It's a magnetic rudder. It works by swopping the polarity of the magnet in the tail. That either attracts or repels the magnet in the rudder, causing the it to go left or right.

He was flying in circles due to the fact that if he flew straight at any point he would not have enough space to turn, I know this because i regularly fly model planes indoors. The first RC plane I ever flew had no control surfaces what so ever and just used to small motors which changed speeds so that you could turn and gain altitude. :)

Actually, you can have full control of a radio control plane using only the rudder and engine. The faster the engine turns the propeller, the more lift you gain and the higher the plane will fly. Using the rudder also banks the plane slightly, because the aircraft is so light, the rudder is enough to turn the plane. If the plane was larger and carried momentum then ailerons would be needed as the rudder would merely change the direction the plane is facing and not change the direction of flight.

Someone mentioned that they should have invented wireless electricity and then the tiny plane could have flown forever. Actually if Tesla were around he probably would have enjoyed assisting putting together a wirelessly powered plane. All you need do back then was tell him it was impossible, stand back, and watch him work furiously at making something possible. This is a really neat little plane. Quite amazing miniature engineering.

Might want to try building one on a 3D printer. I understand that those can print moving parts like the control surfaces together as a unit: the axel pin parts can be made into their corresponding holes so that there is nothing to assemble, and they cannot come apart, unless they break. Thus these parts can be made lighter and tighter.

I fly all kinds of R/C aircraft. You should be required to do a simple figure 8 to demonstrate the aircraft's ability to change direction. If it can only go left, then it is not completely controllable or he is a bad pilot, or both. I have a commercially available "Ember 2" that I could do all kinds of aerobatics in the space he was flying in. I also have a "Night Vapor" that flies half the speed of his micro plane. Yes, they are bigger, but adding wing area would have helped him.

@buddingvideos Yes - the original un-edited video shows figure 8's and right turns, but I kept them to a minimum as the high right turn speed meant that the cameraman was struggling to keep it in frame. But apart from all that, it's a right little sod in right turns! I've now made a much better design with 2 contra rotating torque cancelling motors which I'm trying to put into production.

The wing is set at a high angle of attack whilst the motor/prop is pointed downwards. In flight, the motor naturally assumes a horizontal attitude making the wing's angle of attack even higher. Also, the airflow from the prop is directed at the severely under-cambered wing and is deflected downwards - not exactly a "blown" wing but it does increase lift. It glides at a much flatter angle with the motor off so maybe power stall is about right. All this was to make it manageable and more importantly, slow it down - high speed at this size, try and follow it - especially with a video camera.

I have seen those in a radio controlled set up. which is quite amazing for their extremely slow speed but of course they must be much larger than you are playing to create a lift. they have inspired the gossamer Condor human powered flight. which was just a large microfilm playing

by varying the current through the electromagnet you can vary the force produced, if the control surfaces are sprung loaded a small force will only cause a small deflection and a larger force a larger deflection. Voltage wont make so much difference although usually by altering the voltage you will alter the current aswell so that might well work. Whether or not that is being done I do not know, but its possible.
