Once sat at a bar with a friend. Mike Sexton was sitting next to the table. My friend got off and went to the car. When he came back, he called me "Mike" from a few yards away. Sexton would rise his hand and wave to him.

Poker wouldn't have reached the heights it did without Mike Sexton. Let's remember that although Moneymaker was certainly the peak of the poker boom, the WPT really got it rolling when it started in 2002, a year before Moneymaker. If the WPT was poorly presented, it would have halted poker in its tracks before it got started, but Sexton was all-class, likeable and had a trustworthy character; introducing millions to the beautiful game of poker. RIP Mike Sexton.

Mike had more of an impact on the game of poker than nearly all others. His clear, concise and educated commentary is what made me interested in the game. I used to listen to him commentating to go to sleep because he had such a soothing voice and knew the game better than most. Can't even say how many times I've almost been to sleep only to hear Mike get excited and start telling the world exactly what would happen before it happened and make me wide-eyed staring at the TV learning from the best. The man is a legend and he will be missed greatly by many. Most of what I've learned I've learned from Mike. There's no doubt he is up there somewhere teaching someone how to play the game he loved. Rest in peace, Mike. I hope we can carry on with the vision you had for the game and make you proud.

I met mike sexton in Montreal a few years back. We went to a bar one night for wpt promo and engaged in a lengthy conversation with him. Everything people said in the tribute was true. He treated me great even though I was a complete stranger. I asked him to tell me Stu Ungar stories. It went like this; he says stuey one day made a bet with billy Baxter (i think) that he could take a random deck of cards and flip over each card at a regular pace and when there was 1 card left he would be able to say which card it was. They bet 10,000 and stuey starts turning the cards over one by one until there’s 1 left. Then he says “it’s the 8 of clubs” and turns over the last card and it was indeed the 8 of clubs. Billy Baxter couldn’t believe it but stuey later told Mike he had a way to figure out what the last card would be (I can’t recall the method used but mike explained it to me). Anyways it was a great night and mike sexton is a Legend

I was 15 in 2003 when I discovered the WPT on Sky TV. The first voice I heard for anything poker related was Mike Sexton. It was his, and Vince Van Patten's voices and viewer friendly commentary that made me fall in love with the game. They don't condescend new players to the game and explained everything in such a way that you felt like you were part pf the action. Mike was simply captivating. I never met him, but you read so many warm stories where he was happy to give his time to talk to people and take photos etc. He was not just an ambassador of the poker world, but to all of human kind. You'll be missed by all Mike.

They should bring this tournament back and name the trophy the Mike Sexton trophy. Every bracelet winner qualifies for that years event. Any person who makes the main final table and the top 10 for the player of the year makes the tournament.

Prayers for the great Mike Sexton!! A TRUE poker ambassador. As for Mike Matusow's last hand, I don't blame him for moving all in there at all. Back in the day that may be looked as as a blowup, but in today's game with his chip stack it is what it is.

Everything that man did was incredible. Just finished this & had a tear in my eye. As a poker player I can only hope to have an illustrious, seasoned career such as him. But more importantly I hope I can inspire people, make people laugh, & do as much as he did for the world he lived & breathed. It's a bit bitter sweet to have the thought that no matter the titles, no matter the glory, no matter the kindness overflowing from that man, he succumbed to such a fate. The world's average of decent humans went down when Mike Sexton passed away. This will not be my only time watching this. P.S. HOW TF IS 2006 14 YEARS AGO ALREADY?! I remember being a young teenager watching this. Now years into a poker "career" I wonder if those were the best days. "I wish there was a way to know you're in the good ol' days before you've actually left them" -Andy Bernard

I'm starting to think that those WERE the best days. A one-two punch of both Black Friday and the pandemic, while several years apart, did a part in solidifying that.
