florida has been very good for katie. she looks much stronger already in this season than she had in the past and that final 25m was very reminiscent of bobby finke. it was a very good move for her. she’s going to be a very good force to be reckoned with.

Katie doing a tough swim leading the swimmers, she is her own pace-maker and a swimmer with great style 🙂 well done

Waited a while to see her in SC 800 and 1500. Finally! Records always going to be hers.

SCM and LCM are two different beasts. Ledecky is better at LCM. But she is so ahead of the curve a WR is always a possibility.

I think her turns and underwaters have improved compared to when she was younger, so though I agree she clearly prioritises the LCM, she can do the short course, with its lots of turns, well.

@@ASD128London well nearly all major events are LCM, where between the flags is 80% of the distance instead of 60% of the distance as it is for SCM. When you’ve got fewer than half as many turns, it makes sense to prioritize between the flags instead of inside the flags.

It's a new code fina have made. It's an identification for swimmers who've been entered into the competition by their club.

So, Mireia Belmonte only held the WR since 2013 because Katie never swam the short course 800 meters???

Short course saves Katie over 1 second per 100m in this race as compared to a 50m long course pool. This 7:57 SCM time is probably roughly equivalent to an 8:08 in LCM. Her LCM world record is 8:04 from the 2016 Olympics.

@@joshprice333 LCM is the far more frequently-swam event, especially in the US where the short course distance is 25 yards, not 25m. Plus, Olympics are LCM only. Thus, LCM records tend to be considered more prestigious. But both have merit.

Swimming needs a race that is equivalent to the hurdles in track & field. Like, maybe some floaty foam barriers in the pool that the swimmers have to pull themselves up and over and then keep swimming. It would also be cool to see them swimming in a big oval pool like a track, so there are no flips, just going full bore the whole way. Also, perhaps a true aquatic equivalent to polo where the players ride trained dolphins and hit the ball with a big foam hammer, instead of just swimming around and throwing it. The IOC really needs to consult me on their event lineup.

She might not. It definitely isn't a given as much as you want it to be. Still a pretty big gap in this distance (long and short course). Ledecky peaked while she was a teenager. It is quite possible the same will happen for McIntosh. The odds of her bettering Ledecky's times in shorter distances are much better (as Titmus has already done). It remains to be seen how much time McIntosh even devotes to the 800 if she is doing the IMs in addition to the 200/400 freestyle and 200 butterfly plus relays in competition.
