World's LARGEST Train Facility - Altoona Works (Juniata Locomotive Shop) - Norfolk Southern

Ойын-сауық

In this video we check out one of the LARGEST Train Facilities in the World. This mega location sits on hundreds of acres and was once responsible for the production of thoughts of Locomotives and rolling stock. Today it's owned by Norfolk Southern and the massive facility does testing, rebuilds and maintenance on their fleet of Locomotives. With the chance of luck, I managed to catch a heritage unit being turned around on the turn table. So come along with me as we check out more of what Altoona Pennsylvania has to offer. Enjoy

What railfan WOULDN'T want to live there ??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But here's a good thought...... see if the folks would sell, give them a good price, and make that and maybe the next house a Bed-and-Breakfast. I could see this becoming just as popular, if not more so, as The Station Inn. Make sure to build an upstairs deck, going all the way around. One good thing about Norfolk Southern, is that their heritage units, are THE ENTIRE UNIT....... not some tiny little sticker, as CSX does. Oops.... forgot my manners --EXCELLENT video !!!! I'm jealous. Just thinking..... of how they use to say at the end of the football game, is so-and-so going to Disney World ?? My answer --- HELL NO !!!! I'm goin' to Altoona !!!!

If someone handed me the keys to that house and said, "You have two hours to move in and it's free, otherwise the next guy gets it", I would be done in 40 minutes despite living 4 hours away, and there's nothing anyone could do to stop me. Except my wife. I'd need her permission first.

You don't know how fortunate you are to catch a "Heritage Unit" the turntable. NS has a number of locomotives painted in "fallen flag" schemes. Railfans track the locations of those units.

Wisconsin used to have on in Altoona but not anymore because the company of the Union Pacific took it down and it was made for the North Western trains and the turn table was made for SOO line steam train well it’s gone now after it was token down by the Union Pacific

If you filmed this right before you posted, we didn't have 1000 employees. Around 600 then. Less than 500 now. Thanks to NS greed. We are capable of far more than what they're using us for. The test shed you referred to is simply testing it like that all the electronics and air brake equipment works right. Then of course load on rebuilds. The overhaul line, track most south, also tests before release though not as in depth because its mostly the engine parts they have to worry about. Theres an emissions lab on the opposite end of the shops in use which tests exactly what its called.

As the switcher (EMD SW1200?) shoved he road unit onto the turntable, I wondered, because of the length of it, if it was a balanced turntable and it would be centered and the SW would back away or if it was a twin span table. Then the switcher stayed on behind it and my question was answered: twin span. (In steam days, since the engine was so much heavier than the tender, even when coaled and watered, the loco's center of balance, somewhere near the back of the engine had to be over the center, leaving a space in front of the pilot. When the loco's weight was centered, the entry end bogies would lift off the pit rail and the weight would be taken with the center bearing. As longer and longer locos were developed, tables had to increase in length, turntables rebuilt or relocated, taking up already precious real estate. The twin span table, developed by Bethlehem Steel in the 1920s, spread the weight over both end bogies and the center bearing, so center of balance didn't matter. I'll bet there were times when hostlers spotted short locos just clear of the ends of the table's rails to turn it, which would've been an odd thing to see! Altoona was an incredible facility in the early days, when the Pennsy built a lot of their own locomotives and a large percentage of their rolling stock. It's not too shabby in modern times, either! Stay safe, everybody.

I don't know exactly what you're talking about but that table has a motor on each end to drive it around. We only usually place a unit on the middle when spinning it for cab orientation going into the shop or for transportation.

Our antique rail system here in the US is in stagnation at best. Corporate heads like to brag about their freight rail system. That takes a lot of intestinal fortitude to have that as your great accomplishment. These corporate heads have done their very best to discourage interest in passenger rail service. Giving Freight priority on the tracks and eliminating stops for passenger service, apparently is part of their plan. I have seen many right-a-ways that serviced towns, abandoned and the tracks removed. They have increased the ticket prices, eliminated many stops, and gave poor service in general. If you want to see a real rail system look at the European system on KZread, especially Dutch Railways. Don't only look at their modern Passenger and Freight cars, look at the road beds, signals, Passenger terminals and safety equipment. I'm old enough to remember when we had a real rail system for it's time here in the US.
