Worst Pro-Choice Argument I've EVER Seen

K Hole Adventurer uses an analogy to show that the pro-life position is silly-that it’s kind of like arguing for the rights of a worm. Now, an argument from analogy is a special kind of inductive argument. Basically, it reasons that because two things are similar, what is true of the first is also true of the second.
Of course, no analogy is perfect-there will always be differences. But for an argument from analogy to work, the similarities have to be significant and the differences have to be superficial. But if the opposite is true-if the differences are significant and the similarities are superficial-well, then, we have a problem.
Unfortunately for K Hole, this is a false analogy. The argument doesn’t work because tapeworms and humans are really different. The similarities are superficial, but the difference is a big deal. And you already know what it is. It’s the difference between the value of worms and the value of humans. Killing a worm is not the same as killing a human being.
But there’s a second problem. The analogy misunderstands the pro-life argument. We are not saying that anything inside your body with a heartbeat that feels pain has a right to life. We are not pro-life because something has a heartbeat, or feels pain, or is inside your body. We are pro-life because abortion kills a human being inside her own mother’s body. Our argument is that human beings at any stage of development have intrinsic value and should not be killed.
So, the tweet uses a faulty analogy to argue there’s an inconsistency in the pro-life view. But there is nothing inconsistent about pro-lifers being against killing human beings who are intrinsically valuable and being for killing tapeworms because they’re just worms. Get it?

It's one of those things that's so stupid it blows my mind someone even thought it was a valid argument. Also my pregnancy experience, although it's just the beginning, has really opened my eyes to just how evil abortion is. I had my first sonogram this week and got to see my baby kicking around and moving. Its super tiny right now but you cannot convince me that what I saw wasn't a living developing human. How much evil has to be in your heart to see so little value in a growing human life? Especially at a time when that human needs you to protect it the most.

    @DivineDefecation That is a foolish thing to say. You have evidently misinterpreted what I have said. The *human body* is biologically ordered towards childbearing and not hosting parasites. Whilsts some parasties are good at living in humans, it does not follow that the human body is ordered towards them - only that they are suited to live in us. My argument is about the human body in relation to tapeworms, not vice versa.

  • @jimcook1747

    @jimcook1747

    @DivineDefecation Procreation is the primary end of sexual inercourse, it is the purpose for which it evolved. You agree with me in that human beings are ordered towards child bearing, as are animals which give live birth. However, we are not evolved to be hosts of parasites. It doesn't follow that because childbearing can be dangerous, that babies should be murdered. If that is not your point then it is entirely irrelevant to include it.

  • @jimcook1747

    @jimcook1747

    3 жыл бұрын

    @DivineDefecation You are equivocating "labour" (which means work) and the "labour" pains of childbirth, that is fallacious. Indeed, merely killing someone isn't murder but intending to kill an innocent human life and pursuing that end is murder. I'm not referring to murder in civil criminal law, but as a moral act - the civil law does not always accord with morality. The danger of an act does not determine whether the human body is ordered to the act. The body has evolved to reproduce and childbearing is part of this. From a purely materialist evolutionist perspective, even, the purpose of the human would be to reproduce. The human body has not, however, evolved to be a parasite carrier. That some parasites have evolved to live inside humans is a moot point.

  • @jimcook1747

    @jimcook1747

    3 жыл бұрын

    @DivineDefecation I didn't say that. What I said is that civil laws do not necessarily accurately reflect morality - I did not imply that I wouldn't have those who perform it punished. Pleasure is not the primary end of sex, humans would still need to have sex to reproduce even if they derived no pleasure from it. It should be forseen by those engaged in sex that their acts will ordinarily lead to reproduction because that is the primary end of the life. A third human life should not be punished for the misdeeds of both parents, especially when considering that the parent has a greater moral responsibility towards her child by virtue of proximity. Why should the unborn human be punished for the mother not wanting to take moral responsibility?

  • @CelticSpiritsCoven

    @CelticSpiritsCoven

    3 жыл бұрын

    @DivineDefecation A fetus is a living human. It isn't dead, it isn't a dog or a cat. It's human in an early stage of the human life cycle. A toddler is in an early stage of the human life cycle too. Your semantics regarding "choice of body" is illogical. I propose that a homeless person is no human, and no law can stop my body choice of taking a knife and stabbing them. The sinner always changes definitions of words to suit their needs. Hitler stole the Democrats ideals and replaced the word "negro" with the word "jew" so that he had a LEGALLY RECOGNIZED REASON to kill jews. It would have been outrageous if he made it up, so that's why the Nazi's looked elsewhere. And they found that since Democrats in America viewed black people as less than human, Hitler could argue with the world forum that some people are not human, and that this idea is accepted already in the world because of American Democrats who have slaves. Don't sit there and tell us about "a woman's body has a choice to kill a baby". Why are you playing god and deciding who is allowed to be human and who is not> Democrats --- they have loved defining who is human since they took their slaves. That party and it's adherents have never changed. I don't have the bodily autonomy to kill a homeless person, so a woman doesn't have the bodily autonomy to kill a baby. Simple. Be consistent. Baby killer advocates deserve no respect, as it is clear that something that kills humans at a ~99% death rate is something that deserves no support. Hope you aren't one of those idiots wearing a mask as you are walking down a sidewalk while hoping that covid-tainted air doesn't blow around you. Abortionists = low informed people stealing from god, with no actual morals.

    Bang on, as always, Mr. B (Tim). Your "rebuttal" today of K-Hole Adventurer - who merely succeeded in revealing him / herself to be a rather shallow thinker - reminded me of what St. Paul warned about (almost 2,000 years ago, no less!) in his Second Epistle to Timothy: "For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear." (2 Timothy 4:3; NIV) Indeed, St. Paul could, arguably, have been referring directly to all those who espouse the "Pro-Choice" viewpoint, when he also wrote earlier on in the same epistle to Timothy: "But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God." (2 Timothy 3:1-4; NIV) 2,000 years and so little has changed... To be sure, as King Solomon observed nearly 3,000 years ago: "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun." (Ecclesiastes 1:3; NIV) Come, Lord Jesus, come quickly.

    If I may be so bold as to suggest you missed one. In his last sentence he said that the worm deserved a choice. "Choice" is their argument, not ours. In their argument it is the mother who is supposed to have the choice, not the child. So is he comparing the mother to the worm, or equating the child to the mother, or admitting that the child should have a choice? It's complete nonsense. This kind of schizophrenic stupidity makes me angry and want to break things. I appreciate your sanity and logic.

In their worldview, this analogy is perfectly fine because even adult humans are no more valuable than the tape worm. We’re both just clumps biological material in different phases of the evolutionary process. Neither has any intrinsic value. For example, you'd need to have two groups of at least 1000 patients each, all of whom had the same ailments, all of whom were of about the same age range and about the same general health status, and who had been screened against medication-seeking-behavior and other anomalies. Then you would need for each person in the non-control group to receive X number of prayers per day by the same group of praying individuals over the course of the study, using a prayer method previously chosen (i.e. recited prayer, recitation of the rosary, lighting of a candle, free-style prayer, a set prayer devised by the testers, etc). Then and only then could you come to a conclusion that was scientifically valid. Even then, attempts at studying the effects of prayer are all flawed, not only because they cannot achieve scientific rigor, but because the reduce the effect of divine interactions with humans to a simple gumball-machine. As a biologist who is also a Christian I have to say that tapeworms not having hearts not only shows this as a bad analogy but the person who posted it has no idea of what they are talking about. Also, pre-born babies result from an activity that is usually consensual (or at the very least known to have occurred) whereas tapeworms in one's gut result from eating food that has eggs or small tapeworms in it. Not only do most people not know that they are eating contaminated food but many experience no symptoms even while the worm grows within them while most pregnant women tend to know that something is growing inside of them.

    @@andrewrogers3067 This may come off as a bit preach-y so I apologize if it does, I just wanted to give my opinion about stuff idk 🤷 I think there is always a tendency for us to separate wrongness into two categories, acceptable/pardonable wrong and a more heinous wrong. “Acceptable” wrong is when something is dumb or wrong, but it’s something we can relate to, and thus accept. But, the other kind of wrong is something that is far outside of the bounds of what we can relate to and what we consider ok that it becomes unacceptable. This is because when someone is stupid or wrong to a degree that we would never go to, (because of personal conviction or because of insight) we tend to (subconsciously) deem them as inhuman, or not having the same, normal thoughts as everyone else. But when people do wrong, or think incorrectly, it usually means they’re for the most part normal, but have a warped or different perspective about reality, not to say they’re justified of course, I’m just humanizing their situation. This is also why I think we often get surprised when people we deem as “evil” express normal characteristics, like living normal lives, being helpful, and even being heroic. I know I used to (before properly converting to Christianity) consider lying to be ok, so long as it didn’t hurt anyone and it being an “unnecessary” cost to myself for telling the truth, so if I had missed school because I didn’t have someone to drive me or something, my mom would lie by saying I was sick, since that would be a valid excuse for me being absent. I now believe that lying is a sin, a heinous one at that, and it isn’t justified for the “greater good”. But, there was this one guy that I know of who was kind, funny, and helpful, he was somewhat of a hero as well, he helped other people even if it came at the expense of himself, another thing about him was that he cheated on his wife with several other women… This doesn’t discount all the other good things about him, those were all very real and authentic, he was genuinely a helpful, heroic person, but in that one way he was genuinely despicable. I realized that the same way in which I viewed lying, or for that matter, any “pardonable” or “understandable” evil was the same way that guy viewed cheating on his wife, while most people would think that was abhorrent, he didn’t see it as any different than I used to see lying to escape academic punishment. And that in just the same way, I viewed bitterness, lying, deceit, pride, etcetera as “pardonable” or “understandable”, but God viewed them as on-par with adultery or cheating on someone, and that just as that guy was ignorant, I was too. So I’ve learned that although what people deem as “acceptable” and what people deem as “heinous” may differ, that ultimately, we all are humans with similar minds, but with warped perspectives, all being as unjust as an adulterer, but our minds being so warped as to not understand it.
