Always appreciate your dedication to these suitcase and lower end players... Woulda liked for you to play the "damaged record" on another player, be curious to hear the level of "groove damage." As well, could be helpful for others to hear what "groove damage" sounds like... People often forget that the average vintage records was likely played on a heavy tracking record changer back in the day, and people often were not really good about changing stylus' back then either. Though in all fairness, I'd personally rather a vintage BSR over this Victrola (kind of a "Duh" statement). Keep up the fine work sir!

Love Mancini. I was surprised when you said “It had quite a bit of organ mixed in, and like my dad I don’t care for organ much.” Ha! I actually seek out those mid century lounge/jazz style records specifically with organ!! I’ve picked up some really great ones recently for pennies. BTW, that Crosley Collegiate I bought off your recommendation last year has played hundreds of records flawlessly!! Definitely a hidden gem amongst inexpensive players.

Honestly, I’m no super expert, but I wouldn’t think 6.5g would do such immediate and noticeable damage. I’d look at the stylus itself, or check to see if it’s “skating” like crazy. I do have an old Caliphone with the clunky Bakelite tone arm and I measured it at 9.7g of force. I don’t use it anymore because of that, but it didn’t do any noticeable damage. Curious to see if you find anything specifically wrong with this player. ;)

I agree. I think it's a bad stylus and/or a skating force problem. If you don't have one, perhaps the purchase of an inexpensive USB digital microscope could help shed some light on the problem. Actually, the use of a digital microscope to inspect a stylus would be a good subject for a future video.

So anyway, I pick out this unit made by Soundesign. A few months later Consumer Reports test combo units. Turns out this one tracked at an amazing 11grams. I still have some of those records. I had the worst BsR turntable in a Riviera music center, the turntable had a s shaped tone arm and a tetrad cartridge weighed to 3.5 g, but the bad part was the plastic platter which left permanent marks on the vinyls and being plastic the motor noise was severely transferred making inaudible low volume records

Thank youfor a great informative video. It crossed my mind when I saw the headshell and cartrigde that more plastic part were added to what it is used too. It looks better to the customer when it is sold. But this extra plastic, maybe it causes the tracking force to be higher than usual for these suitcase players. If it is poosible to remove that part, maybe the tracking force will be less. This is just a thought from me. All the very best to you.

I would argue that there could very well be something wrong with the stylus on this player. While 6.5 grams is definitely not good, it doesn't seem like it would really be enough to cause this much damage to your record. Considering that these ceramic cartridges can technically track at 6 grams, it seems problematic that you're having this issue.

I can’t figure out why everyone is so fascinated with the suitcase record players. They made sense back in the 60s when there were no cassette walkmans‘s or portable CD players or even smart phones and MP3 players like we have today. If you’re wanting to listen to a record today you’re more than likely going to sit at home and play it not carry it all over the place so these don’t make a whole Lotta sense in today’s world wouldn’t you wanna just get a nice one for your desk that you could sit down and it would be connected to your hi-fi system with your speakers. I don’t know I don’t think I’ll ever figure out why people like them so much I don’t like them they’re not really good quality and I don’t think they ever were Not even back in the 60s where they were popular

@@Recordology I think that's because they are inexpensive and most people don't know what they are doing or looking at especially the younger generation that didn't grow up with them. too many people have the mentality of it cheep easy and plays records and its wrong. well whatever makes everyone happy I guess. I plan to invest in better equipment as many of the records I play or have are not cheep and I want to take care of them as well as get better sound and more value out of the record. thanks for the reply I really enjoy hearing back as its rare to hear from you tubers anymore which I understand if you have 100k+ subs. I don't find this a junky record player. In fact, I 👍 like EVERY sticker on this thing. I should tease ya, and say they give ya enough stickers to decorate 45 45 RPM records, since this thing plays 45's. I found a Crosley at 👍 Goodwill a couple years ago, and I hated how they ruined their Crosley AM/FM 📻 radio/record player combination with them. Had it 👎 not been filled with these hideous stickers, I would have bought it for the $29.99 that 👍 Goodwill was asking. Yours are the most interesting stickers. Your friend, Jeff.

I have a few comments about your video. On the Judy Collins' record, you put your fingers on the grooves. If you do that (and I know you don't), it's a no-no. As far as the scale goes, it must be at the same height of your TT to get an accurate reading. I put squares of cardboard under the scale to raise it up. VWestlife's name is Kevin. Take a look at his video "Will cheap record player DESTROY your vinyl?" It's very interesting. VWestlife is gay (I am gay myself) and he has a video on coming out. As far as interesting finds in your record collection, I have a story to tell. I've got many classical albums. One I have is "Concertos for Cello" by Antonio Janigro and the Solisti di Zagreb. I''ve had it for years, but never played it. It's an RCA Living Stereo from 1960. (Living Stereo, I think, are the best stereo recordings ever.) It's fantastic. I don't know why I waited so long to put it on my TT. Anyways, the inner sleeve is original and has on one side "What is Stereophonic Sound?" As stereo was available to the general public in 1958 one can see why this was necessary. On the other side are titles available on RCA. I was looking at it today and what should I find? "Mr. Lucky!" I looked it up on Amazon and it's about nine bucks. I was thinking about getting it, but I dislike organ, too. At least in pop music. (Bach is a different story.) I have Mancini's albums of Peter Gunn. (If you can get one, it will blow you away.) I have one more Mancini album, "The Versatile Henry Mancini" on Liberty from 1959. Versatile is right. It's awful. It's a tropical theme and it says on the back, "Lou Maury's tasty organ stylings." Never, absolutely never, get an album that has "stylings" on the back! Stay safe, my friend.
