‘Worsening’ international context and ‘uncertainty’ about Nato behind defence spending uplift

"It does mean a significant uplift in the level of defence spending…It's a response to a worsening international environment.”
Uncertainty about the US’s future in Nato and a “worsening international environment” is behind Rishi Sunak’s announcement that UK defence spending will increase to 2.5 per cent of GDP, says RUSI’s Malcolm Chalmers.

Dmitri Peskov: "US aid is causing more Ukrainian casualties!" Coming from the aggressor’s side, this level of gaslighting is just... beyond everything imaginable … wow.

It is reported that Ukrainians from the 115th and 104th Territorial Defense Brigades are surrounded and are negotiating surrender in Berdychi. According to several Russian sources, the encircled Ukrainian Armed Forces battalion at the junction of Semyonovka and Berdychi is ready to surrender. Negotiations with the commander via cell phone were crowned with success for the latter. There is not a single road suitable for leaving Berdycha. In the south, the Russians cut off communications after the capture of Semenovka; in the north, the Russians cut off communications in Novobarmutovka. There is nowhere to retreat!

2.5% is too little and I hope not too late. A lot can happen over the next 6 years. We need to manufacture more in the UK so any extra spending is recirculated into our economy and not spent elsewhere to their benefit.

European countries-almost ALL of them really need to step up and really pay their way! If Poland commits 5% and Lithuania 4% then Britain has NO reason to whine about 2.5%!! The country that must be shamed into paying its way! Germany is like the 5th largest economy in the world and that they have NEVER even reached 2% is deplorable! The guest questioned the US commitment to NATO. WHY on earth would he say that? The US is the only reason why NATO is st😢together! Maybe he’s worried about trump but I can’t believe trump will be re-elected. He’s even crazier than he was and h😢only has the support of about 20% of the country and the ones who hate him the most are old school republicans. Don’t forget, to get us out of NATO, I’m pretty sure Congress would need to be involved and most of them support NATO, so I think the guest is being an alarmist.

The UK shouldn’t get wrapped up in the this US discussion. They have been great allies to the US and have shouldered their burden to NATO much better than mainland Europe. They also did not abandon the US in the Red Sea. I have not doubt the US would be more than willing to enter into joint production projects with the UK for the US, UK, Israel, Ukraine and others. They just created AUKUS after all.

Homie. They have an army 1/5th the size of what we do when adjusted for population. 2% is a peacetime procurement and training budget. They need to go to 7 to 10% for a decade and increase the size of their armed forces by 500% just to be credible again.

War Is a Racket (1935) - Smedley D. Butler (Major General United States Marines 1881-1940) He received 16 military medals, 5 for valour. Is one of 19 men to receive the Medal of Honour twice. Known as "The Fighting Quaker", was the most decorated Marine in US history; he was the only person to be awarded a Marine Corps Brevet Medal and a Medal of Honour for two separate military actions.
