For over a decade, the K7 Suzuki GSX-R1000 has held its own on the street and in professional racing, still producing remarkable amounts of power and precise handling. For the man in the street, does he need to upgrade from the recently replaced GSX-R? That's a question we're about to find out in our three GSX-R comparison entitled "Upgrade Path."
Updated in 2017, the GSX-R1000R and GSX-R1000 are Suzuki's latest upgrades to their iconic GSX-R line. The differences between the two machines are minimal - namely that the "R" model comes equipped with an up and down quickshifter, as well as upgraded suspension components. The base model will save you a few thousand dollars, however, you'll be missing out on the aforementioned upgrades.
We compared Arthur's personal K7 Suzuki GSX-R1000 against the latest GSX-R offerings to see if it was still up to snuff. While there were some familiar feelings between all three machines, the K7 began to show its age immediately.
Between the electronic, engine and chassis updates, the new GSX-R's proved their worth immediately.

    I sold my 05 and upgraded to the 2016 model when they came out and it didn’t take me long to regret it. Sold it and now I’m on an 06. You just can’t go wrong the 05/06 1ks in my opinion

    So you choose to buy your bike in 2018 and have some harsh words for a fellow rider? My first bike was the gsxr 05-06 model when it came out I loved it. My next gsxr was the 07-08 model, I love it. Then then to me Suzuki took a left turn, now I want another, I lace my eyes set on that 2018 model 1000 but I’ll be keeping all three of them!

    Kinda trying to figure out if to get on 05 with 20,000kms on it. Or buy a new 2017 which cost 3x what the 05 is selling for at present.

    I don't know what but there is something special about the 05 and 06 models engine people for some reason always talk about those years. I wouldn't get the new gsxr1000 over an R1 or the fireblade that's for sure.

    @@thanosbustedinyourmum he said 2016 that's still the pervious gen, he just hasn't felt the NEW one clearly ;) shame they didnt wait one more year lol upgraded the lines to ss on my 2018 1000r and its absolutely perfect. So much power the entire way thru the rpm range its fantastic.

    I appreciate the video but I think having a heavily modified 07 gixxer and claiming it is virtually stock is ridiculous. I have an 07 zx10 with similar mods and the bike is a completely different bike

    You are correct; I apologize; I really don't know what I was thinking when I said that, as the statement is clearly ridiculous. Too late to change it now, but no, the bike is not stock, and is presumably much better than a stocker. Ho hum.

    Ok... I'm not a fan of rude comments but I can't let this pass. If you are going to take a 2k7 GSXR remove the clip ons and put those donkey bars on there... maybe you should just sell your bike and get a slingshot. That just looks ridiculous. I understand being comfortable but comfort is for Honda MOLDwing riders. That poor bike is dying on the inside. Maybe we can start a go fund me page for it so it can get a new owner. I'm sorry, that just bothers me.

    im in my 60s and own a 2001 Gixxer 1000 with high bars fitted to it [arthritus in L hand and busted up L knee] Guessin i wont be trading up any time soon still its nice to at least be able to check out the latest and the greatest so thanks guys for these neat videos.

    Like 6 in my sixties and run a K2,I retained the clip ons,fitted rear sets, and various other upgrades.I also have arthritis in my wrists and osteoporosis,but the suffering is worth it!.

    very, very few riders can ride to the point where the upgrades make a difference. it´s nice to have it if you can afford but silly to pay for if you can't use it. nice video. thanks

    So, how does the ride by wire feel on the new bikes? Is it as responsive as the cable on the old one? Does it lag? Smoothness and responsiveness aren't the same thing.

    I love it when people talk about suspension and have no idea what's inside a fork or shock. There hasn't been any leaps in suspension. The 07 is just a different motorcycle. In addition zero mention of the type of tires. I do like the look of the new gsxr...not so busy.

    Thanks guys, and thanks for highlighting two attributes of the gixxer that I really look for in a bike...throttle connection and suspension .I recently rode a gsxr1000r on one of my favorite roads and I've gotta agree with you on the throttle conection. Very accurate without any annoying and distracting jerkiness . The suspension on the bike I rode I suspect had been tweaked, and not in a good way, with the rear way to soft for my 190lb and therefore affecting the ride and handling negatively in numerous ways. I also noticed the shock in the R model is not able to be shimmed for ride height for fine tuning geometry which is a negative for us that like to tweak. Cheers, kev

    Thanks for the kind words Kev, appreciated. Just to let you know, the R suspension was a little soft when I first had it--in fact it was a little soft when I first rode the GSX-R1000R at the launch at Phillip Island this time last year, and I'm pretty much your weight. This will be covered in the full test we do of the bike, coming soon; however to give you a heads up now, I increased compression damping by half a turn in at the rear, and 1 full turn in at the front on each leg. The problem manifested itself as a shimmy at the front when coming out of very hard acceleration--especially if the front wheel was off the tarmac and maybe leaned over a little. It only happened at high speed, but it was somewhat unnerving. The increase in compression damping per above totally fixed it. Cheers!

    Thank you, appreciate the kind words! Yes, actually the test will be mainly (if not all) road usage. I have ridden the bike on track (ultimatemotorcycling.com/2017/02/11/2017-suzuki-gsx-r1000r-review-track-tested/) at Phillip Island and it was of course, amazing. However the street is probably where typical owners will spend a lot, if not most, of their time. Our brief rides so far on the street (including this review) have shown how good the new Gixxer is on street, and I put that down to the really comfortable ergonomics, amazing suspension, and super smooth throttling and gearbox.     G7- In very first part of video seems to be wearing pirelli supercorsa and then the next 30 seconds I see a Dunlop Q3+. I am assuming you guys had a chance to change the tire during the test. Any thoughts on SC v/s Q3+ ?

    Wow ...sharp eyes... You are correct sir! As mentioned, the bike is my personal machine and I have owned for ten years. In that time I have tested several different tires on the bike including Dunlop Q3 and Q3 Plus (on it now); Pirelli Supercorsa (ultimatemotorcycling.com/2016/10/07/pirelli-diablo-supercorsa-sp-tire-review-track-ready-street-legal/), and Metzeler M7RR (ultimatemotorcycling.com/2015/07/22/metzeler-sportec-m7-rr-review-better-than-a-dunlop-q3/ ). Each time I tested the tires I did it on the same bike, at Buttonwillow to try and compare like-with-like. The short answer to your question is that the Supercorsas are slightly softer compound than the Q3/Q3+ and so they grip a little better on track. However the Dunlop (of course) lasts longer. I got 2 track days and some street mileage out of the Pirellis, and 3 tracks days plus street mileage out of the Q3s. Without question the Dunlops are easily the best value and sacrifice very little in performance; the Pirellis are what you'll want if you're racing and need absolute best lap times. The Metzelers grip phenomenally well and last unbelievably well--but they don't have the carcass strength for maximum braking power at the track. So if you do very few track days but a lot of street riding, then they're a consideration for sure. At the Phillip Island launch of the R model we used Bridgestone R10R tires (race DOT) tires and they were of course, phenomenal (ultimatemotorcycling.com/2017/02/11/2017-suzuki-gsx-r1000r-review-track-tested/). Note that for track I typically drop (cold) pressures about 2 PSI at each end. Hope this helps and you figure out the best tire for you, thanks for asking. Cheers!

    The K7 did not come with TC, however the Bazzaz FiTC unit does have a rate-of-change TC. However it has to be mapped, and of course without individual wheel speed sensors or an IMU it isn't nearly as sophisticated as the modern stuff. It does work on track, however it really needs to be set up for each circuit. John Ethell at JETT Tuning mapped mine into a compromise setting and it does occasionally kick in. kzread.info?o=U&video_id=uHwWfAzjdV0 The new Gixxer (all models) of course come with a sophisticated 10 level TC that uses wheel sensors and an IMU to detect pitch, roll, and yaw. It does not have a separate wheelie control (I'm happy to say). Incidentally, if you like wheelies, you'll have to be in either TC1 (least intrusion) or have it off to wheelie; the other levels progressively inhibit wheelies the higher level you go. It is super-easy to change on the fly: kzread.info?o=U&video_id=PWMG5wyJB98 The TC works extremely well on track. I rode the Gixxer at Phillip Island last year at the launch in TC setting 2, and coming on to the main straight through the long left hand sweeper (about 120 mph) the rear was spinning and the TC light was flashing. I don't have the skills or balls to drift a bike at that speed on purpose, so I was impressed to see that the TC was definitely working and yet is so subtle that if it weren't for the dash light I'm not sure I'd have known. On that track anything more than level 4 was too intrusive and I could tell the bike was being held back coming out of corners. In my experience on the street, TC is insurance, that's about all. It is not a go faster tool like on track, it will *maybe* help prevent the rear stepping out if you hit a patch of tarmac that's more slippery than you thought. Apart from that, (and I haven't studied any data), to my knowledge, highsides on the street are very rare. We all tend to crash coming into a corner too hot and then can't make the exit; or we crash mid-corner cos it tightens up unexpectedly, and we dial in more lean angle and lose the front. Just my observation over the years. But, hey, if a bike has TC, it can't hurt on the street unless you're dumb enough to trust it blindly; I doubt many people do that, and that's a good thing! I don't judge, but if you're using TC on the street to go fast, then you're taking way too much risk and I'd say back your commitment down a notch or two. On the new Gixxer, If you have it set around 4 or 5 (depending on the roads you ride) you might still find that too intrusive. On this street test, we set the TC level at 1 (to allow wheelies) on both bikes. We rode on dry CA roads, and although we rode quickly, we didn't get crazy. The TC did not come on when I was riding, neither did it for the other guys. Bottom line is that TC is great to have if you're track day guy, and it's a little extra safety insurance if you're a fast street guy. Thanks for asking, I hope this helps. Stay safe out there!     Appreciate the video guys. I have the all black non-abs 2017 GSXR 1000. Purchased it last yr. I am very pleased with it. The power delivery from the new motor is awesome. And with it lighter & narrower. It's like throwing a 600 around on the curves. But with the 1000 power. And riding position is great. Just wish they would have given it alil more storage space under passenger seat. Just barely enough room for ins & reg cards, lol. I have also already up graded mine with an ECU flash, full Yoshimura Alpha T exhaust system, steel braided brake lines, Yoshimura undertail kit, & Techspec snake skin tank pads. I'm all Suzuki. And she looks good sitting beside my 01 TL1000R.

    Haha yes, we had the same thought with the storage space!! There is literally no room at all under there. Man, the rest of the bike sounds sweet though, perfect upgrades I'd say. I'm curious if the ECU flash did anything or was it a new map for the Yosh pipe? I know it de-restricts the motor and allows full butterfly opening at the top of the rev range (about another 17 hp I heard), but there's no way that's any use on the street--or is it? Did it affect the throttle connection or power delivery? Curious what you found.... Thanks.

    Ultimate Motorcycling I had mine flashed by Super Bike Unlimited. Informed them of my upgrades as far as exhaust, BMC air filter, & told them what I looked for. And they took care of it. And yes, it really made a difference. It defently woke her up some more. And also done things like disable O2 & servos due to Yoshimura exhaust. As far as throttle response. Its ride by wire. Doesnt get any better. Just mapping etc made it alil more snappy. And yes it can be alil much in town. But 26yrs riding experience helps. And TC is always on, lol. But on the mtns & open road its a beast. I've always have gotten ECU's flashed to preference on my bikes. Just never felt power commanders covered enough. But these bikes bone stock with a good slip on are track ready right off the show room floor. Maybe a Bazzaz fuel controller & on the fly map switch later would be plenty enough for most.

    I have a k6 (shock and fork pimped) and a L7 rr. The brakes of the L7 are way better and it is a saver ride with the L7 due to abs and traction control. But for the fun no one need's to upgrade.

    I kind of like that the price of 1000s is up a little higher it keeps new riders and 17 year olds from being able to get on one for the most part but it does make it more expensive for the rest of us so you gotta give and take.

    @@squeezylemons8357 that’s a very broad statement, I’ve been working since 16 brought my first car at 17 there’s many others like me... 18 your basically an adult and should be out of high school.. a credit card or two will build your credit enough.. I mean most of these motorcycle dealerships give out sweet deals anyway, let’s be real motorcycles don’t sell.. esp brand new, they’re just toys for the most part and especially sport bikes .. this is why you hear people getting insane deals on “leftovers” out the door... never the less private sales exist i just saw a 16 bmw s1krr with 5k miles for a asking price of 11k on Craigslist .. any kid that works a year/ yr and a half could save up and afford that bike lol

    I have an Arrow aftermarket exhaust, racing aftermarket suspension, Power commander, aftermarket quick shifter..Racing tyres..new windscreen.. but my bike is fairly stock 😎😎 Jokes apart.. Review is nice though... 👍

    138mph ? Come on you should be at 160-170mph on that thing. I got 150mph on a 2000 cbr600f and 165mph (b road) on a GSXR 1000 K7. 138 is a stroll.

    Sorry guys, but you're both wrong. That's the whole point here. A month ago I would have totally agreed with you, but riding the new bikes proved to me how wrong I was, and it was frikkin obvious. Believe me, I wanted to be right! On the street "keeping up with" is down to the rider, not the machine, and you're clearly pretty skilled riders. I can however guarantee you're working harder and taking more risk than if you were riding a new model at the same speed on the same road. On the track, you would without a doubt set a much faster lap time on the new bike than on your K3 or K5/K6 (I had a K5 before my K7 incidentally). Sorry to be brutal, but I had to face it too with my beloved K7. The older bikes are just nowhere near as good and it is very, very obvious within the first 100 yards of riding one.

    It's always amazed me how they keep improving bikes. My first Gixxer was a new '87 GSX-R1100 (the old slabside) ... yeah, I'm that old LOL. But at the time I remember thinking it was the perfect motorcycle... I wondered how they'd ever be able to improve on it, it was so good ...but they do, and we as riders reap the benefit :) Cheers

    I honestly have a hard time believing the claims in this video. I have owned over seven different 1000cc models over the past decade including new models and they are all so friggin close. The differences are so minimal that you have to be nit picking issues on the modded k7 or you’re trying to promote suzuki’s new motorcycles because sales are down.

    I can see why you'd be skeptical but really, we all felt it. There is an enormous difference. I found it interesting because normally we tend to test things in a vacuum and are expected to tell that the new whizz-bang-latest for XYZ company is that much better. But this time we got to try the old (albeit highly tweaked) against the new, and the differences were blatantly huge. So I decided to put this comparo together because I figured no one would believe me, and I drafted in my buddy who is a dyed in the wool Yamaha R1 owner. And he felt the same as both myself and Nic.

    There is almost no difference between the bikes in past 10-12 years, except electronics. The new ones feel smooth because they are new and didn't see much life. And I am not even talking about what kind of a monster bike you could make upgrading you older bike with all that money you save after not buying a new bike.

    Audio is terrible but to the topic...I wish Suzuki updated their 600/750cc with all the goodies of those new 1000R. Honestly, all that power is not really needed in the street. I've been waiting patiently on new 600's from the different manufacturers to upgrade. The one turn off of the new 1000R is the mirrors, it makes it look cheap.

    hi guys love the channel at the start of the video you say that the gsxr's are easy to ride i am a new rider and have never rode a super sports i was just wondering if they are new rider friendly or would you recommend starting on something different its just i love the look of super sports especially the gsxr's thanks

This is a tough question to answer individually without knowing more details such as the type of traffic conditions you would ride in, and about you personally and your general level of coordination and your tolerance to risk. But broadly speaking, yes, there are lots of people out there who started out on a 600 supersport bike and did just fine. However, I'd recommend you think very carefully about what you want out of motorcycling, and frankly I'd always recommend a less powerful and more forgiving bike for a beginner to develop their survival skills and reactions, than a true supersport. Once riding becomes second-nature to you, then you can start looking for ways to improve and extend your own performance on a more powerful bike. So when I say 'easy to ride' we're really aiming that comment at expert-level riders with plenty of experience, and those type of riders will find the GSX-R has great ergonomics (so the rider will be comfortable--not to be underestimated!) and the controls, including the throttle fueling are all smooth, so there are no big surprises. The handling is very neutral, so the bike doesn't flop into corners, nor is it reluctant to turn; it is very precise. So any experienced rider will find the GSX-R to be pleasant and comfortable, so they can focus on the track or the road conditions and not find themselves trying to control a bike that isn't doing quite what they expect. So it's all a matter of degrees. I'd hate for you to buy a SS bike and then find it awkward and challenging to ride--that ends up not being fun. So be careful what you wish for.... Good luck!

    thanks for the quick reply this definitely helped a lot . i did do all my lessons and test on a Cagiva Raptor 1000cc and was ok with the power and handling of that but was just not sure if i would be ok on a super sport i think i might just start out on a 600 cc and go from there just to be safe thanks again keep up the great content on your videos really good stuff :)

    Happy to help! If you're used to 1000cc power you'll be fine on a SS bike. It makes power differently than the v-twin so you'll find it takes a little bit of getting used to, but that's a performance issue, not a safety issue.

    Think im good with my black 42k miles oldlady k6 with sc project titanium full on system and horrible fueling k5k6 delivery😂. Never skipped a beat. Will destroy everything in matters of street acceleration

    Matt Bager funny thing is none of this bikes are made for track. Suzuki will always be superior street bike but on track needs a lot of work. And how many of us really ride in a track or rev limits on a daily basis perhaps just 1% the rest of us are pure street riders with gsxr 70% of their lifespan inbetween 2-6000 rpm hahaha I still havent seen one solid street review for the gixxer or the k7 really. The best review ever made and the best ad for suzuki imho was the baron's super old video with his k5 in that mud hell. After all the abuse suzuki k5 never gave up hahaha

    Kinda sad, not for suzuki, but for the entire bike industry that the only thing that has improved since 2005 is suspension/computing. The 2005-2008 gsx-r1000 will still beat a 2023 bike. #NewSucks
