. Snifff -- mmmm, that new airplane smell. This is the worlds newest 747, just a few weeks old. It's a UPS 747-8f Freighter. The aircraft is immaculate, having just left the factory at Boeing to enter service with UPS. UPS was nice enough to invite me onboard the aircraft for an interview and tour with Erik, a long time Captain for UPS.
First, we go through some of Erik's career and talk about how he got into aviation. Then we move onto what it's like to fly the 747, and what makes this 747 different from the 747-400. As we discuss some of those aspect of flying the plane, we start to touch on the details of the cockpit with a basic overview of how the cockpit controls, systems, and autopilot functions work together.
We go over things such as the PFD, MFD and EICAS which are part of the glass cockpit. These systems have been around for a long time, but they're getting more refined and reliable as time goes on. While the displays and controls may look the same, there's a lot more going on behind the scenes. LED screens, faster computers, and more refined algorithms make this and other Boeing aircraft some of the safest in the world.
Erik also talks about the 747-8fs new electronic checklist, which was introduced with the 777 and 787, and now making it into these upgraded versions of the 747, 737, etc.
He also discussed redundancy of the FMCs (Flight Management Computers) as well as where pilots spend most of their time controlling the aircraft, which the Mode Control Panel (MCP) and Control Display Unit (CDU).
We then take a look at the crew rest area for long haul flights, in addition to the cargo area where we run through some of the unique logistics that UPS must go through to load cargo.
It's truly an amazing machine, and I hope you guys enjoy watching the video!

747 in general is a really good plane for cargo... but its very inefficient when it comes to fuel burn since there are other (2 engine) planes that can fly the same distance but more efficient such as the A330, 350 and the boeing 777, 787 etc
@fab8657

@@Jessy74588 each one of those 2 engines is more powerful than 1 of the 747 tho. Plus the 747 is the best for long-distance cargo transport.
Another 16 Dash 8's on order! Thank you UPS for helping to keep the 747 alive!
Ahh the nice new look of a new aircraft... sooo different then the Q400 I fly.
Great interview! You asked every question that I thought of right after I was thinking of it .
My favorite airliner! I so envy you for this tour. The closeups on the cockpit are pure eyegasm for me. Thanks a lot!
The Boeing 747, greatest aircraft ever made, it's sad that the passenger variation has died, but there will still be a demand for the freighter version because of the design. And what an awesome cockpit, simple and well designed. Long live the Queen of the Sky. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Those fire resistant containers reminded me of UPS 6. Glad that UPS implemented additional safety measures to prevent the same incident from happening again. I hope the other cargo airlines will follow suit.
First 747 made is parked at the museum of flight near seattle, the 747 800 of today is a marvel of technolgical evolution since 1969
Thank you Captain for giving this interview!!!
Great interview! Thank you!
Great to see companies like UPS keeping the Queen of the Skies alive!
Great info vid. Still enjoying Josh's Alaska vids also. Thanks for the fantastic tour you gave him especially the last Denali vid! Incredible!! You could probably make huge bucks just taking peeps on those tourist flights.....
I love going to check these out in the factory and on the flight line. It is a very impressive aircraft. Especially sitting in the cockpit 30 feet off the deck!

Ha! I know. I had stepped out of the cockpit, then asked him to come back for the technical overview. I felt like that made the video.
I was glad to hear about the improved fire-resistant containers. Both UPS and FedEx have lost several aircraft to in-flight fires, several with a loss-of-life. With the increased amount of lithium batteries and hazardous materials being shipped by plane, anything that can withstand or contain fire (containers, fire suppression systems, bulkheads, etc.) is life-saving.
I really enjoyed this video.the 747 is my fave plane.
Glad to see they are still building the 747. In my humble opinion; it is the most beautiful and graceful airplane in the world. Angle of Attack, thank you for the video.

Never going to happen, it's impossible to program a computer for every possible situation, you still need the man in the seat to react to what he sees, hears and feels in real time and when his first input doesn't work try the next thing. The pilot will always be able to react quicker and have a better sense of what is happening and how to correct than a computer.

The army has a lot of drones like this, but I don't think it makes sense for commercial operators. As a pilot, I would rather be in the plane. Unless flying remotely means I can go home every night...
did i see a stall by the A-10 at the end?
Are these CRT displays? I saw a video about upgrading the old 757/767 CRT displays with modern avionics. Is there a plan to roll this type of upgrade to the 747?
Those containers also help contain explosives if they go off, increasing the likelihood of the aircraft flying to an airport instead of crashing
The biggest difference between UPS and FEDEX is, UPS is a trucking company that also has planes. FEDEX is an air shipping company that also uses trucks.
Just built airplane... still looks like it just came outta the 70s, lol...best part about freight travel, its quiet...still got engine noise but u dont have to deal with passenger comfort

What is on the top of pilot windscreen next to pilot's head? Looks like lights?

Music editing was just a tad annoying (had to get that out of the way...sorry!) Nevertheless, a great video. Very informative - very interesting. Thanks for posting it!! Btw, I hit the "like" button.
So can they load freight on the upper deck???? I know the 747-800 passenger version has a HUGE upper deck, much longer than the 747-400. Does the 747-800 freighter have that same extended upper deck??
AofA, thanks for the videos. You should end all of your vids with your signature call-sign...Cleeeeeeaaaarrr That's your trademark!... The way you call out before engine start. I used to call that too when I was flying helicopters but with just normal clear-call. BTW; I fished salmon in Nak Nek, Bristol Bay for two summers in the -90's , love Alaska! Already 2 MEL’s on it😜
747 is the best jumbo ever built..
what airshow is that?
Very interesting. Have been enjoying your series with Josh. I am a non pilot. What controls does the pilot use to steer a big mother like this on the taxiway?
@mrminecraftvlogs6883
4 жыл бұрын
The rudder for minimal movements or tiller for larger movements. They both connect to the nose wheel steering. The pilot/first officer can select to have the main gear help steer for tighter turns.
@ImperrfectStranger
4 жыл бұрын
@@mrminecraftvlogs6883 No selection on the 747-400/-8. It's automatic, based on wheelspeed or ground speed and nose gear angle.

That chevron F/D is a bit unusual. I was always used to seeing as a cross.
@moriver3857
4 жыл бұрын
F/D can be either single-cue, as in the video, or dual-cue, the cross you referred to. Some airplanes allow to switch FD in flight, others you must be on the ground. The dual cue is used more today and has the advantage that it can be split, using only lateral or vertical guidance only, depending on the situation. The single cue is just a carry over from the analog/mechanical flight director days. The dual cue is mostly the default FD on modern avionics. Good day!
I have to wonder how long this size of aircraft will be available to cargo haulers, given that passenger operators seem to be preferring smaller aircraft now. It already appears that the 747 will be the last four engined aircraft in production, and I can't imagine that Boeing could continue to run the production line just to supply a few cargo airlines. Maybe the twins could get this big, but I wouldn't want to bet on it.
How do they see over that dash?
I Freaking LOVE boeing airplanes regardless of the MCAS problem with the big 737. Boeing airplanes feel solid and safe-
