WORST 4K BLU-RAY YET? | GHOST IN THE SHELL ANIME 4K ULTRAHD BLU-RAY REVIEW

Ойын-сауық

soulintake I haven’t seen the 4k transfer personally. But what I have seen is the standard Blu-ray release multiple times. And as soon as the 4k started, I could see distinctive differences. The image is much sharper and the colors look much deeper and defined. To someone like Jeff who has never seen the movie or who doesn’t watch a lot of old anime, it could be really easy to write this movie off as a letdown. But if you’re an anime fan or a Ghost in the Shell fan, this release is definitely for you. The 4k disc had me thinking it has been released in the last few years.

@@JeffRauseo - Since when do you judge a 4K Blu-ray transfer by its source material? Never. This transfer adds much more detail than any Blu-ray of Ghost in the Shell and the HDR adds deeper blacks and brighter highlights than previously seen at home with this faithful-to-the-original transfer. This is a faithful transfer of the original for the first time in HD or UHD, if you want a juiced-up, inaccurate version grab Ghost in the Shell 2.0 Blu-ray.

@@JeffRauseo I think it works, given the kind of urban future the director is depicting. A film where that kind of subdued colour scheme doesn't work for me is Snyder's Man of Steel. That p.o.s. film is still a drag to watch, and I saw parts of it on a 4K screen. I think the overcast scenes in "Sling Blade" would look better in 4K. Overcast Smallville in M.O.S. is puke.

@filmsathome Unless you want them to completely redo the colour palette as they did with Terminator 2, I don't get how you can say it's a bad disc. It's faithful to the source material and original look of the film. If you think the colour palette us subdued, that's fine, but your issue should be with the artistic choice of the production team not the 4k blu ray, which is merely recreating this vision.

PSA: The regular blu-ray they sell by itself for this movie is unfortunately NOT from the same master as the 4K version or the HD version that comes with the 4K. The earlier blu-ray is windowboxed (black border on all four sides of the screen) and has very inaccurate subtitles. If you want the best version of this movie on blu-ray you have to get the 4K one, even if you aren't gonna watch it in 4K.

I thought this was a nice upgrade over the previous Blu-ray, which looked muddy to me. The HDR doesn’t get used to alter the image with exceedingly bright highlights that alter the original aesthetic. Normally, I am skeptic of 2D 4K HDR releases, but I truly liked this presentation. The audio is not that immersive though. If you’re a fan I recommend it.

4K is literally doubling the resolution of blu-Ray. It is inherently better. People just want to see more of a jump but going from SD, standard definition, to HD, high definition, is never going to be copied. That literally was the first time these films were being released with half the quality of the film stock. 4K is giving those films the full quality they have. Transfers can be bad because anything can be bad but 4k is inherently better than blu-Ray.

Thanks for the review! I haven't seen this film in awhile, but I can see why you're disappointed with the HDR. This film just doesn't have many high dynamic range scenes. And I think you're right about the haze being an artistic choice. It creates an environment. It's an animation version of how light affects a camera lens. Imho, not every scene should have deep blacks or bright bright whites. It's not uncommon for movie scenes to have low contrast on purpose. If every 4k HDR release had full hdr scenes, we'd be getting something way different than the version the creator(s) intended. Funny side note. About that little kung fu movie clip you threw in. I have always been a fan of this franchise, and it's quite frustrating that, down through the years, we keep getting imperfect or incomplete versions of this release. Ok, so first of all thank you for your channel and the constant updates in content. On this review, I do think you’ve dropped the ball. The presentation is consistent with anime from the 80s/90s and anyone who watched Manga VHS titles in this time period would know that. The subdued colour palette is standard and is part of the look. Having watched this 4k disc today, I conclude that you’re way off with your criticism. It’s an accurate representation of the original look of the movie and very close to the way it would look if viewed in a cinema environment.

Wish I had watched this review before buying the 4K. I just watched it and agree 100% with what you say. However, based on the comments below, it seems like it is still a better transfer than what was previously available. I think the film looked fantastic, I just agree that there was nothing "4K" about it. But if that's what it takes to preserve this film and give us a transfer that the film deserves, then i guess I'm happy I got the 4K.

I think his main problem is he did no research regarding this title. His claims are likely far off base. I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know anything about it. But it's obvious he doesn't do a lot of ground work, hence some of these videos are lackluster. If you want to do a true review of a transfer, you don't simply just take into account the 4K without also doing a thorough watch of past releases. I've read/heard these budget tvs don't have proper HDR, nor whatever other perk a 4K UHD HDTV comes with. He also mentions upscaling, which is what these tvs do instead of showing actual UHD...! I just read this regarding someone's disagreement with him with regards to his throwing shade towards Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket 4K. The person complained he didn't do any research and gave a 4/5 review of a 4K with supposedly lackluster HDR, when the original intent wasn't to give the movie a great color scheme, but to be gritty. Films at Home another another subscriber gave the poster flack, telling them they didn't know the director's intent, yet it has been made public. I don't think my tv has actual compatible HDR, or UHD, because it's an IPS display, which has the dreaded IPS glow from the corners during darker scenes, thus you can't truly get the great looking images from it. LG, bottom lit. I did a little research before I bought it a couple years ago, and now I wish I'd had put in just a bit more, because it's been a hassle. I haven't actually watched a 4K UHD on it yet, so I could be missing out, and it might look better than I think currently because of the flaws of the tv. Anime is an entirely different beast when it comes to mastering quality. The genre conforms to purists who want exactly what they saw on original broadcast, just in higher res. So dynamic effects or remastering color pallets is out of the question if it is to be taken seriously. This is only when they do it right, though. There are many examples of anime releases where the remastering is just horrendous because some one had a "vision" for what it should look like. Funimation being a huge offender with their Dragonball Z releases never fully offering what the community actually wants.

Dolby Vision is better than HDR10+ the fact that the Dolby vision is busted is shit, especially when you pay two grand or more for a high end OLED tv. You shouldn't put Dolby Vision in if it does nothing to enhance colors, blacks and highlights, thats why you buy a 4k uhd and play it on a high end UHD player. The Dolby Atmos being weak is no excuse, this version of the release is basically false advertising, do not advertise Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos when you fail to provide both.

I just think you were way over your head and were expecting to much out of this one. Anime is a completely different beast in terms of how it’s going to look in terms of video quality; it all boils down to how the transfer was done and this one was done masterfully. First, when you say that you do not think "the source allowed for it," I hope that you understand 4k would be a downgrade if the master was preserved. High Definition 4K is an upgrade from broadcast Television, not Film. (Web Spec: 35mm film has a resolution of approximately 5.6K - equivalent to an image of about 5,600 × 3,620 pixels. Another: Based on converted measures, a 35mm frame has 3 to 12 million pixels. Whichever of those you feel is more accurate, 4K digital cinema image has a resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels.) I liked the comment that there was a "Dolby Vision" flicker issue. However, I thought Dolby Vision was a transfer to make blacks darker, colors pop... but there is a Dolby Vison "Mode?" I do not understand. It appears to me like fluorescent lighting where there is a claim the "glow" is distracting. I would like to know what songs were changed. Would these be different from other American NTSC releases, or just the Japanese version? I was most interested in the Dolby Atmos upgrade. Did it work well and seem natural? You say you did not hear bass? I heard another review say the helicopter scenes utilized Atmos. (sounds above you) Some scenes did not seem natural. Can you elaborate on this or are you not wired for Dolby Atmos? Are you calibrated for THX picture and sound? Thank you for the review.

Say it how you see it - for anime, maybe try some Studi Ghibli like Laputa, Kiki's Delivery Service, or Porco Rosso, or if they're too sweet try Cowboy BeBop

@@JeffRauseo I'm thinking sooner or later. They will most likely will release it on 4K in a box set. Either a Volume set or just a box set. Or maybe just make a new Blu-Ray box set. But the films are remastered in 4k.

I tried out the iTunes version, it looks and sounds ok. The Blu Ray version is still the best.

Ghost in the Shell constantly gets screwed over quality wise in the West. I haven't seen a single good DVD or Blu Ray that does the animation justice. I recommend fans just buy the Japanese version. Japanese Blu-rays, not DVDs though, can play in U.S. Blu-ray players as they use the same region.

I didn't want to believe it, but you were right. The 4K image looks terrible. The Blu-ray on this edition looks so much better.

Sounds like a mediocre release, but also sounds like you really didn’t like the stylized look of the film. Fair enough. It’s not for everyone.

Great movie. You’re fine with the streaming version probably. I really bought it just for the steel book.

Good review thanks for your honesty i’m really disappointed to hear that this 4K version is crap.I’ve been a long time fan of go to the Shell so I’ll just keep my Previous Blu-ray steel book addition and not bother to upgrade because I personally own I think the 20th anniversary of ghost in shell.
