HappyConsoleGamer you're too awesome man. You have the knowledge and storytelling ability to put my passion into words. I have to show your videos like this to my mates!! Haha. It gets them as hyped as me for the greatness of these anime/games. Anyways, thanks again. Your videos are pretty much my favourite things to watch for nostalgia/hype/knowledge/comfort reasons

I just love these old school anime videos, since no one else talks about these (at least not in high quality videos like this). Sometimes you say 'I could go on about this, but I won't', no PLEASE DO. Ramble on endlessly. We love hearing you talk about them. I'd say select less shows and movies per part and just talk to your hearts content if that's what it takes. Anyway, thanks for being awesome as always.

I do enjoy a lot of new anime, but the anime of 1980s and 90s has a more human and charming feeling to them. You can see the flaws and the pencil/paint strokes of the artist. Mazinger Z, Armored Trooper Votoms, Fist of the Northstar, Getter Robo and Hajime no Ippo are some of my favorites.

Important and cool thing about Macross Plus that can get overlooked at times is it was the directorial debut of Shinichiro Watanabe who went on to direct Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo (and more of course) and the first series with a Soundtrack fully by Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Conplex, Wolfs rain, etc). Not just a great series but an important one as well.

Yay you finally talked about Patlabor, my favorite anime! I agree with your view. Patlabor is not about robot but story and characters. Actually my favorite episode of TV series doesn't even contain any mech scene (in this episode, the members of the labor team just wait for food delivery that they ordered...). My favorite Patlabor is The Movie 2 that also doesn't contain many mech scenes but I absolutely love it. The music, the atmosphere... just beautiful.

Black Magic M66, well familiar with it as the old fart that i am :) Got the VHS,The DVD and the Manga of Black Magic M66, glad to see it get some love, it still holds up and i still enjoy it after all this time. I can't deny how much of an impact Project A-Ko has had, it's been quite hard to ignore and so evident, however it did not have that influence on me myself but i saw it and it had an impact on other peoples art, i certainly liked it and it had an impact on me in another way but not when it came to my artstyle or what i wanted to create. I got into Anime a bit earlier, the first one i saw was back around 83 and from there on i saw more throughout the eighties and did not get to A-ko until the probably around the very start of the 90'ts. My influence was more Go nagai, Leiji Matsumoto, Shotaro Ishinomori and people like that and then the more ultra violent stuff and obscure Anime came in around the start of the 90'ts when i started hunting for bootleg tapes and saved up money for expensive imports :D Yes why the hell have we not gotten an official real release of Arion! It's a crime :) I still have my old early VHS tapes of Gall Force so yes i remember it well Johnny, i pretty much remember all of these old forgotten moldy and wonderful animes that had a real soul and aura of passion and REAL hard work behind it :) Maross Plus is excellent, what an achievement it was and still is. I like everything Patlabor, all good stuff in my anime book and i like that it is slow and takes it's time building the story and atmosphere :) I been meaning to watch Escaflowne again, also have not seen it since about the time it came out, very good series. Always great to hear some talk and love about some good old anime it reminds me of my own past and my love and passion for this sort of stuff. Great video Johnny, keep the love and passion alive brother!

Just a heads up to any Canadian anime fans in the comments. If you have a valid Library card, you can rent digital streamed copies of some of the anime Johnny has mentioned previously, completely for free, on the "Hoopla Digital" service. Their selection of anime is limited, but they change it up from time to time. In previous months, they've had things like: Captain Tylor, Star Blazers, Ghost in the Shell, Macross Plus and Street Fighter Alpha The Animation. As of writing this, you can now borrow: Otaku No Video, Bubblegum Crisis (as well as Bubblegum Crash, and the spin-off series A.D. Police Files), Trigun: Badlands, Riding Bean, among others.

I had Escaflowne on VHS it was the very first version recorded from a local tv network that aired animes. The later releases were butchered to death so I gave up on re-watching it for years and years now. I as well wait on the bluray editions to see if everything is original in there and getting then those to finally re-watch everything in original form.

Project A-ko was originally an entry in the hardcore Cream Lemon hentai series (hence the suggestive relationship between A-ko, B-ko and C-ko), but the production team saw its potential to be more of a fun and wacky adventure, and just ran with that instead. I've only seen the first entry of Gall Force, which was pretty cool sci-fi, but gets reaaally weird by the end. My brother loves Captain Tylor. I have to watch it sometime, but he highly recommends it. If you like light-hearted, theatrical adventure, it's supposed to be a great introduction to 90's anime. Captain Tylor is still published from Nozomi (Right Stuf), so you can still buy it pretty easily from them. I picked up both of those Patlabor movie boxsets for $10 each. Apparently they had flooded the market with copies and had too much stock on hand, so the publisher wound up selling the sets discounted to distributors throughout the country. I lucked out on the timing when I picked it up. They recently released blu-rays of it, along with the OVA and TV series. Also, an animation expo event in Japan recently released a cool 10 minute Patlabor "Reboot" animation a few months back. It's not available for viewing online anymore, but you can see the trailer for it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/YoN-taZ8ebrHgNY.html The Escaflowne blu-ray is already out. They had this AMAZING trailer for the release (with a new dub) that's freaking incredible to watch: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pKmVl6anmKXOY7Q.html Classic show, with some awesome presentation. Old school anime is awesome.

@HappyConsoleGamer Escaflowne already got a Blu-Ray release late last year and it was redubbed as far as I know.

Connor Waltman If you backed it on Kickstarter you could get it with both dub tracks. The regular retail release only has new Dub.

I had watched about 90% of those (but some were never released here in UK) I whole heartily agree with you about Project AKo such a classic (Black Magic M-66 is also great) Escaflowne is still one of my favourites (I had imported the DVDs from USA before they were released here in the UK) Some of my other favourites from back in the day are Dominion Tank Police & 3x3 Eyes ^_^

I remember Escaflowne being on Fox Kids Saturday mornings for about 3 or 4 weeks, they didn't even air the first episode because of how violent it was, someone must have just seen animation and mechs and thought it was meant for kids, good times.

I was hoping you'd talk about Vision of Escaflowne. Have you watched the movie The Girl from Gaia? It is an excellent retelling of the show.

I've never seen "Riding Bean", but I love "Gunsmith Cats". It's from the same guy, with similar characters.

I recommend City Hunter, been watching recently and it's very good, old school detective/crime series from 88', with a lot of inspiration from Lupin the III, and an awesome ED.
