The USA has long been against building an independent European defense capacity within the NATO organization. Madeleine Albright strongly warned against building an independent European defense within NATO. The Trump administration opposed the establishment of the European PESCO project with the same arguments. The US often forgets that Europe is also a defense of the American people. The only time solidarity was tested was when you asked for European help - and got it. But the US left Afghanistan without regard for its allies. My country has relatively lost more soldiers than the United States - and this was thanks for the help. What more and more Europeans have come to realize is that we cannot trust the Americans. Buy European weapons and build an independent European defense organization. We have a population, economy and capacity to match the US. A United States against China without European support is hardly a desirable scenario for the American people - MEGA (Make Europe Great Again)

As yu see in some answers here there is already a readiness of going it alone. Trump probably destroyed the US hegemony by babbling. When the Europeans and the Asians see that US promises are thin air there will be a Nato without us and a Asian Nato without us. Not being the top dog dollar will not be THE currency and us will tank.

Was he so wrong at that time too 😅 1. Europe does not have the resources to build up and it will be very costly for them. 2. Zelensky presidency finishes in a month. If People are against him and want him to go why he should stay 🤔 3. Trump did not say anything about NATO during whole his campaign. All he said was no help for Ukraine. Nobody knows really what is Trump's intention toward NATO 4. He argues Ukraine should continue the war and keep the war for what? What will remain of Ukraine at the end of this war with billions of loans, no infrastructure, no economy, a shortage of workforce, and thousands of people with disabilities and trauma? How does this war benefit Ukraine? It more looks like it benefits those who do not want to accept they made a mistake that caused the devastation of a country. It is all about the West hegemony, not Ukraine 😂 so how did Ukraine plan to win the war? By staying in the war for 10 years even today they can safely mobilize enough manpower.

I totally agree. I would add to that, if I may, the eastern front of NATO, who have borders with Russia and consider themselves lucky to have been accepted as NATO members. They are staunch NATO supporters, all having more than 2% of GDP for defence budget, not surprisingly. 50 years of darkness under the Russian boot, having their countries plundered, made them resolute not to repeat this ghastly piece of history again. Granted, there's Hungary and Slovakia that are duplicitous, just like Turkey. Serbia is not a NATO member. Therefore, out of discussion. In my humble opinion, Europe does not need USA. as a member. But I grew sick in the past two years of seeing almost half of my country of origin's population vocally oppose NATO and construe it as an occupation force. Americans have lost the minds and hearts of many Europeans (at least on my neck of the wood) to Russian propaganda. Left with the choice, I now believe that US must look at the facts and act in self interest. Many Europeans (not all, I am aware) are selling the 2% contribution as an insurance policy? No you need to increase your defense capability, arguably by much more, for the alliance to make sense. Yes , we all lose without NATO but most likely the US loses a bit less, perhaps much less. A poor country where people live in grinding poverty, without the basics of clean water, electricity and sewerage, with a GDP about the size of Italy, has Germany and the USA shivering in fear. NATO is over. For those countries who were committed to mutual defence, the preservation of democracy and human rights there needs to be a new alliance, not dependent on the US and prepared to shun dependence on autocratic regimes. It will take 20 years to build and develop and will need to invest in its defences in every respect from protecting against misinformation, in IT and financial independence from the US and competitor blocs to the development of weapons and energy.

@@marviwilson1853 the US is not leaving NATO....give me a break. If anything, Trump's rhetoric (regardless of how crass) forced Europe to move in the right direction to meet their alliance obligations regarding military spending - I'd call that a win for everyone. The US has a massive forward presence in Europe and I've heard nothing that indicates this is going away. In fact, I had more faith in the national security team under Trump vs. the current administration (i.e. Obama/Biden's inaction during the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014 arguably set the wheels in motion for the 2022 war). I believe the big question that US policymakers in DoD and DoS are wrestling with concerns China (I suppose this is our "backyard" problem to which Europeans would likely agree, much like how many US citizens are starting to look at the Ukraine war). Militarily, the US stepped away from the "Two Major War" strategy in the early 90s - I believe the push to get the European members of NATO to step up is linked with the strategy to enable the US to shift some (not all) focus to the Pacific. Australia, NZ, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, etc. interoperability needs to be bolstered....Despite the fact Russian aggression has turned hot, the US is beginning to feel that China represents the more dominant threat. NATO was there for the US after 9/11. That alliance is not going away, regardless of who occupies the White House. I think Professor Clarke knows that too....
