Inside Cairo's SLUM Filled with GARBAGE | Cairo Egypt Walking Tour in 4K

In between the iconic landmarks, mosques, and souks of Cairo lies a slum settlement that is filled with garbage. Bags and bags and bags of garbage. Appropriately nicknamed Garbage City, it’s actually called Manshiyat Naser, and it’s located just around the outskirts of Cairo’s centre, at the base of Mokattam Hill.

It’s called ‘zabbaliin quarter’ -‘garbage collectors quarters’, populated mostly by Christian Egyptians* (Copts), who have been responsible for collecting and recycling Cairo’s garbage for decades, and doing a much better job than many western countries who claim they recycle but end up in landfills. -plastic, paper, tin cans, even fish and animal bones boiled to make glue for shoe-making. A very vibrant neighbourhood that serves a purpose. The people are happy and households are mostly clean. Not a poor neighbourhood. * note the absence of hijabs’ on women .

As women, you are seen as 'meat' and we never got left alone, always pestering you and beeping and stopping their vehicles. Was disgusting. They need to get into the 21st century. It’s amazing to see that even living a life of poverty and in the “slums” the people all seem to be friendly and perfectly content with what they’re dealt. All the children even smiling and saying hello the adults look up when you walk by most of them saying hello. I am in the USA and I can tell you not many people here look up and say hello when you walk by them they either stare forward or do not even look up from their phone very few acknowledge you in such a way as most of these people did.

Poverty and lack of capabilities - What is strange is that you find very rich people in these neighborhoods and they remain there, and also corrupt governments that have not planned anything since 1980 and are only concerned with stealing people’s money. The current president is completely demolishing these neighborhoods and building completely new cities for them. But things are going slowly because of corruption and theft as well. We western people are trained to that by so called meds and big pharma to be scared of dirt and lack of householding sanitary. Just open any TV program. Al that driven by profits. . . If You had opportunity to live there You would realize that living in other countries always offer something for somethig and cleanliness and happiness may go separate ways. But to know it reqiures determination and skills to make good connection to people who live there. Living in Cairo was for me exceptionaly demanting regarding working at the same time rewarding for local life conditions and trustworthy to me people. I found all that "mess" much more reasonable than in western countries. Surely driving car and walking requires new set of skills but life is for learning.

I visited Cairo and a town called Ismailia, Egypt back in 1991, because my mother married an Egyptian man and then they had two kids, and moved to Egypt, so I went to see them, and visit Egypt. It was an awesome trip! First of all, it was before the world changed, so that in itself made it great. I was able to smoke on the plane, which I enjoyed very much. We went to the Pyramids, The Egyptian Museum, to a bazaar, and for a faluka ride on the Nile. We went out to eat a few times, and just walked around downtown Cairo, too. I remember seeing goats and other animals, and I remember there being a lot of street cats. The Call to Prayer freaked me out the first time I heard it, but then I got used to it. I'm glad I went when I did, because I don't think I would be brave enough to travel anywhere in the Middle East right now. Also, I should mention, I never had to go anywhere without a family member that spoke fluent Arabic, so therefore, I never had any communication issues. I remember one day I wore a tank top and shorts, and I'll just say, if you are female, don't do that if you visit Egypt. It was not viewed as appropriate. ** I don't remember Cairo being super filthy, in general. It wasn't "clean", but I don't remember there being garbage everywhere. Could be which part of town you visit, maybe? 🤔 Or it might just be totally different today, just like the rest of the world has changed. I personally hate the way the world is today. Take me back to the 80's and 90's!

its because you are an idiot and you lack some knowledge. The small streets are part of ancient cities of Kathmandu valley whose town planning was done more than 3000 years ago. It is the only ancient city with ancient cultures that is still existing today. Those streets were never meant to be for driving cars. There are larger streets for chariots routes and small alleys and maze like planning for normal walking and horses. Small doors and alley ways to confuse any invading armies. Some of the best ancient and medieval towns are in Nepal. But maybe you visited those places recently which is after 2015 earthquake. There's constructions going on everywhere to rebuild the congested deep alleys with thousands of people commuting so it might feel disorderly. But once all the infrastructures and traditional Nepali aesthetics are applied, it will easily be the perfect ancient/medieval city in this modern world

As our guide explained, it's NOT GARBAGE they are collecting, sorting, and then selling, it is dry recyclable items of all sort, no food or anything that might attract rats. Entire families work in this business, the men collecting items and then selling sorted and bagged items, while women and yes children manually sort the stuff.

nice story, but its not what we call recycling, its garbage hustlers. REcycling is at totally another scale, hundreds of tonnes, not hundreds of KG, all these peopels do is sort through garbages to extract the more valuable and sell them. Air quality in CAiro is insanely bad, and most of the garbages (in mass) are burned, directly inside the city.

What today is left of the cities of ancient civilisations are temples, arches, palaces and villas of marble, but surely those cities had their slums as well as for instance can be seen in Pompei, Italy. The presence of those slums does not make those ancient civilisations less respectable, nor does make slums in cities of today the civilisation of the countries, in which those cities with slums can be be found, less respectable.

Wow, I never imagined to see such a dirty place, does the city never get cleaned or is it the people that don't care and throw in the road? Nice video of a very interesting capital.... Just a shame there is so much trash.

@MariamYasser-ii5so I've been to Egypt. I was in a resort and I enjoyed every moment of my holiday. I never visited Cairo but I did see the Giza Plateau, It was fascinating but I'm sorry to say that there was LOTS of trash there too, paper, plastic bottles, and all sorts buried in every corner of the ruins...

Did you go to America? A million homeless people and waste everywhere. Romania, Italy, and even France and Portugal are poverty and filth. Do not blame your racism on Islam when you know that the problems of the Arabs and Muslims are the Europeans and the Americans because of the occupation, wars, and their protection of the corrupt for their own interests.
