@@TheDonkeyFLOPPER I think this has been a surprisingly large factor. These guys make themselves very open and watchable, and people get attached to them. So it makes the sport as a whole more popular. A bunch of them are kinda geeky themselves, in an endearing way, especially Martins. Lots of collaboration, and the novelty of seeing these crazy looking dudes pick up unusual things means you have very engaging content compared to, say, powerlifting or Olympic weightlifting training. I know guys like Clarence Kennedy are popular, but he also collaborates with lots of people. I unironically also think Juji and Tom are big influences here despite not being strongmen. They've played a part in bringing these guys to the youtube level they're at now. Brian Shaw has said Tom helped him massively with his channel.

There's no weight category for WSM but modern WSM need to be born at least 6.1 feet and weigh at least 360. Martins is one of the smallest modern strongmen and that's due to him having no weaknesses compared to his competitors (Thor is slow on moving events, Kielszkowski is very bad at static lifts). Older strongman events were not as static strength based so lighter guys could win. As for the comparison I would say WSM is harder to get cause it could simply be impossible if you're short but the olympics are more well known and more prestigious.

I hope Martins wins Santa Monica. Perhaps his biggest rival will be Shaw. I looked up the events and it looks like Martins has an advantage. The log for reps is in Shaw's favor. If he doesn't take too long in between reps, he can crush the competition in this event for sure. Same with the bag over bar. However, I think Martins has an edge with the farmer's walk, the carry medley, and the deadlift. What's more, if Shaw is slow on the medley and farmer's, there might be other competitors edging in between him and Martins, giving Martins more of an edge. The deadlift is a big question for me when it comes to Shaw. I don't see his KZread channel devote time to it, but Martins has given some insight to his deadlift and it's looking pretty good. As there will be other big pullers, Martins can once again extend a possible lead in this event, if Shaw doesn't do well in this event. I don't think Martins is weak in any of the events and he'll be consistently scoring big points, whereas Shaw might be off on the deadlift. Still, the events are heavy and that favors Shaw. If the deadlift for reps doesn't bother his hamstrings, it's going to be close. In any case a very interesting competition, with much at stake, and lots of top competitors -- and people being stoked to doing well and get to the Arnold.

  • @adrianpap1374

I agree with you on everything except the log part. Shaw barely did three (actually two) reps with 180 kg at WUS. Martins will be good for at least 5-6 reps with 170 kg. Not so sure about Brian. Not to mention, Martins sets up way quicker in between reps compared to Brian. But yeah, that aside your analysis is spot on.

How would getting less volume or missing a lift because you aren’t recovered be better for strength? Keep up the good work man! 💪

Also no offense to Eddie Hall, etc. but I believe that without the extreme unfair advantage of sports doping, he would never come close to e.g Martins or Brian Shaw naturally, even if Brian is sports doping, however I believe he is not, he is way stronger than Eddie and others without sports drugs. It is sad to see how Strongman is no longer a drug free sport. Mariusz Pudzianowski most probably was on sports drugs, but he would still have been naturally a very strong human being without them! He was a legend however, so I am not too effected by that one. Geoff Capes is also a man that I aspire to be like, as he was just an immensely strong and huge man, who was also very quick, and was a great sportsman, e.g Shot put.
