became known as Arvanites and their descendants eventually became "Greek." Stop spreading your nationalistic lies.

@@blerimrogova4619 and E S The grand old "Slavic invasion" myth has been debunked by award-winning historians and anthropologists. "Slav" is not an ethnicity. Slavonic speakers certainly moved about, often in search of better pastures or better climates, as did all tribes, but there is evidence that this diverse group is indigenous to the Balkans and have been there far longer than since 800 AD, though why that should matter to any modern-day peoples is mind-boggling. Albanians, on the other hand, are said to have arrived centuries later, all the way from the original Albania in what is Azerbaijan today. But what does it matter? As for "Slavonic language" - well, two thirds of Europe is "Slavic" and speaks a Slavonic language. Over 350 million people supposedly trekked from Siberia. And, um, Albania is actually dotted with numerous Slavic place names. As for lacking insight into terminology, ethnicity, and current knowledge, emerging evidence and the crushing of myths, and just not keeping up with academia, congrats. Oh, and E S forgot to mention that Kosovo is a brand new country, formerly part of Serbia, and previously the name 'Kosovo" referred to the administrative region under the Ottoman empire and this region (or millet) was mostly Slavic-speaking.
